What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

Blimey that acceptance speech has opened my eyes. I didn’t appreciate what was going on re single non local issue independent. That is really frightening. Chances are they will get voted in next GE. If there is anything to make me vote reform that does. I won’t of course but many will and have done clearly. Labour, and all those in power, need to stop this immediately before it spreads to other cities. This is threatening democracy.

I've had a 'scales falling from the eyes' moment in the wake of this speech too. (That's aside from my own views of Phillips tending toward both the positive and the negative). Also, some sobering posts from the PPs above, who live in this general area and have been victims of similar behaviour, and the successful independent candidates who have seemingly been elected on anything but their interest in UK politics, clarify the situation further.

It's a thoroughly shocking, deeply depressing picture. . 2024 is a dangerous time to be a woman.

I suspect that if they were arrested there would be riots.

Bear in mind that Labour have been talking about bringing in a law to specifically outlaw Islamophobia, even though hate crimes against Muslims are already covered in existing legislation.

Be aware that such an Islamophobia law could be used by extreme Islamist groups like this to aggressively shut down any criticism of anyone who is Muslim.

Do you really want to risk being prosecuted for Islamophobia for pointing out the violent misogyny of these hecklers?

listsandbudgets · 05/07/2024 15:36

No that is not the reason.

The reason she sounded so shocked is because her share of the vote went down by 26.9% and she only won by 693 votes. Last time her majority was about 10600.

She nearly lost the election. Her colleague Khalid Mahmood in Perry Barr lost his seat to an independent. Prior to that he had a majority of over 15000.

Certainly the heckling and dirty politics were completely unacceptable and she had every right to be upset by them. However, she came uncomfortably close to losing her seat and regardless of anything else being hit in the ballot box like that must have been a huge shock.

It’s been very widely reported that certain Birmingham constituencies were going to be closely contested over the Gaza issue. Do you really think after 5 weeks of campaigning that it was ‘a surprise’!

Jess knew she had to resign from the cabinet over Gaza to save her seat and that was late last year.

“Save her seat” or “represent the people who voted for her”?

I know a lot of female MPs get horrible abuse - but wonder why she and Angela Rayner seem to be such targets? Whatever you think about peoples politics - slashing tires, death threats? Surely we can do better as a country than this.

Working class northern women with regional accents who didn't go to Oxbridge.

radiatorbed · 05/07/2024 18:19

Just being a woman is enough. I think you maybe surprised to find out how much abuse say Kemi Badenoch or Rosie Duffield get also.

Inlaw · 05/07/2024 18:23

Surprised people think this is tiktok ‘framing’. You should go on tiktok. Specifically tiktok live. You will find these people spouting religious extremism and campaigning to take over British politics with sharia law. The Gaza issue also. But it’s also about sharia.

Black women suffer badly (Kemi) and also those who stand up to the Trans madness (Duffield and also Kemi).

I've only seen the footage of the election wins, but Farage also got very vociferous heckling too.

There seems to be a view that here that only white people can heckle.

The heckling was wrong but then so was telling Diane Abbott to fuck off and saying she'd stab Jeremy Corbyn in the front
I've lived in Birmingham my whole life and don't agree multiculturalism has failed here, in my experience the opposite is true

yes but he wasnt being spat at or called a baby killer, was he? I think the pps have hit the nail on the head when they said it is a class thing but also it exposes the hatred of women (the ones who are not quiet, subservient and retiring anyway). It is truly horrifying, and I hope those men face consequences. We used to be able to disagree respectfully. We need to be aiming for that again.

Tutorpuzzle · 05/07/2024 18:30

It’s interesting that the Farage heckler was promptly ‘marched out’ by security. JP had to virtually beg for hers to be removed🤔.

I agree with you OP. It is horrifying and shameful that we are allowing this behaviour of her and other female MPs within our democratic process.

Shame on those who perpetrate, and also those who condone it. The latter including one or more posters on this thread. Apologists for misogynistic abuse and intimidation, which has killed at least one female MP and victimised countless others....and on a predominantly female website!! I don't think these posters even know how low they have sunk.

It is not okay for either of these MPs to have to tolerate this. It needs to stop.

There is an interesting blog that I currently can't find to link which is written by a Sikh immigrant who says we as a nation have to stop being ashamed of our flag and of being British.
He is proud of both, he is a proud British Punjabi Sikh and says we should all start being proud to stand up for our flag and our values. And that if we think another country does it better then we should move there.

Tracker1234 · 05/07/2024 19:00

Birmingham is an ideal example of multiculturalism- are you joking? I have a family member who was a District Nurse there. She was brought up in Birmingham and has now got another role well out of Birmingham because she couldnt take it anymore. Going to houses where the men would make inappropriate comments to her whilst telling their wives what to say.

That's interesting I'll have a look. My grandparents brought my parents over during the Windrush era. They came to help rebuild the country, assimilate and live alongside other British citizens. They did not want to bully, manipulate, dictate and take over.

I'm not in her constituency but I have a friend who is and says she's an outstanding MP for the people she represents. Given the intimidation she has faced and will no doubt still have to contend with I admire her. To the pp who said she sounded shell shocked due to losing so many votes I disagree - Labour know they face a threat from "independents" the barrage of abuse thrown at female MPs and particularly Labour candidates who won't support "independent" viewpoints has been shameful. I fear for the future of democracy following this election.

Me too - it really does feel like our democracy and whole way of life is under threat. This cannot be allowed to continue.

Well done Jess! Please continue to stand up for women.
