What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

Yes, she is a remarkable woman and I have so much respect for her.

listsandbudgets · 05/07/2024 15:36

No that is not the reason.

The reason she sounded so shocked is because her share of the vote went down by 26.9% and she only won by 693 votes. Last time her majority was about 10600.

She nearly lost the election. Her colleague Khalid Mahmood in Perry Barr lost his seat to an independent. Prior to that he had a majority of over 15000.

Certainly the heckling and dirty politics were completely unacceptable and she had every right to be upset by them. However, she came uncomfortably close to losing her seat and regardless of anything else being hit in the ballot box like that must have been a huge shock.

Doubt any Labour big hitters will want to stand in Birmingham again.

Ramblingnamechanger · 05/07/2024 15:39

perhaps she will now acknowledge the amount of abuse that women have been getting from men in her own party. And that they have actively been expelling women from the party. It is disgusting that women are not allowed to speak about our concerns.

SidewaysOtter · 05/07/2024 15:41

That is horrendous. Who are these misogynist arseholes?

mrshoho · 05/07/2024 15:42

I hope this election goes some way to proving that in many areas every single vote matters. I hope in future elections more people are prepared to vote. In so many areas the margins were so tight.

ForKeenLimeOtter · 05/07/2024 15:43

YANBU!! But I accidently selected the wrong option and ruined the 100% poll. I don't think there's a way to change it. Sorry!!

mommybear1 · 05/07/2024 15:47

I'm not in her constituency but I have a friend who is and says she's an outstanding MP for the people she represents. Given the intimidation she has faced and will no doubt still have to contend with I admire her. To the pp who said she sounded shell shocked due to losing so many votes I disagree - Labour know they face a threat from "independents" the barrage of abuse thrown at female MPs and particularly Labour candidates who won't support "independent" viewpoints has been shameful. I fear for the future of democracy following this election.

This. I am disgusted by the behaviour of whoever was shouting at her and I couldn't make out what they were shouting. BUT, maybe this might be a tiny light bulb moment and might lead to a little bit of insight and understanding of the violence and abuse that women are subjected to constantly, just for asking for single sex spaces and services where necessary and appropriate.

You can just click on the other option and it will change your vote 🙂

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 05/07/2024 15:51

I'm appalled at what she's being subjected to.

However we have a problem in this country and she hasn't addressed it.

MauveCrow · 05/07/2024 15:22

I have zero sympathy. This is direct consequence of policies she and her party support.

The more that politicians of all stripes have to come face to face with the fallout of their decisions the better for us a nation.

One thing clear from this election is that certain radical Islamic groups feel they no longer need the apparatus of the labour party to get into parliament, as Jonathon Ashworth found out.

THIS IS THE PROBLEM

You have NO SYMPATHY for a woman being yelled at and intimidated. A woman who has not agreed with her party line , and you know what- lack of sympathy/ empathy is what has emboldened these men to do this. You are the same problem

Yellow2024 · 05/07/2024 15:53

I agree. So much respect for Jess.

Totally disgusting behaviour towards her.

Not a Labour supporter, but I'd much rather she was parachuted in as a replacement for the awful Angela Rayner.

Angela Rayner is fabulous. So is Jess Phillips.
Stop setting successful women against each other.

"independents"

One way of saying it I guess.

crochetmonkey74 · 05/07/2024 15:56

People should not expect aggression and intimidation as a result of doing their job. There is NO excuse for this- whether you agree with Labour's policies or not.

AllesAusLiebe · 05/07/2024 15:14

I'd be okay with a spider plant being parachuted in to replace Rayner.

crochetmonkey74 · 05/07/2024 15:57

I liked what Harriet Harman was suggesting that a cross party women's group gathers and tackles big issues

Drfosters · 05/07/2024 15:57

I honestly am very confused though about who stands for what? I thought many labour MP’s had come out in support of Palestine? Some even said they would have it recognised as a state. Why were they heckling her? Am I the only one who has no idea what labour’s views are on women and the Middle East? Genuinely I have heard different things from different MPs. I can’t work out why she was heckled other than being a women and she beat them.

No, I'm not the problem. The problem is expecting people of totally different culture to follow our norms, and when they don't, not calling it out for what it is, instead dancing around the issue as one of general misogyny. It's not just disingenuous, it's a dangerous lie.

NOPE

you having no sympathy towards a human being intimidated on live television for simply doing her her job is definitely a massive problem

Calm and clear diplomacy is what we should be aiming for

Aah here we go...true colours about to be shown.
You might as well just spit it out.

They were heckling her for exactly the same reason that Raynor had to sit cowed in a room full of men while begging for them to tell their community to vote for her.

It seems the "independents" have their own ideas if how politics should be conducted and what part women should play it in it.

One way or another Labour will have to confront this.

Spit what out, that I think the islamisation of politics in certain constituencies is a bad thing?

One would hope everyone agreed with that.
