Washing and neighbours

To think it’s strange my neighbours never ever hang out their washing? Lovely day here but regardless they never hang their washing out?

You need to get a hobby!

spikeandbuffy · 29/06/2024 12:26

Not allowed here, wish I could!
I can lift my airer into my neighbours garden but it's a faff and I usually CBA

No ironing, or very little. Take out the machine as soon as it’s finished, hang it up and fold as soon as dries. Sorted. Only iron for special occasions.

Same. Never iron unless someone needs a shirt for a special occasion

Tittyfilarious · 29/06/2024 12:27

I'm the odd 1 out on my Street really as I hang washing out whenever I can but none of my neighbors do

bluecomputerscreen · 29/06/2024 12:27

yabu
one of us has really bad hayfever. drying outside this time of year would be very unpleasant for them.

Mnetcurious · 29/06/2024 12:29

It’s a weird thing to notice and be bothered about. You might also be wrong - my neighbours probably aren’t aware that I hang my washing outside as I have one of those umbrella rotary airers in a little patio area at the side which would not be visible to them from their house/garden.
However I don’t agree with all those who tumble dry instead of hanging washing outside on a sunny day if they’re able to - such an unnecessary waste of energy.

Why?
You just end up with a pile of ironing.

Neither of us likes ironing so we hang things up neatly inside.

Yes, we also tumble dry some stuff. This makes towels really soft and fluffy.

Hmm. I have neither a tumble dryer nor iron, I just buy clothes that don’t crinkle!

I thought Mumsnetters never hang out washing in case someone sees their knickers....

Don't forget spider willys

I've never hung washing out in 30 years and I've always had a garden

(Heated airer/tumble dryer)

Look at you with all your dryer money 😂

Op it never occurred to me to bother about other people's washing although I'm normally the last to hang mine out in the morning my neighbours have theirs out by the time sunrises!

I buy clothes that don't wrinkle I probably ironed a few pairs of holiday shorts last year and it annoyed me. DHirons his own stuff.

Devilsmommy · 29/06/2024 12:41

I never hang mine out either. Don't own a tumble dryer. Little one has bad hay fever. What's it to you what your neighbours do anyway?

MessyHouseHappyHouse · 29/06/2024 12:41

It’s pure laziness on a par with ordering Deliveroo 5 nights a week.

There’s an awful lot of lazy adults happy to waste resources rather than do a few simple chores themselves.

WinterInTheAutumn · 29/06/2024 12:43

I don’t hang out atm due to bird shit issues! 🤣

My fault, I love feeding them so during breeding season I use the dryer for some items and hang the rest on the rack inside. Dry in no time currently!

EBearhug · 29/06/2024 12:43

I only hang out washing when:

a) I have done some washing. As I live alone, this is not daily.
b) it's not raining.
c) I have cut back the honeysuckle enough that I can actually put the rotary washing line out.
d) I am not going out.

All 4 of these factors need to be true, and often they are not, especially the weather this year.

Expo23 · 29/06/2024 12:45

I don't hang mine out. I set it going when I get up then I drop it at my parents on the way to work and they peg it out and I collect it on the way back home. I find their garden less spidery. Also, my neighbour one side used to always come out to speak when they saw me pegging out, I could be held hostage for a good 30/40 minutes. My neighbour on the other side would send me texts commenting about how I had hung out my washing/not had it out/had it out early/and other things I have wiped from mind but made me uncomfortable.

BabyFedUp445 · 29/06/2024 12:45

I hang mine inside.

maw1681 · 29/06/2024 12:46

Weird not to hang out, everyone does in my area! We live rurally so the clothes smell amazing when they come in and if it's breezy all the creases get blown out!
We do have a tumble dryer but only used if it's raining or finishing stuff off in winter.

Why use the tumble dryer when it is a lovely day, seems weird to me!

It takes two seconds to shove it from a washer into a dryer.

I can’t be arsed with the faffing of hanging up the washing. That is valuable time I can spend elsewhere.

Bcs people don't want to put a peg on 19865 baby socks and hang underwear outside.

Brawcolli · 29/06/2024 12:47

T1Dmama · 29/06/2024 12:24

I don’t hang out pants! Lol
everything else yes, but no pants or bras

Ha, if I’m hanging laundry it’s usually because I have bras that I can’t tumble dry.

c3pu · 29/06/2024 12:48

I dry mine in the conservatory, baking in there and it's dry in minutes!

AquaFurball · 29/06/2024 12:49

The only people who hang out washing around here are home all day, mostly retired. Most people don't have time to watch washing dry to bring it in immediately so it doesn't need ironed or in case it rains.

Not all disabilities are visible.

Some of us live too near the coast to constantly rewash birdshit off our washing as well as our cars, when we can't sit watching it dry.
