Washing and neighbours

To think it’s strange my neighbours never ever hang out their washing? Lovely day here but regardless they never hang their washing out?

I don’t hang outside as I am always out and about so risk it raining. We have a heated airer inside that we use all the time with occasional tumble dryer when urgent.

I have a heated airer but there's absolutely no way I'd turn it on in this weather!

Washing dries really quickly without it

Floralnomad · 29/06/2024 13:48

I only ever hang stuff out on days like today , so very warm otherwise it’s tumble or hang on my indoor drying rack . I will still tumble the towels , pants and pyjamas today as my family prefer them soft . I have no interest in what my neighbours do .

LittleRedYarny · 29/06/2024 13:49

Maybe it’s hayfever/allergies, or a disability that makes it difficult (physical or mental), or they use a washing service, or they’re naturists and don’t wear clothes, or they only wear clothes once and throw them away or they have tiny woodland creatures who do it and gently blow on it to dry it…

GasPanic · 29/06/2024 13:51

This is almost certainly because they are not washing their clothes.

Wearing the same clothes over and over again until they become stiff like boards and they cannot move. Then they change them for new ones.

Or alternatively there is a small probability they are tumble drying, or just hanging their washing on the bannisters/radiators to dry.

PassingStranger · 29/06/2024 13:52

Love it on the line.
I love it when it's hot and you can get several loads out in one day and all dry.

Have a tumble dryer but never use.

BuyOrBake · 29/06/2024 12:52

I agree.

To me the default way to dry is our on the line.
I hate having to spend £ on using the dryer

Me too, so expensive! Plus line dried washing smells amazing, line dried sheets mmm ! And no, I don’t iron them.
I don’t understand not doing it , barring specific reasons eg pollen, but each to his own

YABU. We never hang washing out. We tumble dry everything.

Think of the planet 😒

Why use the tumble dryer when it is a lovely day, seems weird to me!

I am disabled and have limited energy. The tumble drier is much easier to use.

Createausername1970 · 29/06/2024 13:57

I can't see over my fence so no idea what my neighbours do.

Most of my washing gets hung out in good weather. In fact I washed a lot of heavier coats, hoodies etc last week, as well as every last bit of dog bedding, mattress protectors, cushion covers, Christmas cushion covers, Christmas table cloths that might not have been washed before DH "kindly" folded them and put them away. Anything that could be washed was washed and hung out to dry.

But not anything my son would wear as he is really struggling with hayfever this year, worse than usual, so his went on an airer in doors.

Don't be silly, they don't have any clothes, they just wander round naked.

I thought no one would ever say it! I try so hard to minimise the resources I use and then I see so many people around me who just don't give a shit 🙁 Surely heating stuff up when you don't need to and churning all that hot air out in the middle of summer isn't a good thing?

MyOtherHusbandIsAWash · 29/06/2024 13:59

Another hayfever sufferer here. I can hang washing outside if the pollens are low but usually when it’s warm is when pollens are highest 🤷🏻‍♀️

PrincessofWells · 29/06/2024 14:03

There's no hope for the planet . . .

Cuppachino · 29/06/2024 14:05

TheShellBeach · 29/06/2024 12:18

We haven't even got a washing line.

DH took it down years ago because we don't hang washing out. It looks untidy and ends up needing to be ironed. No thanks.

We either hang washing up on the airer or tumble dry it.

HTH

It looks untidy? Have you got a love island style garden? Would it ruin the look of the hot tub?

This. The amount of posters saying that they would use the tumble dryer, instead of hanging out clothes is surprising. Unless due to disability, or lack of outside space, why on earth waste energy, and money.

Homesweethome23 · 29/06/2024 14:08

I never dry washing outside and also don’t have a tumble dryer. Each to their own.

Nevergoodenoughforthem · 29/06/2024 14:09

Allergies! My son has severe grass allergies so everything is tumbled or on heated rail. I’d prefer it be dried outside but we have no choice.

skyeisthelimit · 29/06/2024 14:10

There is no washing line in my garden and hasn't been for years. I tumble dry everything.

It's much easier as machines are side by side, it takes less time and is much easier for me as a single parent , working full time, with mobility issues.

I have no interest in how my neighbours dry their washing. I have to do what is right for me and my life.

mybeesarealive · 29/06/2024 14:12

I've never seen my neighbour put his car in his garage. It's very odd.

whyamonthis · 29/06/2024 13:44

Wow, never knew this would become controversial. Thanks to everyone who agrees, if possible, outdoor drying is best! Away to bring in the washing 😀

I find it really strange too. With the electricity prices too why not dry outside! And it smells so good.

chaostherapy · 29/06/2024 14:12

Hayfever!

katepilar · 29/06/2024 14:13

kiwipolish · 29/06/2024 13:44

What's the secret? I can only use mine for sheets and towels as it shrinks everything else? Would like to know for the winter.

I do like everything else going outside though - we only have a small patio and a clothes horse drying thing though so not big enough for superking bedding

I have always wondered that too. I came to the conclusion that either people only have stuff that doesnt shrink or they are so used to it they basically dont notice the shrinking. I find it har to believe when people say their tumblerdrier doesnt shrink stuff.

Dotjones · 29/06/2024 14:14

My guess would be they don't do it because they have the sort of neighbour who tracks whether they hang their washing out or not. Which would have to be every hour or so every day of the week. Perhaps they prefer a bit of privacy.

KreedKafer · 29/06/2024 14:15

Who the fuck notices whether their neighbours hang out washing or not?!

I have no room for a tumble dryer but if I did I would use it all year round. I doubt it would cost more than having to rewash due to the birds shitting all over it.
