AIBU to think that tonight's victory brings in a new dawn.
A world where there is better benefits system, a world where childcare isn't the constant headache it is now, a world where workers's rights will be respected and expanded,
a world where private schools are no longer charity's, a world where those who can afford it are taxed, a world where asylum seekers are not sent off on a plane but treated with respect, a world where everyone will be housed, a world with more medical staff, a world where SEN children don't have to beg for taxi;s to go to school, a world where diagnosis or those with ND conditions children and adult is made easier, a world where every child has free lunches not just in school but in the holidays to.
A kinder gentler world at long last.

The Tories have said they’d deal with the gangs without doing anything about it. I read recently most are biased in the U.K. As with many things, Labour will make a difference by actually doing something - a proper attention to looking for them and prosecuting for eg. They’ve also talked about creating safe routes, and maybe cooperating with France who offered Calais processing at one point. Nobody is getting ina boat for all their spare cash if they can be processed safely. This stuff is well known.

That’s a joke, right?

Is that seriously what you think the Tories have been doing? Telling the police and Border Force to do nothing? And the French will be accepting those refused entry to the UK in France? 🤦‍♀️

Oh come on, the majority of the migrants in the boats are coming in that way because they know that if there was a legal route they wouldn't be accepted. Many of them have been refused asylum in Europe.

I am in favour of immigration but it has to be controlled. We cannot let everyone who wants to come here in because it's just not viable.

Nope. They haven’t applied elsewhere as international law says they don’t have to. They want to apply in the U.K. (maybe family ties draw them, maybe language - it’s certainly not the generous way we treat asylum seekers because our behaviour there is abysmal) and the Tories have removed all safe routes.

foghead · 05/07/2024 14:46

Sorry op, I also think you're deluded. I'm sorry for all of us tbh.
Life will not get any better and we'll carry on with this downward spiral we're on.
Labour have always mismanaged the finances so I doubt anything will be different. There'll be less jobs, prices will continue to rise. They'll blame it on the Tories to detract.

It’s only a “landslide victory “ because of the first past the post system. In the seats that have been called thus far, the Labour vote has remained pretty stagnant. The actual “victory” is for Reform. It all feels quite reminiscent of the Brexit referendum vote. I’m glad the Tories have gone, but I can see this being a one-term Labour government.

Yeah this.

If you think about this, this is actually a terrifying result.

Labour didn't really make any real gains, the Conservatives simply lost. Reform who are extremely dangerous and devisive made massive gains in real numbers but not seats. They use the same kind of rhetoric and style of campaigning that Trump does. They will continue their march.

This will push the Conservatives to the right to try and win back those Reform voters.

The Lib Dems won't hold onto their voters because most of them are just protest voters.

This is not a good result for most and least of all women. Most people want a fairly liberal, fairly tolerant government. Most people don't want extremeism but that is what we are moving towards.

Look at the state the USA is in and we appear very keen to ape them.

They've been stripping funding from all the services designed to a) prevent illegal crossings, and b) process asylum applications. It's a strategy specifically designed to make it look like there are massive increases in illegal immigration ("Look at the backlog! We can't keep up, there are so many! Stop the boats!"), while disguising the fact that legal immigration has doubled since Brexit, with non-EU immigration making up for the drop in EU immigration and then some.

I feel like OP is the snowman in Frozen when he says he can’t wait for summer 😂

You're wrong. Back in 2019 the Government admitted that 6,000 asylum seekers to the UK had already applied for asylum elsewhere.

Oh alright sone in 2019 did so it’s true of all of them. Ok.
Edit: hang on? 2019? That’s just filtered in. Yes, in 2019 they might have. We were still in the EU. You could claim in the first country but go elsewhere once approved. And in fact, if they hadn’t applied at the point of entry we could send them back to do so unless we agreed with the country concerned. Totally different in 2019.

Stop twisting words, no one has said that everyone who comes here is a failed asylum seeker from elsewhere but some of them are. Like the boat crossings, some of them will be people in genuine need but many aren't.

HoorayHurrah · 04/07/2024 23:45

I agree @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g People have been whipped up about asylum seekers when they are a good thing. we won;t last long without their contribution that is for sure. I've been told that many were waiting for a Labour victory because they didn't want to risk being flown to Africa if they came under a Tory government so that's another cause for celebration.
At least now they will be welcomed and looked after so that they can properly contribute as so many have done over centuries.

Yeah, right. All those working in car washes/takeaways to pay back the gangmasters - yep, they’re all eager to get a job in care homes. And how many asylum seekers? Any number of men?

And look at the Jess Phillips situation? Nice, isn’t it?

You said many. And you are yet to prove that it’s any since we left the EU and the rules changed.
You're obsessing about minor details, immigration wise anyway. Tiny fraction.

We now have useless lying Labour

Wind your neck in luv we all know that Labour are 100% better than the Tory shit show
