Washing and neighbours

To think it’s strange my neighbours never ever hang out their washing? Lovely day here but regardless they never hang their washing out?

I hang my washing out all year round! Have been known to hang out on Christmas Day if dry and mild enough. I don't own a tumble dryer and love the smell of outside dried clothes. I live in a hard water area so always iron everything.

Mrsredlipstick · 29/06/2024 16:54

To add to 'the garden might be spoiled' ills, my husband puts the pole of the outside line dryer through my white fancy garden table. If we have a party he gets arsey he can't peg out.
That drives me nuts. He does iron well though as a tailors son.

Kaftanesque · 29/06/2024 17:04

I hang out whenever the forecast is fine all year round.Tumble drier when wet -which obviously has been a lot recently. Love the smell of line dried clothes. My neighbour doesn't hang out because birds might poo on it but I can't honestly say we have birds galore and I have never had washing soiled.Plus tumble driers cost a lot to run and I actually enjoy pegging out weirdly!

The last time I hung washing outside I was still living at home as a teenager and I remember putting my leg into my jeans and out popped a huge spider. Arachnophobic me developed a life long aversion to hanging washing outside on that day 😁

You do realise that you can get spiders in your clothes hanging them up indoors? I have to throw my dressing gown down the stairs every day before I put it on - traumatised by the giant spider once found living in the armhole.

Riversideandrelax · 29/06/2024 19:41

I put washing out on an airer on my decking. Neighbours wouldn't be able to see it.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 29/06/2024 20:25

I don’t hang my washing out except bath mats. My house is close to the trees and I used to get spiders on clothes and that just put me off

I tumble dry in winter but always line dry when the weather allows and hadnt considered the pollen aspect of this. I'm not a hayfever sufferer but my DS is. I line dry and then iron. Should I avoid line drying his clothes to not impact his hay fever?

If he isn’t reacting, I wouldn’t worry about it. My household is basically the poster-family for allergies. We take our measures to solve actual problems, not just to follow general guidelines. It’s all very personal.

HueyDueyandBluey · 30/06/2024 00:49

Pollen allergies abound plus spider willies - no thanks. It's all crusty and horrible especially towels.

TippedOverTheGravyJug · 30/06/2024 00:56

We all have hay-fever 3 of us bad too.
I hang washing out all year. If its dry washing goes out. It just smells much nicer imo. It's not for everyone and that's fine.
In the past week I've been on a washing spree because it's been so nice. All curtains. Summer duvets. Mattress protectors , bedding. Towels, sofa covers, scatter cushions covers, chair covers literally have all been washed and hung out. I also enjoy washing, hanging , ironing .yep I'm batshit

StrawBeretMoose · 30/06/2024 01:03

When I was on maternity leave we started using a laundry service, I wonder if the neighbours thought we stopped washing clothes.

HueyDueyandBluey · 30/06/2024 01:10

@TippedOverTheGravyJug what possesses you to do something you wilfully make your hayfever so much worse?!!

echt · 30/06/2024 03:47

When we lived in the UK we had a Sheila Maid pulley airer in the utility room so never had to disfigure the back yard or radiators with washing.

Now I'm in Australia I have an out-of-sight (not in the 60s sense) washing line in the back yard and indoors a laundry to hang up washing. In neither case can my neighbours see it.

CraftyGoblin · 30/06/2024 03:52

Are you my neighbour? Garden's too full of tall plants for me to put a washing line anywhere! Waiting for my shed to collapse before I get my rotary line. Until then we manage with two maidens and a dryer.

GoldEagle · 30/06/2024 18:00

I always hang the washing outside if I can, I love the smell.

TickleMyPickle · 30/06/2024 18:03

I can see 5 of my neighbours gardens from mine and none of them ever put any washing out. I worry that they all think I’m the mad one, the washer is on at least once a day and I always have a line full!!

Whyamiherenow · 30/06/2024 18:09

I’ve just realised my neighbours on one side don’t hang their washing out either ….. in fact they don’t even have a washing line ….. I will ask them how they do their washing next time I have a coffee with them!

Deepf60 · 30/06/2024 18:19

I haven't got a washing line so haven't hung washing out for over 20 years, I don't iron either.

Irishbabylondon · 30/06/2024 18:28

Same here no matter how hot it is none of them put washing out. I've only seen a few get home deliveries for groceries. I saw nowt. This was when I was out of work, so would clean all day inside and out, washing dishes so see out the front. Where do they get food from ? They all freaking weird I swear. Now I'm out the door Monday to Friday at 0710 and not back in until 1600. And none of these lot work, honestly all sit out front of homes laughing about what they going to add to pip for more money. But come on where are the groceries ? Why no washing outside when it's 30c ? They got to eat but nothing. I've seen tk max bags, primark and poundland but not food bags. Yet nearly everyday they get amazon..what's going on.

Ilovecleaning · 30/06/2024 18:38

lol. This is funny. I would never notice what my neighbour hung on their washing line. It wouldn’t occur to me to look. Don’t worry about it. My DH notices everything about our neighbours. I couldn’t care less 😀

ilovegranny · 30/06/2024 18:39

One of the greatest joys in my sad little life is hanging out washing on a sunny day; rotary dryer so knickers and bras inside, towels, sheets and other big items on the outside. It’s a thing of beauty.

Another great joy is getting into bed where there is fresh line-dried linen.

Also, the environment, global warming, cost of living crisis, but I’ll leave that to the MN experts.

BluebirdBoogie · 30/06/2024 18:48

Shocking that so many think it's fine to use a tumble dryer when the work can be done by the sun and wind. Complete waste of electricity. It's just laziness.

Yup. My time is way too valuable to piss about hanging stuff on a line when I can shove it in a dryer in a under a minute 🤷‍♀️

SallyWD · 30/06/2024 19:03

MonsteraMama · 29/06/2024 12:08

Tumble dryers exist. HTH.

Yes but they're very expensive to run and bad for the environment! Why wouldn't you hang clothes outside on a sunny day? Clothes smell so much nicer when hung outside.

My dryer is brand new and costs hardly anything to run. It's the best rated appliance I own. As I said above I have no room for a line at the moment... but I'm also a wheelchair user and won't be hanging it our myself anyway. I air dry clothes on a maiden where possible but bedding and towels go in the dryer and I'm not sorry if people think that's lazy @BluebirdBoogie . I don't have the option to pay a carer more hours to hang washing out... or help me rearrange my garden so I can put a line up (saving for a landscaper). Not everyone can physically stand and hang up washing. We do shove the maidens outside sometimes on a hot day.

BooBooDoodle · 30/06/2024 19:25

I don’t notice these things but I do wonder why people don’t put washing out to dry and tumble dry everything. You can’t tumble dry everything, especially sports kits and other things. Sits in the house it can lead to mould and condensation issues over time.
