I thought we were supposed to be in for a big shock yesterday according to Reform posters on here?

If it wasnt a big shock for you, why have you got your knickers twisted? Dont you have a better things to do than comment on Reforms fifth seat?

P.S 4 mln people voted for them but obviously nothing to see here..

IllMetByMoonlight · 05/07/2024 18:56

Why expect to be entertained by politicians, or to require our elected representatives to boast dazzling personalities?
When I hear someone say "I quite like X party, but Z MP is so boring / lacklustre / dull!" I confess that I judge the f u c k out of that person.

Well that is silly because the prime minster has to be on the world stage negotiating , persuading etc how good a job will they do if people fall asleep or switch off with boredom . Leaders need to charismatic, engaging , popular , interesting , it's not just about home policy , the more enthusiastic and committed you come across you take people with you not send them to sleep and avoid you .

@NotHooray I can't wrap my head around people voting for something they know is bad because someone called them "thick" - if that is all it took then perhaps there's no talking to them .

RichPetunia · 05/07/2024 19:08

I scrutinised the manifestos of the people standing in my constituency. The only one to mention safe places for females was reform. And on that single issue, I voted for them.

hattie43 · 05/07/2024 19:08

@IClaudine

If Reform keep this momentum going and Labour fails I can see a very different 2029 on the horizon .

I wonder if there are many of you.

GC myself but that was a step too far for me. Luckily we had a good independent candidate I could give my vote too.

On which subject, Lammy is going to have to edit himself considerably as Foreign Secretary. He's usually so outspoken.

Keep thinking that and keep insulting Reform voters. You are in for a big surprise come 2029.

There were lots of people who thought we were in for a big surprise yesterday. Were you one of them?

LiterallyOnFire · 05/07/2024 19:10

Oh dang it. Where's the vaunted edit function?

nomoretoriesforme · 05/07/2024 19:11

I explained up thread why I have got my "knickers twisted".

Reform UK PLC now has 5 years to be scrutinised. I don't think it or its owners will survive that. By 2029 it may be a busted flush. But until then we have Farage with a bigger platform from which to air his abhorrent views.

Insulting people never changes their mind

Absolutely right. It just entrenches people.

Completely agree with this. It has been happening since Labour's open door immigration policy under Tony Blair. British tradesmen struggled to compete with the influx of foreign workers. No one listened to their concerns and just branded them racists and bigots. Our tradesmen protesting and Gordon Brown promising British jobs for British workers which didn't happen.

So people spoke at the ballot box and voted in the Conservatives who promised to take back control of our borders. But they didn't and now Labour are promising to stop the boat crossings.

On this thread people are still throwing insults at others. Immigration in this country is very much a concern. If the Labour Government ignore it, more and more people will vote Reform because they will think Nigel Farage is the only one listening to them.

But they obviously dont think it's bad, do they? As someone elsewhere on MN said, the majority are disenfranchised voters hoping for better and not trusting another party to deliver, due to experience, and so voting for the new kid on the block. To insult and mud-sling will entrench their opinion.

What's so awful about Reform?

Don't jump on me, I actually voted Green (a Labour MP took the seat, but happy with that) but I looked at all of the manifestos, I was surprised with how many good points Reform had, on the face of it.

I can see why they appealed.

Green and Reform are at opposite ends of the political spectrum. Reform want:

  1. Death penalty returned
  2. Out of the ECHR (mechanism to hold govt to account on human rights violations)
  3. Out of Equality Act (mechanism to hold govt, public authorities, employers etc to account over sex/race/sexual orientation etc discrimination
  4. Women to stay at home with children and not go to work
  5. Privatisation of the NHS
  6. Abandon climate targets and climate charge policies.

Just for starters.

Cantaloupes · 05/07/2024 19:17

@2dogsandabudgie 👏🏼 👏🏼 Well said.

nomoretoriesforme · 05/07/2024 19:19

Are you saying that you are not surprised that 4mln people voted for Reform? is Is this what you expected?

EasternStandard · 05/07/2024 19:21

I guess we’ll see how it goes with Labour in power and 4m Reform voters

kikisparks · 05/07/2024 19:22

On reflection I actually think it’s quite important we don’t call reform voters all racists or imbeciles or whatever. Having been on the receiving end of insults for voting for the party that I did, it turned me off completely to any debate. Also I don’t actually think all reform voters are racist or stupid (the Reform UK company and candidates on the other hand…)

If we want people to understand what Reform really stand for and to listen and for us to understand their reasoning and what appealed about Reform then we cannot be mud slinging.

Nigel Farage supports many of the views of Andrew Tate that’s enough for me to know what they’re like

Not what I meant - anyone can vote for them for whatever reasons they want, but to dig their heals in because of insults seems like a immature reason to me.

And I mean that for any party , not just reform.

It's the same in the US, voting for trump just to "show the libs" seems irrational to me.

She can't control what others post.

She can remind them that she asked not to insult here. However, if this is what they want - they are free to set up their own personal insulting thread and gloat together.
