Washing and neighbours

To think it’s strange my neighbours never ever hang out their washing? Lovely day here but regardless they never hang their washing out?

OP posts:
Upallnight2 · 30/06/2024 19:26

I use a tumble dryer regardless.. HTH

LyndaSnellsSniff · 30/06/2024 19:30

When we moved into our new house, our neighbours commented on the fact that we hang washing on the line. That never did and nor do the subsequent owners of that house.

They don't have a tumble dryer, they just use airers. I do think it's a bit odd.

Smam · 30/06/2024 19:31

This could be my next door neighbour writing this, I always tumble dry whatever the weather.

Threesacrow · 30/06/2024 19:50

Yes, it's weird. Why use electricity and a machine when the sun and air will dry it and remove those resistant stains? Why add smelly chemicals when it will smell perfect dried outside? I don't understand it either, but to each their own.

MonsteraMama · 30/06/2024 19:50

SallyWD · 30/06/2024 19:03

Yes but they're very expensive to run and bad for the environment! Why wouldn't you hang clothes outside on a sunny day? Clothes smell so much nicer when hung outside.

Oh good another one.

I do not own a tumble dryer.

OP asked why her neighbours might not hang their washing out. I provided the most likely explanation. I am not a tumble dryer advocate. I'm not trying to convince everyone to use tumble dryers. I have a washing line. I was literally pointing out that tumble dryers exist.

HTH.

I don't understand people who have an aversion to using electricity

Lilpop90 · 30/06/2024 19:56

Maybe they don't wash their clothes! ;)

Lilywc · 30/06/2024 19:58

So what? They must just like using a dryer

Noosnom · 30/06/2024 19:58

Why spend money on electricity when the weather does it better for free and without creases?

Because it's damaging to the environment and completely unnecessary when you have free wind and solar power in your garden.

Selfish.

Pigeonqueen · 30/06/2024 20:02

We never hang anything out because we feed a lot of birds in our garden and they’ll poop over everything. I wash and hang on an indoor airer and then tumble it for 10 mins the next day before folding up.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/06/2024 20:12

Obviously a cannabis farm.
It's the only answer.

MustBeGinOclock · 30/06/2024 21:02

I do like to see washing out on a nice day tbh.

It baffles me when it's baking hot out and some won't open a single window.

sevsal · 30/06/2024 21:05

It's a bit more complex though, given we all have different circumstances

StressedOutButProudMama · 30/06/2024 21:27

Er have you never heard of a drier or an inside airer. Even on a hot day here I'd rather mine go in drier because most hot days someone is gonna light a BBQ or garden fire.

So do you never go outdoors in pollen season? It must be really bad if you can’t hang washing out for 10 minutes.

My ds has severe hay fever, he won’t cut grass but otherwise he takes the meds and manages.

its not the hanging it out for 10 minutes, its the wearing of it coated in pollen.

Hillarious · 30/06/2024 21:59

Personally, I like washing dried outside and would make the same observation as the OP, but there’s a danger we’re sounding like Alan Bennett’s mother.

TaterTots68 · 30/06/2024 22:02

I rarely hang washing out because: 1) it will probably rain 2) I get hayfever 3) birds sometimes shit on it 4) I can't be arsed and it's easier to stick it in the dryer/on the airer

Absolutely nothing to do with you!

thecatsthecats · 30/06/2024 22:15

I am generally a slattern by MN washing frequency standards, but I use eco wash cycles, and only do one XL load every ten days or so, and use homemade eco detergent/vinegar conditioner etc.

So I think my tumble dryer use a reasonable compromise (I do dry things in the conservatory also usually, but the baby just pulls everything off at the moment).

whyamonthis · 29/06/2024 12:17

Why use the tumble dryer when it is a lovely day, seems weird to me!

Because it needs ironing.

EBearhug · 01/07/2024 01:14

It doesn't need ironing if you hang it well.

tammynutley · 01/07/2024 08:31

Daughter is frightened of spiders so she never hangs out. Our washing line has cobwebs and she has seen spiders on the clothes so she just tumbles or hangs out inside.

It’s not unnecessary at all. My time is far too valuable to piss about hanging washing.

JackGrealishsCalves · 01/07/2024 09:24

We get lots of pigeons in our garden, you can guarantee at least one item of clothing will get bird shit on it if I hang stuff out
