AIBU to think that tonight's victory brings in a new dawn.
A world where there is better benefits system, a world where childcare isn't the constant headache it is now, a world where workers's rights will be respected and expanded,
a world where private schools are no longer charity's, a world where those who can afford it are taxed, a world where asylum seekers are not sent off on a plane but treated with respect, a world where everyone will be housed, a world with more medical staff, a world where SEN children don't have to beg for taxi;s to go to school, a world where diagnosis or those with ND conditions children and adult is made easier, a world where every child has free lunches not just in school but in the holidays to.
A kinder gentler world at long last.

You forgot the last bit: funded by fairies.

HoorayHurrah · 05/07/2024 13:38

@FinalCeleryScheme Why so? Is it a joke to think that people are happy that they will not be flown to africa and might have the chance to make a good life for themselves and there family here, as well as the country as a whole.

I’m very positive about labours win. But there’s no money. This term needs to be about building trust and steadying the ship. Not sure if there’s much more they can do.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 05/07/2024 13:41

State pensions are already taxed if the person is meeting the income tax threshold

tennesseewhiskey1 · 05/07/2024 13:41

Ffs 😂😂😂 come on, no one is that deluded. This isn’t in the night garden Op- this is real life.

A world where the word women is banned

Good lord.

Of course the word woman isn't going to be banned. Neither is breastfeeding, mother etc. This is just like the so called 'war on Christmas' that the right wang have tried to revive every November.

When 4.3 million children are living in poverty, I am shocked that otherwise sensible women (yes, I said it - gasp) are falling for this straw man culture war that they've stoked almost entirely to distract from the rest of their abysmal record.

The worst thing you'll likely have to deal with is gender neutral bathrooms. I think you can cope.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2024 13:42

@FinalCeleryScheme

I couldnt' agree more-a new dawn is shining it's light on this beleaguered country.
Better education, health and those who need taxing taxed.. Also pleased that state pensions might be taxed. to many rich pensioners and to many children in poverty. Look forward to more equity in housing. for a start, everyone having a house over the next few years, and maybe a tax on underoccupied properties.

A willing workforce about to enter this country and instead of been hated, been welcomed and ready to contribute. many people in france were crying tears of joy this morning and that is according to that nasty channel GB news so even they had to admit it.
I know things happen immediately but how good is it to be living in a time when it is a possibility..the first thing I hope Labour does is give the vote to younger people because they are our future and they are the most thinking educated generation for a long time,. I am a teacher and every day I am amazed by there compassion there curiosity and there care for the less fortunate and the planet.
We have made a start.

Where was this utopia during the last Labour government?

5128gap · 05/07/2024 13:46

No, OP. We have been taken so far from this by the outgoing government that it will take a long time to get to a place even close to it. You need to manage your expectations have patience, and rather than see today as a destination, see it as the first step of a journey to a better place.

littleburn · 04/07/2024 23:50

😂😂😂 With the best will in the world OP, I think you may end up slightly disappointed.

This.
Politics is cyclical. In 10 years we’ll all be moaning about useless, corrupt labour and dreaming of a landslide victory for someone else.
I salute your optimism but I think if you believe that there is going to be any discernible change to your life in the near future you are being rather naive.
Most of these change are going to take years to actually happen or make any difference. Many will simply just not be possible due to a huge lack of money.
I hope you get what you want but I’m not holding my breath that the country is all now magically fixed.
It is, after all, still being run by humans. They will make mistakes, do stupid things, lie and get greedy. It’s what humans do.

Exactly. Starmer will need at least two terms to make a tangible improvement that could be recognised as "progress". Everything in the first term will have to be about getting some money in the bank to actually pay for the progress - and that's all about economic stability, aka "the boring stuff nobody wants to talk about".

Brace yourself for a few years of quiet, calm and sensible administration.

Dream on

Ha ha, perfect response.

I expect OP may well be very disappointed.

Rockschooldropout · 05/07/2024 14:00

It’s a pipe dream
There is so much damage to undo … it will take years before we see anything resembling “progress” and I don’t think we’ll wake up to “change” in the morning .. unless you count a new government as change .. I am glad to see the Tories go but I’m not whooping from the rooftops because there is a lot to be done and Labour can’t even make a dent in it in one term

SD1978 · 05/07/2024 14:00

If Starmer doesn't stop the boat crossings as promised, I can tell you now that Reform will be the winning party in 5 years time. I didn't vote Reform but Nigel Farage is about to make the House of Commons very interesting.

And I would add that the landslide victory for “someone else” could conceivably be Nigel Farage.

Look at this Sky link - although Labour have a large seat majority, most of the Tory losses (in numbers of votes, not seats) went to Reform. The total number of labour votes was up only 1.6%. Society has not changed.

Looking at the seats situation only is quite misleading if you want to know what percentage of people voted Reform. They only have 4 seats, but got 14.3% of the votes. I expect they will lobby for a different system than FPTP now.

You're assuming that he'll actually show up. I don't doubt that he will to begin with, but once the excitement wears off - and he realises that he has absolutely no influence over anything tangible - he'll begin to show up about as much as his Brexit Party MEPs did.

margotmargeaux · 05/07/2024 14:05

This has got to be a wind up 🤣

RipleyGreen · 05/07/2024 14:05

But it wasn’t a landslide victory at all. This is no Blair ‘97 moment (& anyway look how that went…) The main cause of the Conservatives loss is that Reform picked up 15% of the votes. Basically exactly the same shift to populist right as Europe but because of our first past the post electoral system the beneficiaries are Labour.

On the contrary...this is the first time that the Conservatives have had to share the right-wing vote with a party that isn't campaigning on a single issue, and they absolutely collapsed. Meanwhile, Labour have had to share the left-wing vote with everybody else on that side for decades, and have never done as badly as the Conservatives did this time round.

If anything, this just represents a levelling of the playing field, even if you don't consider that most Reform votes were based on protest.

The only scary part is that the Conservatives might try to woo those voters back by going even further to the right, and then people will vote for them next time round when Labour's term trying to fix the mess inevitably hasn't produced unicorns and rainbows fast enough.

OldTinHat · 05/07/2024 14:09

I don't think I am deluded. This is a landslide victory. it;s what we wanted and there is nothing to stop it.

It's not what I wanted. I didn't want the Tories either, btw.

You're sounding naive (being kind) or, simply put, definitely deluded.

He doesn't need to have any influence to keep his support happy. He'll never be off TV as he has more personality (albeit like that of a pub gobshite) than most of the house combined. Him tilting at windmills with a pint in his hand will suffice.

Yes i agree with you but i suppose I am happy that at least there is a real possibility that it could happen much more so than for the last 14 years'. That a government will act for the poor, the workers, the children, the migrants the vulnerable.

We'll have to wait and see on that, but Farage does like to be heard and cause controversy, he has had more coverage I think than the Lib Dems.

Sahara123 · 05/07/2024 14:18

Less of the “we “ please , I didn’t vote Labour.
None of this has happened yet in my 64 years and I’m not holding out much hope now.
