What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

Israel are our allies is what it comes down to. They also throw a lot of money at our MPs which does compromise them.

Yep it does compromise them but if they are our 'allies' and they are actively genocidal, we need better allies.
When you know better, you do better

In case anyone still hasn’t go it

She's also a member of Labour Friends of Israel in a heavily Muslim constituency.

Jody Mcintyre who stood against her was a one issue campaigner over Palestine.

It's the only reason she nearly lost her seat (the Israel-Palestine conflict)

HelloJillll · 05/07/2024 17:00

Jess did vote for an immediate ceasefire and quit her shadow cabinet role over it.

There is ZERO excuse or reasoning for the behaviour of those men.

All of the women, regardless of party, are incredibly brave to face the threats and danger.

Cornettoninja · 05/07/2024 17:02

I’m really glad previous posters have corrected the record on Jess Phillips and the stance she took for a ceasefire. She’s also worked relentlessly in parliament to address sexual crimes committed by MP’s.

shes not to everyone’s taste but given the amount of complete horseshit on this thread alone I think I’m safe in saying if you’re looking for a reason to prop up your dislike of her this isn’t the thread to find it.

or do, but you’ll look like a complete wanker if you repeat any of it and expect to be taken seriously.

DinosaurFarmer · 05/07/2024 17:02

I do live and work in her constituency and I could honestly tell you what it's like living in an area like this where anything but certain religious viewpoints are increasingly marginalised and dismissed. But then I'd just be dismissed as a racist wouldn't I by people who don't live here or in areas like this and have no experience of the truth of the matter. Clearly my 'lived experience' doesn't matter!

Jess Phillips is a good MP and advocate for women and girls but I thought twice about voting for her this time not because of her but because of Labour's stance on trans and women's issues.

What is worrying for me is that the second place candidate came so close to her purely on a ticket of Palestine - nothing else, no interest in local people or issues, just those of people thousands of miles away, solely because they share the same religion! And terrifyingly 10000 of my neighbours and work colleagues and shopkeepers and medical staff - including many people I have known most of my life - think the same way as him and would happily throw me and other races and religions under a bus for their 'brothers and sisters' in another country.

Oh and the men screaming and shouting at her are his supporters who all think that a woman should know her place - young British born, raised and educated men who are so radicalised. They are the same people who picket schools because they don't agree with the things their children are taught about homosexuality - because it's OK to be rabidly homophobic in this day and age isn't it 😤

There are areas of this city which have become virtual no go areas for anyone who is not the same religion in the last 20 years. It was known for its diversity and multiculturalism however the large families and dependent relatives brought in who speak no English and have no desire to mix with the wider population or to give back to the country and our policy of 'being kind' means the minority values now overule the majority.

Dismiss me all you like but the reality is that
I am genuinely scared living here now and for my own children's future.

She just is. She nearly made me not vote Labour.

’Just is’

Come on. Surely you’re better than this?

The point is her stance didn't matter to the zealots who've tried to unseat her and Labour from the seat. Her seat was one of those targeted by the Workers Party or other independents obsessed over that one issue.

As a female who grew up in this area also and was spat on and verbally abused regularly just because of my white skin, I wholeheartedly agree with your entire post.

But then again both myself and others in my position have never been allowed to talk about or complain as I will be labeled a racist or right-wing. 😡

ExtraOnions · 05/07/2024 17:09

Every year for the past 9 year Jess Phillips had stood up in parliament to read out the names of women, murdered by men, over the preceding 12 months. Every single one .. it takes over 5 minutes, and the anger and sadness she feels is obvious.
She campaigns to highlight violence toward women and girls, and is now in the receiving end of that behaviour from some Racist, Misogynistic man.

Is he, and his mob, really the kind of people that the pro-Gaza people want representing them?

I am so sorry you are in fact being subjected to terrible racism yourself. Have you considered reporting these crimes to the police? Spitting is assault.

I liked what Harriet Harman was suggesting that a cross party women's group gathers and tackles big issues

If only she knew what a woman was...🤔

radiatorbed · 05/07/2024 17:14

MauveCrow · 05/07/2024 16:02

They were heckling her for exactly the same reason that Raynor had to sit cowed in a room full of men while begging for them to tell their community to vote for her.

It seems the "independents" have their own ideas if how politics should be conducted and what part women should play it in it.

One way or another Labour will have to confront this.

Yes they will.

narniabusiness · 05/07/2024 17:14

I was disgusted by the way Jess was heckled during the results announcement. It was completely unacceptable whether you wanted her to win or not.
I have looked up Jody’s campaign statement and it only mentions Palestinian politics, and absolutely nothing about Birmingham or any other issues at all. Would he have been an active constituency MP if elected? He certainly wasn’t claiming he would be.
I presume that only the candidates family and campaign team are allowed into the count, so I assume the heckling came from Jody’s own team?

Wheresthebeach · 05/07/2024 17:15

Labour needs to start standing up for biological women. Fast.

Tracker1234 · 05/07/2024 17:15

Dinosaur is right. This needs to be stamped out. I fear it will get worse and worse under Labour who will be desperate not to be seen as ‘picking’ on communities. I have spent some time in Doha. You couldn’t pay me to live there. Men rule, women are covered up often completely. One man told me that a women’s body is only for her husband and the clothing she wears MUST NOT be fitted in anyway.

Merrilydancing · 05/07/2024 17:15

Those images will play straight into Reform’s (and worse) playbook.

These men are misogynistic and worse feel emboldened to do so very publicly with no recourse.

Labour needs to start standing up for biological women. Fast.

And stand up against the mob for the safety of their own MPs, particularly female ones. They've promoted mass immigration for decades and here we are.

I'd imagine Labour candidates are going to start heavily vetting which constituencies to stand for in future.

GAWD - I've spent far too much time challenging some really discriminatory views (linked to women's rights) on a different thread when I could have been celebrating this incredible human.

Leadership 👏🏼

LuluBlakey1 · 05/07/2024 16:22

I really like her. However, she does not conform to any expectation of a Deputy Prime Minister- that's why she is hated. She's a woman, not public school educated, didn't go to Cambridge, has a broad Manchester accent, was a single mother, left school at 16 with no qualifications, was a care worker and a union organizer, has a 'lively' dress sense and can look a bit 'ungroomed and unsleek' at times.
It's snobbery and misogyny.

No. For me it's because she is a rampant TRA.

Hummingbird75 · 05/07/2024 17:20

I don't think wider global issues should be allowed to infiltrate our politics here. It will be never ending hot bed that is impossible for any MP to manage, IF this is allowed to continue.

MPs should be standing solely on local issues. They can not and should not be getting involved in politics all over the world, that has NOTHING at all to do with the area they work in. It should be a zero tolerance policy that MPs represent local issues only surrounding their area and nothing else.

The minute we start to deviate into global politics then this will happen constantly and takes away all of the time, oxygen and energy from the very local issues they were being appointed for, because everyone has a different view on everything worldwide.

We allow PEACEFUL protest in this country, but this is at risk if it becomes uncontrolled mobs and thugs abusing our MPs and others, and not the peaceful protest at all.

RosaRoja · 05/07/2024 17:22

Thank you for all who contributed to this thread. It’s terrifying reading about these men’s behaviour. Thank you @Hummingbird75 for such an eloquent rebuttal to that poster’s uncalled for vitriol.

Wider politics affect us all, but the Palestine issue is not going to be resolved on the campaign trail.

Nope she can hold contrary ideas to you and still have a good idea.
We HAVE to stop discounting people on one thing
