My 26 year old son told me he is voting for Reform. I am so disappointed, I thought I brought him up to be a bright and empathetic human being, but whenever I try to talk to him he keeps regurgitating right wing talking points like “people should be able to think for themselves Mum” and “I have a right to my culture.” What culture? Britain doesn’t even have a culture, everything we got came from elsewhere. He should be able to see that, I raised him better than this!

I am so devastated. I have a letter penned for his place of employment and I don’t have the heart to send it, he’s my son at the end of the day but his employers have the right to know about the dark thoughts that are in his head. So does his girlfriend too, she is such a wonderful person. If I found out she was voting the same way I think I would have a breakdown.

What is going on in the world? These are scary times.

So you'll see your son out of a job and without a girlfriend just because he doesn't vote how you'd like him to?

Wow. I thought the left were supposed to be the compassionate ones but you shaft your own family if you don't get your own way.

To my mind, this debate has only ever been about illegal/economic migrants, who are not contributing in the same way; increased numbers = more pressure on schools, housing, the NHS etc, all of which are already under immense strain.“

”Illegal” immigrants won’t be accessing those services 🙄

That's why I said illegal/economic: people who are here legally but contributing little to society, whilst obtaining healthcare, housing, education. This IS a real problem in many areas. You know this.

So the 🙄 is all yours...

I hope that’s a wind up. McCarthyism within the family

I haven’t sent the letter yet, I am obviously torn about it thank you very much. People should not get the wrong message that I don’t care about my family, but this is serious. I have already told his Grandmother and she isn’t best pleased either so it’s not just me. I have to make sure he understands the severity of what he is about to do on Thursday, not just for the country, but potentially the entire world if the far right continue to get emboldened like this.

I think you went too far with the granny reference. It was sort of convincing up until then.

I do accept that some voters may be too stupid to see racism when it's staring them in the face. That isn't their fault and it's usually pretty obvious.

I don't hold it against people who clearly aren't capable of critical thinking, but anyone with average intelligence or above that votes Reform is pretty obviously racist. They might not openly say racist things, but they're willing to be complicit in racism, which is the same thing. And misogyny, homophobia etc.

I'll counter that with you'd think sensible normal people would fall for the idea people can change sex.

Shortfatsuit · 03/07/2024 11:42

Jumpingthruhoops · 03/07/2024 10:28

If I haven't, it's because a lot of what you said isn't relevant: you are focused on humankind, feelings, emotions, kindness etc.

All of which are lovely and necessary for a functioning society but, respectfully, don't solve what is a genuine problem and will become a bigger problem if we don't try to do something about it:

NUMBERS!

We need to take the emotion out of this topic and just try to answer the fundamental question, which remains:
'The UK needs to reduce its numbers. How do we go about doing this?'

I didn't say anything at all in the post that was addressed to you about humankind, feelings, emotions, kindness. You seem to be even more confused than I thought!

They are trying to be satirical or Tory HQ as 24hrs to scare everyone into voting for them and not Labour. They are on other threads doing the same!

Do you think Nige is going to stick up for womens’ rights do you the same man who believes Andrew Tate is an ‘important voice for men’, Andrew Tate the man who loves women!

Jumpingthruhoops · 03/07/2024 10:04

My post isn't confused at all.

Whether we're born here, migrate here, whatever, the fact remains that the UK IS overpopulated. These numbers are putting pressure on our services, which are already struggling to cope. This debate has only ever been about numbers - however, as soon as you mention the 'I' word, people lose their shit.

The very simple question is this: 'The UK needs to reduce its numbers. How do we go about doing this?'

Well one the Reform UK volunteer suggested to use the "illegal" immigrants as target practice for the army.

I mean, you do sound a bit deranged. I would put down the Guardian if I were you. It's not helping your parenting.

No the Daily Mail/ The Telegraph are much better.

The Telegraph is. I don't read the Mail. Presumably you read both to be able to compare them with the Guardian. I've read the Guardian and it's quality is reflected in its readership figures, although the cookery/restaurant section is very good.

LadyCrumpet · 03/07/2024 12:47

I think its feasible to be able to say you can see why Tate has a following in the current climate, I can, and I don't necessariliy think everyone that listens or has listened to Tate is a raging misogynist.

Its fully possible, despite what a lot think, to be able to agree with some points but not others that someone makes. If they are the only person saying it, then who else will people that agree flock to as representative?

Its the same with Farage/Reform. No one else will even entertain talking about the boats, the overpopulation of the UK, the decimation of services as there are just too many people, the overrunning of small villages with massive groups of men, etc etc.

But these are big issues, despite what most on here say, and it needs addressing. Just dismissing people and calling them racist because they want this dealt with is just stupid and immature.

And the refusal to listen and engage is what lead to Brexit. If a proper conversation/action was had before the referendum, I don't think we would have got Brexit.

I think many people need to be prepared for a shock come Friday morning. Forget shy Tory voters, its going to be shy Reform voters having the biggest effect, in my opinion.

And tbh, the government and all the 'racist' shouters will deserve it for not having the discussion in the first place.
