What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

What are their politics that you agree with? Gaza? Protesting about the Israel by bringing violence and intimidation to our democratic process?

I thought I answered that; the first, not the second. And violence and intimidation has been part of our politics since Oswald Moseley in the 30s, the National Front in the sixties, the BNP and the EDL. And probably soon, Reform.

Can you just clarify: are you suggesting that violence in politics is acceptable? Because the NF, BNP and EDL have all done it?

changefromhr · 05/07/2024 20:27

Funny how posters think this is a "Muslim" thing when Jo Cox was literally murdered by a far right, white bloke who was NOT a Muslim. Same with TRAs intimidating women. They aren't doing it in the name of Islam are they?
This is a man problem. They just won't let women be.
And stop conflating Pro palestine feeling with violence and intimidation. Its lazy thinking that is.

Labor reaping what they sewed

JFC how ignorant can you be?!

Probably from a misogynist shouty racist who thinks a woman's place is at home cooking and sewing.

I'd clarify your reading comprehension. I just said violence is totally unacceptable. I am just pointing out it is not a new problem.

I think you mean Labour reaping what they sowed. #spellcheckaracist

Not so sure about that.

Well I don't think I want to go to Birmingham as a single mum with those sexist bullies there - not the best advertisement when it's tourist season is it?

tttigress · 05/07/2024 23:00

I would feel sorry for Jess Phillips except for the fact that she has been very keen to bury problems that areas have, just wanting to pretend everyone in Birmingham is part of one big happy family, where nothing bad happens.

Her is a tweet from her in February, following a claim that a neighbouring constituency was a no go zone:

I imagine she would get a similar reception there to the one she received last night.

Your link doesn't link.
Birmingham is quite clearly not a nice place, we can hear that from the speech she tried to give. I don't think she made them do that - or is she somehow all powerful as well as powerless over all men?

Sorry, the link said, what a wonderful place Sparkhill was, not a "no go zone" at all, and her kids go there on a daily basis and feel completely safe.

I am originally from Birmingham, but just return now to see family. It gets more segregated each time I return.

My point was, earlier in the year, and also with her resignation from the shadow cabinet, she was very keen to placate "the community".

Thyroidthings · 05/07/2024 23:19

@tttigress and it obviously worked for the majority who voted her back in...? Sorry, what was your point, that she was trying to keep everyone calm?

PublicsserviceHow · 05/07/2024 23:22

I must say I was also impressed but also utterly shocked by the barrage of bullying and abuse she received.

However there are other clips of Angela suckling up those men telling them she would do a cease fire now?

Playing with fire.

KenAdams · 06/07/2024 07:49

This isn't about Palestine. Jess resigned to vote for a ceasefire, how does that make her a Nazi and a baby killer? It's just a handy cause for these men to latch onto so there is backlash if they're arrested. This is 100% about her and Shabana Mahmood being women. We need to separate the two and not allow them to use the awful situation in Gaza to justify their actions.

Which is what you're all doing with the trans debate actually. Just because of her views on that, you're discounting all she does for VAWAG. You know who would read out those names if she didn't? Nobody. Those women are important too. They didn't die because men had access to women's spaces, they died because, well, men. Can we not use the trans issue to shut down every single other thing that we face as women at the hands of men? This is what you're doing by making it the ONLY issue. Women are still, in 2024, fighting to get our voices heard. Don't give them another reason not to listen to us.

In this case it absolutely was about Palestine. People doing the intimidating wanted Labour out and their Independent in. I hope Jess Phillips will in time give her account of the entire election campaign and name those responsible. Those thugs should have been kicked out immediately.

Shouldn't the police able to find those responsible rather than Jess Phillips? Or maybe they are too scared to police the area.

It was quite interesting the hecklers of Nigel Farage were immediately escorted out of the building, but the security seemed too scared to do anything at the Jess Phillips count.

No, it's about getting their male candidate in who supports and was laughing at their misogyny. An independent has no power to change anything like a candidate that's part of the party with the largest majority. This was not about Palestine at all.
