I’m calling it now - in 8 years we’ll all be saying ….get Labour out/vote Tory. Sadly I really do believe no party will be able to get it right for this country as the world is too fucked. We will never control migration, the super rich will always fuck us over, religious hatred will never go away, misogyny will continue to erode the rights of women and girls. The list goes on.

I am delighted however that the SNP tanked in Scotland. Great to see Stephen Flynn squirming on TV - he had the audacity to say the the SNP had to now focus on the “bread and butter” issues for the Scottish people - you mean like gender self ID, allowing males to provide intimate care on women against their will and making sure rapists are cushty in women’s prisons? Yeah, real priorities for the average Scot in the street!

They are so out of touch. Maybe this time they will listen to the people of Scotland?

@LilyofftheValley do you care about the other atrocities and genocides around the world or just this one, which was provoked by Hamas on October 7th?

There's been a huge rise in anti semitism in the UK, attacks on Jewish people and Jewish schools needed protection. The Jewish people in the UK are not to blame for Gaza. The weekly marches don't help when people use images, chants and call for intifada. No wonder Jewish people here feel unsafe. Everyone should feel safe here.

I agree with the first part of your post - any government is going to face a tough time dealing with global political and climate upheaval and the resulting refugees.

I listened to a podcast recently on the impact of climate change on parts of Africa and Asia and the resulting mass movement of people to less affected areas - it is literally migrate or die - I don’t see any way of countering that. And personally, I don’t think multiculturalism can work when people are forced together crammed into ever reducing spaces.

Another epic fail was the banning of wood burning stoves in new build homes. Given many SNP supporters live in rural parts of Scotland where they can be cut off from the main grid and rely on burning their own wood - this was another nail in the coffin.

They did go on to review the ban to make it less of an impact on such communities but the damage was done as folk just thought they were putting “daft green policies” before their needs/livelihoods.

Scottish government to review wood burning stove restrictions - BBC News

The policy was designed to help reduce air pollution and tackle climate change.

No, nope absolutely no congratulations whatsoever. Labour will know destroy women's rights and allowing sick men to invade women only spaces. Tories should of remained in power (and this comes from a Tory hater btw) or The Reform party should of gotten in.

@LilyofftheValley how do you propose he brings the conflict to an end? The US latest negotiations weren't accepted by Hamas who wanted changes or Israel who are now currently accepting peace talks and have sent a representative. It's not exactly easy or in the control of our country. Hey Hamas release the hostages and stop firing rockets at Israel. Hey Netanyahue stop going after Hamas when innocents are in the way. I wish it was easy!

Don't be obtuse. I meant he needs to show more support towards an independent Palestine, not that he can fix it on his own.

I think with the way this country has supported Ukrainian refugees and the Ukrainian war effort, I don't think it's fair to say we only care about our own country. But we in Europe have very limited impact on what happens in the middle east. Countries like Egypt and the UAE are much bigger than us in their influence in the Gaza conflict.
I absolutely agree it's horrific that actions of hammas terrorists and the Israeli government are causing such a huge loss of life, but I'm not sure what you would suggest we could do. We tried to intervene in Iraq, and ultimately just made things worse.

I think he needs to show that we care about war victims that are not just white European. If not, he risks further alienating traditional Labour voters. I say this as someone who is elated at his victory. I just think he needs to position himself differently on the Isreal / Palestine issue.

Wow what a speech. Amen to all he said .
So lovely to see a female chancellor and deputy prime minister too.

saoirse31 · 05/07/2024 23:26

I really love that Reform essentially gave Starmer such a big majority 😁. But seriously I think it's nice to see a Prime Minister who seems to have a serious approach to being Prime Minister. A nice change!

Agree!! I thought his speech was perfectly pitched. I felt like his heart was in it and he believed what he said. He sounded very sincere.

I think it’s helpful that he has a lot of work and life experience outside of politics and that he came to politics fairly late (2015, I think). His cabinet seem very competent too.

I don’t want to build up my hopes too much, but will see. I hope we will see competent and compassionate government and leadership.

We are all doomed, more crime ,more immigrants, more boats, flood gates opened,Labour is the worst party to have running this country, so all you Labour supporters you have made your bed now sleep in it.oh and you don't care about your own country.

crime happens if people choose to commit crime, regardless of who is in power, humanity should want to be better and not commit crime to begin with.

Rubbish. The police are currently a toothless organisation. Due to all the Tory cuts.

I get fed up with people who assume it's easy to sort and by saying we support an independent Palestine it would just happen. The power some think we have
