👏👏 good. They will be a check to Labour.

@hattie43 - well I don't think Starmer is dull. I'm quite excited by someone who has such integrity, determination and ability. I don't need to be entertained by buffoons like Boris or Nigel to be interested in politics. Sadly too many people value the entertainment factor over ability.

Spot on.

The amount of people that would vote solely on looks or someone that acts the entertaining fool is scary. I wonder if that's how they judge people in RL - tbh that would explain reality TV at least.'

Shallow AF.

First past the post is abhorrent, there are no good reasons to keep it

I don't agree.

I don't necessarily support FPTP but there are democratic arguments in favor of it. It usually results in the most popular party forming the government. PR systems, on the other hand, more often result in coalition governments, following backroom negotiations between the parties. So while PR results in more representative parliaments (or equivalent), they often produce a government that nobody voted for.

In one of the few times FPTP returned a coalition government in the UK, it notably resulted in Lib Dem voters feeling absolutely betrayed, but that's the nature of coalitions.

It's awkward to say but I do think Reform voters tend to be a bit thick, or at least don't think the policies through - more of a visceral reaction.

Why would they care about the policies? Reform are never going to win power. It's a big "fuck you - we are not happy" message.

And this about the fourth time now. Brexit. Blue wall. Etc etc.

We need to start engaging with the complaints and concerns of economically depressed towns instead of calling them names.

Meanwhile, there's the entertainment of watching Farage & Co face scrutiny.

Motomum23 · 05/07/2024 18:41

I've seen countless people of all colours and ethnic backgrounds voting reform - are you saying those black and Asian people are racist too??

Yes of course black or Asian people can be racist. Were you asleep whilst Braverman was Home Secretary?

But I don't think many POC vote Reform UK PLC. If you look at the audience for Farage's events in the run up to the GE, you will notice something.

I'm not sure it shows how popular Reform is, rather how unpopular the Tories are

Yes that's what I think.

It's like we're stuck in this big repeating cycle of protest voting.

I’ve had ‘fuck off Paki go back to your own country’ shouted at me one too many times in my life to think that people who are mates with out & out racists could possible be ok

keir starmer was happy to support Jeremy Corbin and his antisemitic buddies and many of them are still MPs. I don’t think any party would survive guilt by association with racists.

I don’t support Reform but I’m fed up of people demonizing people they don’t agree with. I think there is a serious issue here that people don’t feel the mainstream parties represent them.

Absolutely right. It just entrenches people.

hadenoughpassthewine · 05/07/2024 18:52

It’s my bloody constituency as well, absolutely mortified. I’m genuinely concerned that according to figures Reform got 14% of the vote!

I've just read the thread and this is my main takeaway. I didn't vote reform, I wouldn't vote reform but seriously..insult people and get their backs up and they'll go from strength to strength. It's not rocket science!!

So you think that the HUGE increase in immigration is not causing any issues at all in the country?

You have swallowed their trip, lock, stock and barrel, haven't you. Mos of the immigration is legal, and to fill jobs Brits are unwilling or unable to do.

I remember arriving in a ski resort in the USA- the Mayor and pals had had a massive clean out of much of the migrant workers, some who were illegal, but most who were legit. They were so pleased and proud of themselves! Then ski season started and they realised they had no-one to work in Hôtels, laundery, restaurants and catering, bars, ski lift and snow clearance, patrols, etc. The resort had to close and they lost tons of money and investment. And they didn't have to have staff for care homes, care in the Community, hospitals, etc. The country would fall apart if we sent legal migrants back- and there will be massive shortages if they are not allowed to bring their families with them. Would you move to do a job, and particularly a difficult, perhaps unpleasant one, long hours, low pay AND have to leave your children and spouse behind? Bet you would not. Why should they?

It is the infrastructure that has not been adjusted. Huge new estates with no schools or surgeries, or transport, etc, all over the place. And massive under-investment added to huge cut-backs.

LuluBlakey1 · 05/07/2024 18:54

Fidgety31 · 05/07/2024 18:13

Yep and they have only been around a few weeks with Farage at the helm - just shows how many people do like them despite all the negative press .

People are voting for them because they appeal to their base responses to everything- which is to blame immigrants for all the woes in our society and the world- housing shortage, NHS collapsing, GP issues, school places, difficulties seeing an NHS dentist, waiting lists, cost of benefits, not being able to get jobs.
They lie blatantly- their claim that they would raise Personal Allowance levels and this would mainly benefit the lowest earners is rubbish- the people who would gain most are the highest earners because the second bit of the plan is they would raise the point at which higher tax rates would be kick in to £70,000. Higher earners would benefit hugely because they'd get both benefits.

Most people don't understand, because they haven't bothered to, that Reform have neither the capacity, the infrastructure or properly costed plans to achieve anything they say they would. Under scrutiny, their manifesto promises were shown to be unachievable.

Like the Tories, they exist to benefit the wealthy more than anyone but they need and are targeting the votes of the young and lowest paid- promising lower taxes, fewer immigrants so there are more houses, more jobs available. It;s all rubbish but people have fallen for it- the same disenfranchised people who voted for Brexit in their hordes and those who are just racists - whether they realise it or not.

Exactly Labour got majority, you dont have to worry about measly 5 seats Reform got. Why you are even bothering to comment here? There is nothing to worry about...

Why expect to be entertained by politicians, or to require our elected representatives to boast dazzling personalities?
When I hear someone say "I quite like X party, but Z MP is so boring / lacklustre / dull!" I confess that I judge the f u c k out of that person.

There is nothing to worry about in the Parliamentary sense. Reform UK PLC will have no influence within Parliament.

But I worry about the fact that 4 million people hold views which disgust me and make my fellow citizens afraid. Farage himself frightens me. He is really dangerous.
