What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

This. I am disgusted by the behaviour of whoever was shouting at her and I couldn't make out what they were shouting. BUT, maybe this might be a tiny light bulb moment and might lead to a little bit of insight and understanding of the violence and abuse that women are subjected to constantly, just for asking for single sex spaces and services where necessary and appropriate.

Don’t you realise that Jess Philips, of all people, is very very aware about of MVAWG and has done more to highlight it than any other mp. Yes, there is much to disagree with her on, but she is NOT the enemy of women’s safe spaces. I’m stunned you have assumed to give her lectures on MVAWG or victim blame her with a “but” (there’s always a but at the start of a victim blame)

Yes she tows the labour line on trans - but she is not the perpetrator or cause of trans right demanding access to women’s spaces. She compromises like many MPs need to to fit their own ideals to a policitcsl party home. If all MPs insisted on joint parties with which they could only agree 100% with everything they said, we’d have 500 plus political parties. or 3 with no policies other than do nothing. Life is about compromises, and Jess, with all her faults imho, cannot be faulted for the positive and persistent stance she has taken on many women’s causes to our benefit.

she is also not a supporter of labour parties stance on gaza- she got a child out for medical help which is more than most mp. She lost her position on front bench by her stance fgs.

she was being abused and she was clearly frightened, angry. She’s clearly had to absorb the stress and fear of other women who were working with her as they too were targeted. David challen, who has much to thank Jess for and vice versa, is right to highlight it. It was a shameful spectacle of bullying, trying to shut a women up

all those saying she was upset for nearly loosing a seat. She didn’t . She won. Same as Wes streaming- they weren’t shouting threats and abusing him during his campaign were they? No one is calling it out the predominantly Muslim men putting the uppity women in her place…if we don’t stand up to that as pure misogyny hate crime (which funnily enough labour will look at ) and use “ah but” victim blaming, you are excusing this behaviour

The irony of this whole thing is WTF is there a 'Friends of Israel' sideline anyway?
US politicians are compromised by AIPAC, UK politicians have to lick Israel's genocidal ar**. Why?
US citizens fully funding Israeli healthcare and education meanwhile having crap healthcare themselves. No sorry this bs needs to end.

I don't believe it for a second. Weapons of mass destruction lie got us to go to war in Iraq. This is a perfect story for the Daily Mail so very likely concocted.
How dare anyone oppose Jess Phillip's siding with genocidal Israel is the undertone.

Don't believe what?

As someone has already pointed out, Jess Phillips actually stood down from Labour’s shadow cabinet so she could vote for a ceasefire, against the party whip. But why let facts get in the way.

The way she and her volunteers have been treated is pure misogyny. Have you seen male volunteers being harassed? Men being jeered while they give speeches?

Jody McIntyre should be banned from standing for public office. He conducted himself in a way that is totally inappropriate for anyone seeking to be part of our system of government. If you show such disrespect for fellow candidates you don’t deserve to be part of the process.

Jess did that to save her seat which only just worked. There's no pandering to these zealots.

dotdotdotdash · 05/07/2024 16:42

You are spreading misinformation. It took me 30 seconds to determine that Jess Phillips actually stood down from the shadow cabinet in protest at the result on the vote over whether to call for a ceasefire. She was one of 56 Labour MPs who voted for a ceasefire:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-67439941

But don't let the truth get in the way of your diatribe. And your bleeding heart does nothing for the people of Gaza.

Bloody hell. I’d missed this drama so took that poster at their word.

I’m sorry but this is not the vicitmhood olympics.

She and her team have been abused and intimidated. At a meeting held by Shabana Mahmood (Labour MP in neighbouring constituency), the meeting was interrupted by masked men. People’s tired have been slashed. They are filmed and followed.

She has stood there on TV, in front of a crowd, while these men continue to heckle and abuse her.

And she didn’t cower. She said exactly what she thought.

Yea she’s very bloody brave!

This is the UK general election, not a bloody referendum on the beliefs of the residents of Birmingham on the Palestinian-Israeli situation.

