Am I being unreasonable?

So much potential. So wasted. All my friends who are barristers say the word , up in London, in all the chambers, is he is being blackmailed? Has he done something really really bad in a previous life? Is he secretly gay and worried about it coming out, so being blackmailed. They literally can't see any other possible reason for it.

Came to power, so bright, so clever, so much potential. Done nothing. So wishy washy. so clever, when you meet him, which many of my friends do, regularly as they are legal - either barristers or solicitors, they all say he's charming, bright. Not when you see him speak on stuff he isn't. It's like he's had a personality transplant.

And did you hear him with Jane re the trans and his' twaddle'? Nice one Jane. But she humiliated him, because he was so weak and naff.

Now he's come out with somethig a bit stronger today.

"Sir Keir Starmer has said transgender women do not have a right to access female-only spaces, amid confusion over Labour’s stance on which lavatories trans people should use.
The Labour leader said biological males who have legally transitioned should not enter areas designated for women, insisting those spaces “need to be protected”."

I'm not sure I can trust him anymore though. I wanted to, years ago, but he's failed me too many times.

Brown and his banking rescue package saved the country, and the government has made a nice profit from the investment too.

I think history will be kinder to Brown than the current climate is.

And in my opinion he's head and shoulders above all the PMs since.

FatOaf · 02/07/2024 14:26

Well. We have the 2004 GP contract to start with. Blair let them opt out of out of hours care! so we now have the circus that is 111 who seem to direct everyone to A&E rather than to a locum gp sat on his arse earning a fortune. Then didn't Blair take is into some war under false pretences 🤔, then there was the PFI disaster and etc etc etc..

Okay, fair enough when you give examples. I agree re PFI: Brown didn't invent it (Major did) but he made too much use of it, as well as choosing unsuitable partners, albeit to a lesser extent than subsequent Conservative governments with outsourcing agreements.

The GP contract was part of a larger reorganisation that was (predictably) not completed, with the intention of shifting a proportion of care from hospitals to the community. It was a bad deal, but it did less damage than the 2013 Lansley re(dis)organisation, which the NHS seems unlikely ever to recover from.

The Iraq war was a disaster. But it was opposed by more Labour MPs (about 25%) than Conservatives, who were wholeheartedly in support of it.

If you even have to ask how they fucked the country up I cannot help you.

your penultimate para about if I really cared about the rights of women and girls etc well if you cannot define what a women or girl is then there’s your problem, if you cannot accurately define them, you cannot help them with any of the issues they face or make their lives better. It’s really not difficult to grasp this basic point.

judging by your responses on this thread you’re not the sort of poster I’m usually minded to engage with either.

"I cannot help you"

Means you can't explain.

The rest of it? Excuses.

You don't really care about women and girls. There are far bigger issues.

This is cover for whatever you want to be.

JaneV1984Madness · 02/07/2024 14:30

Forgive me dibby I mistakenly atted at you and coolant delete it.

@Oblomov24.
To be honest that "statement" " gives me small hope because I think it's the first time he's used clear language on this issue..
That is a hook now to hold him too.

I honestly don't believe this issue has been on his radar and I don't believe he's understood the profound threat to women it poses. He's not been interested in it at all.

Jane from london, JK and Duffield and so on have dragged it under his nose and his top teams nose and maybe now he does get it? They have been lambasted with questions on this all the time.

My worry is, yes to safe women only spaces but what about intimate care and nurses and all of that?

Yes he maybe bluffing to sweep up women's votes but now he's come out and said that in clear language, he can be held accountable, on that at least.

Thanks for posting that.
I was voting labour anyway, but if even half of that is true, then it confirms I'm making the right decision.

Aladdinzane · 02/07/2024 14:33

PFI wasn't such an issue till the the coalition government cut real terms spending increases. It was actually a very good way of building new hopsitals efficiently with private expertise. They over paid, but by god we needed the new hopstials and schools after 18 years of Tory rule. As most PFI contracts come to an end, the state is taking back full control of well maintained, well serviced buildings.

The successes of the Labour years, far outweigh the bad things.

AnitaLoos · 02/07/2024 14:37

Wtf is this revolting crap about Starmer being blackmailed for being secretly gay? I’ve seen some low and stupid stuff on here but that takes the (Mumsnet) biscuit.

AnitaLoos · 02/07/2024 14:38

Absolutely desperate messaging. Can’t wait for this to be over and to see a decent, clever, principled person in no10 at last.

Yes, I'm working with 25 schools whose PFI contracts are about to come to an end. They might save some money by taking their buildings in house, but they also inherit a massive workload they haven't previously had to manage and most will need to employ people with the skills to do it. Plus their buildings are beautifully maintained, compared to other schools in the LA.

Absolutely. And the thankless work he has been doing since in tackling child poverty.

Meanwhile Cameron was lining his pockets and getting the Tories to bail out his employer, and trousered $10M in the process.

Totally agree.

My last state school was a PFI and my god the facilities were well maintained.

The stuff about PFI is mostly a rote learned point though, bit like the "pension raid" they don't actually know what it was. lol

I agree. Gordon Brown wrote an excellent article about poverty not long ago; I do wish he'd come back.

I have a couple of contractor friends who did some work at the House of Commons pre Covid. Nobody who had worked with Keir Starmer had a bad word to say about him (unlike Priti Patel, Dominic Raab and certainly Johnson).

Captainmycaptains · 02/07/2024 14:50

The Times also had a reported follow him around for 3 months and wrote an article and the conclusion seemed to be that he’s a decent, hardworking bloke who cares about making a difference, understands what it’s like to work to where he is, has a great sense of humour one in one, but can be a bit stiff on camera…
I can think of worse people for the job… like every bloody Tory ever for starters…
I don’t need someone who can quote Catullus in a jaunty manner I need some one who’s going to put their head down and get on with some work

Parrotcoop · 02/07/2024 14:52

Taking us to war was an abomination and unfortunately, for him, overshadows what was otherwise a very good Blair premiership, but it was supported by Conservative MPs more than it was Labour ones.

Done nothing? You don’t get to be DPP and leader of the Labour Party by doing nothing!

Huifen · 02/07/2024 15:00

I'm looking forward to having a hard working, decent, seemingly competent principled man in charge of this country. I think he's going to be the best we've had in at least 14 years ...

It won't. A big difference from the last Labour government is that there's no money. Last time they were able to throw money at fixing the damage done by the previous government and they did. Anyone working in health or education would love to return to those days, but they won't be able to do that this time.

They need something like an extra £20bn just to stand still on public services, so don't worry there'll be plenty of opportunity for you to say I told you so as they attempt to deal with the impossible situation the tories have left. Which of course is why they're not even trying to win.
