Congratulations to you all in uk, brilliant to see labour win. Commiserations tho to snp. But Tories defeated!!!

I’m sad labour won for me and my daughters. It’s not the trans people who will be the issue, it’s the men who will be exploiting the ability to gain access to women’s spaces so easily.

Tattletwat · 05/07/2024 08:13

Be careful what you wish for because you just got it is my opinion. I'm a supporter of neither useless twonks.

If you actually look at the results I wouldn't call it a labour win, i'd call it a conservative loss. The percentage change isn't that huge. But as they say a change is as good as a rest. Bring it on.

I think if they're complacent about it though, they'll be gone as quick as they came. The big parties really need to take note on the reform vote numbers. More than the lib dems. Although the mumsnetters of the world will be horrified and scream racism at anyone who voted reform, that vote share really needs to be considered. People are pissed, they didn't vote for the other parties for a reason and those reasons really need to be strongly taken into consideration.

Yep.

There are many disenfranchised people .

That said, where I am there were queues at the polling station and I haven't seen that for years.

MigGirl · 05/07/2024 08:13

I've woken up to a Labour MP, for the first time in 100 years we have a Labour MP in our constituency and I finally feel like my vote has counted 😀. @Bushmillsbabe I didn't vote on that issue as I don't believe the Conservative have been doing anything to protect female only spaces until they decided to use it as an election campaign.

HotPipe · 05/07/2024 08:18

A change of management for the UK. Now it's time for the graft.

Labour needs to tackle the migrant gangs as promised, turn round the asylum seekers pronto, sort out legal migration - all as promised. Get potholes fixed, councils working efficiently, sort out knife crime and the mood in our great country can be uplifted again.

Get our NHS waiting times cut, immediate doctors appointments (fed up of the morning call!), tackle anti social behaviour and get the British Energy company up and running - cheap bills for all. We so need this.

Get those SureStart Centres up and running again, so many people miss them.

Bloody leave our women's rights alone. Not happy if he messes with our rights.

If all the above is sorted, I will be a happy bunny.

I am absolutely delighted that Jacob Rees Mogg has lost his seat. To Labour too. He’ll only get kicked upstairs, but still….also Tories wiped out in Wales!!!

Just saying i think it's going to get alot worse.

It can’t.

She behaved very strangely when they announced it didn't she!

She didn't give a speech to congratulate the winner or accept any responsibility for losing her seat. I thought it spoke volumes about her character. Plenty of other conservatives who lost their seats managed to behave in a dignified and professional manner.

That was one of the best announcements 🥳

I’m a lifelong Labour voter and have been waiting for too long for this day to come.

I hope it doesn’t take the new government long to sort out this mess.

Me too!!!

I totally agree. Incredible that Labour won a "landslide" victory with fewer votes than Corbyn got in 2019!

I do think there is something very, very wrong with her. I know that people are over-eager on here to diagnose personality disorders, but imo, she very obviously has at least one.

She seems out of it a lot of the time? The way she acknowledged nobody and just scarpered was just very weird.

Yes, it’s worrying. I know the count is not finished, but this graph from the BBC website is quite telling…it’s very clear that Labour haven’t won - their vote has barely changed in % terms, but the Tory’s have lost big time, and Reform have made huge progress. Even the Lib Dem’s, who have far more seats, don’t really have many more votes. The Greens have done well though!

When you have people worrying about housing and immigration it's not so much of a shock.

That some are elected as independents whilst campaigning on Gaza is also a shock. Yes most people would like the war to end and peace reign, but usually a candidate cares about improvements here rather than goings outside their control in the middle east. That will lead to more devision and more reform voters. People don't usually get elected whilst primarily talking about what they will do for another country!

Very poor. Most manage to congratulate the winner. She doesn't seem aware of the damage she did.

This.

They didn't really care. Its not a new issue. Until they realised it would help with some votes they didn't bother hence stonewall and mermaids progressing so far unchecked under their government. Easy to blame others, that's what they do.

Startingagainandagain · 05/07/2024 08:01

Some really sore losers on this thread...

Accept that Labour won by a landslide and that the majority of us are happy to see the back of the Tories who used the last 14 years to make themselves and their dodgy mates richer while everything crumbled from the NHS to public services around them.

Mow Labour has a massive task of trying to rebuild things but at least some hope has returned.

Pointing out that Labour won not because they have gained popularity but because other parties lost votes is just what the numbers say. It doesn't make people who analyse those numbers sore losers. It just means they can think.

It also doesn't make the Reform gains any less terrifying. Just because they happened should we ignore Farage's troubling links to Putin. His misogyny? His racism?

It doesn't make the ousting of Jo Cox's sister by someone running on an anti jewish ticket any less troubling. There's a huge amount if racial tension in some areas of the North and they will become a ripe target for Reform going forwards.

It doesn't make the forthcoming decimation of women's rights any less serious. Those issues were brought to light only by brave women who stood up to the likes of Stonewall. JKR braved immense hatred to make the issues more widely acknowledged.

After brexit people who lamented the vote were branded remoaners. They could see the damage being inflicted on the UK but people tried to constantly to quiet them by calling them sore losers. In the end they were completely correct. Ironically many of those that voted Brexit now vote Reform despite Farage's long desired split from Europe being a shit show that has left the UK poorer and more isolated.

I personally would love to see a capable centrist Labour government which cared deeply about protecting the NHS. Reestablishing ties with Europe and protecting the vulnerable in society, including women. What we've got now under Starmer isn't that. It is far from that.

We've already seem women being raped in prisons and hospitals. Increased assaults in school"s unisex toilets. Bodies like the police being idealocially captured by Stonewall. The Tavistock scandal.

Starmer will have to pay his dues to his donors and this situation will worsen.

These things need to be said. It's fine for women to express their concerns without being scolded.

Dotjones · 05/07/2024 08:55

It's great to see the SNP decimated so comprehensively. Given their intentions to use this election as a de factor referendum I guess they'll shut up about independence now. What do you mean, of course not, they'll twist this as a mandate for it?

It's good to see the Tories lose but terrible to see Labour win. Whoever got in, it's going to be a shit-show for the next few years. There is no cause for optimisim, things are going to get much worse.

I agree. The election of those independent candidates plays right into the hands of Reform, suggesting there are large numbers of people in parts of the country who are disconnected from the country they live in and primarily motivated by their religious affiliations. With those independents and Reform MPs now in Parliament together, expect politics to become more toxic now, not less.

FundingitallHow · 05/07/2024 08:59

Yes it's worrying re women's rights but thanks to Jane in London, jk R and others Rosie Duffield starmer has made at least 2 firmer starkers on the issue. He doesn't want gender ideology taught in school and he doesn't want trans women in biological women's spaces.. Two small things but something to be held too..
He also knows the issue is very much prevalent.

I want to thank fellow mntter who raised the issue and educated me on it. I have 2 young dds.

We now have a Labour MP in my area that has been conservative since it was created over 100 year ago-that is fabulous! Bring it on.

Wow I didn't realise this. The growing anti Jewish feeling seen on marches and campaigning on Gaza will worry people in those areas. There appears to be growing use of the word intifada revolution too. It feels very decisive rather than unity as people together.

FundingitallHow · 05/07/2024 09:02

@US2gether not quite true if you look into how stonewall operated and how this ideology has infiltrated Europe and the US. At least they were waking up to it and beginning to understand it.
Unfortunately I don't believe keir gets it yet it's a non issue for him.