Edited

This masked men abusing women is becoming a regular occurrence, happened last weekend in Brighton as well.

cardibach · 05/07/2024 16:48

Kolbie · 05/07/2024 16:13

She voted 'No' to a ceasefire so think I'll save my 'brave' comments to the women and children of Gaza having their limbs blown apart in a genocide. 'Brave' would be appropriately used for the children and people of Gaza having operations including c-sections without anaesthesia.
You can pick and choose when to support women but it comes across as racist and the people of Gaza are a million miles braver than an MP who didn't have it in her to call for a ceasefire. What kind of a human being doesn't call for a ceasefire?

I think she is a disgrace and cares not a jot for the females of Gaza. Weaponsing 'womanhood' is hypocritical when she said no to a ceasefire which would have saved a lot of female lives in Gaza not to mention lessened the physical and psychological horror they are experiencing.

There is 500 billion worth of gas off the coast of Gaza. Is that of more interest to her?!

Ummm…she gave up a shadow cabinet position and defied the whip to vote in favour actually.

SerafinasGoose · 05/07/2024 16:44

A totally false equivalence.

Did he have his tyres slashed? Receive death threats directed toward him or his family?

What you report is that he lost his seat via due democratic process. UK elections do not run on the basis of mob rule.

Edited

If Jess was targeted due to being female (this would suggests she is) then Labour should have done more to stick up for her and not allow mob rule.

Is there an image of the men who were chanting? If they were an organised group, what was the group? Absolutely disgraceful behaviour and the men need to be named and shamed.

There you go.

Israel are our allies is what it comes down to. They also throw a lot of money at our MPs which does compromise them.

Why is Angela Rayner 'awful'?

She just is. She nearly made me not vote Labour.

Boomer55 · 05/07/2024 16:52

This isn’t a man vs women thing - this was about Gaza. I don’t know why anyone thought we needed it in a British GE, but there you go. 🙄

This masked men abusing women is becoming a regular occurrence, happened last weekend in Brighton as well.

It needs to be stamped out immediately by the police, and arrests made. This is not okay.

Kolbie · 05/07/2024 16:55

Hummingbird75 · 05/07/2024 16:39

Don't be ridiculous. Hamas knew precisely what they were doing when they raped and murdered innocent babies and civilians in Israel and took so many people hostage. This was all planned. Nothing accidental about what they did. Knowing they would cause a retaliation. Which was guaranteed.

Of course Israel is going to defend itself, as any country would.

You are giving such a one sided version of events it is almost laughable, if it were not so deadly serious. This will not help bring peace, I can tell you that for nothing.

It is not okay to bring this issue to the streets of England with such violent abuse. Jess Phillips has no power to change the mind of the Israeli government even if she wanted to, it is not for her to wade into such a complex situation. She is there to work for the people in her area.

You are being entirely unreasonable.

It is not acceptable to treat others like this - in this country - we are a civilised and tolerant nation, and will not stand for this behaviour.

I want the laws changed urgently to protect MPs from this disgusting animalistic behaviour, with very long prison sentences. We are not going to carry on like this whether you like it or not.

Everyone feels impassioned about different issues globally but we do not harm others, and inflict our anger on others at will. That is called abuse, not protest.

Sorry but don't use 'we' as there is nothing civilised in backing the terrorist genocidal state of Israel and Israel has been actively terrorising since 1948. Israel is an occupying force.
Civilised people call for a ceasefire. Now. Genocide supporters are not civilised.
'We' as a nation call for a ceasefire as 'we' are civilised. The stats back this.
Don't discuss the killing of over 50,000 people by Israel, 70% of whom are children and women in trivial terms either. We all know this is a genocide. We all know the Israeli army are terrorists. The elephant in the room can no longer be ignored.
Disgusting.
Listen to the testimonials of Israeli army soldiers who have defected, a movement known as 'breaking the silence' to fully understand the terrorism purpotrated by the Israeli army in Gaza and the West Bank for decades.

User135644 · 05/07/2024 16:55

There was always going to be an election in 2024. If Jess didn't resign she presumably loses her seat - she still nearly lost it.

Even Wes Streeting only just scraped his over the same issue and he's the new Health Sec. Ashworth lost his seat as well. All broadly popular with their constituents but the Gaza thing massively interfered.

Angela Rayner is fabulous. So is Jess Phillips.
Stop setting successful women against each other.

How is Angela fabulous?

Prawncow · 05/07/2024 16:58

Sunak had until January 2025 to call an election. Most people were looking at the late autumn.
