To think it’s strange my neighbours never ever hang out their washing? Lovely day here but regardless they never hang their washing out?

You may laugh, my neighbour always complains to our housing association and wouldn’t surprise us if they also complain to 101 when we hang out washing,

Tangled123 · 29/06/2024 14:59

Outside isn’t an option for us as it rains too much. I mostly use a clothes horse, or tumble dryer occasionally for stuff I need dry quickly or towels/bedding that are too awkward to hang up.

Tumble dried towels...so lovely and fluffy. When I was a child all our towels were like sandpaper.

Yes! I do not understand why people want or claim to prefer crunchy line dried towels. You will prise my tumble dryer from my cold dead hands.

sparkles79 · 29/06/2024 15:01

I've not had a clothes line up in the 4 years I've lived in my house, i tumble dry everything 🤷‍♀️

CoastalCalm · 29/06/2024 15:01

I very rarely hang mine out more convenient to tumble dry and I can afford the electricity bill plus ill health - got fed up of bringing it in and out when weather changes and invariably it ended up needing dried in dryer

Me too! They are an absolute boon

Towels, pants, socks in the tumbler. Bedding in the winter because it takes forever on the airer.

Everything else on the line where possible because the breeze batters out the creases and it always smells beautiful.

Aria999 · 29/06/2024 15:08

@kiwipolish put it on a low heat setting for a longer time.

Tbf some driers don't really let you control it very well. I had a washer drier that dried everything super hot if you put it on a combination cycle.

ohtowinthelottery · 29/06/2024 15:09

MIL has never hung washing on the line in the 35+ years that I've known her. She loves her garden too much to spoil it with a washing line.
NDN commented that when they moved in (5 years ago) previous owners had left them a washing line but that she wouldn't be needing it. I've seen the occasional thing on a hanger drying on a bracket outside but never a line of washing, even in the summer.
I, on the other hand, can't wait to peg my washing out. I hate having it drying over a maiden inside and I only ever tumble dry underwear, towels and bedding (in the winter) We're all too tall and long armed to risk tumble drying other clothes

AntiHop · 29/06/2024 15:10

I don't have a tumble dryer and I still don't dry outside. It's more effort. We've got a ceiling airer and I often don't put it away as soon as it's dry. Also our garden is small and the washing line cuts across it.

The secret is not to hang it out under trees 🙄

I don't. I have politely asked the birds flying from my roof to wherever they go to, not to crap on my washing but they don't seem to understand.

Noosnom · 29/06/2024 15:15

Yanbu. My skanky neighbours very rarely hang out washing either. I add it to the long list of reasons I can't stand them. We have tiny houses so they must either waste money on a tumble dryer or have damp laundry everywhere, even in summer.

The only thing they put out is endless empty alcohol bottles in the recycling.

You are living next to one of my DCs OP.
Our adult DC never hang washing out. They bring their washing round to ours and we launder and iron it for them. 😂

Love it.My parents would do the same if I could be that organised!

The last time I hung washing outside I was still living at home as a teenager and I remember putting my leg into my jeans and out popped a huge spider. Arachnophobic me developed a life long aversion to hanging washing outside on that day 😁

VivX · 29/06/2024 15:35

I never hang washing out because I just don't want to.

Poolstream · 29/06/2024 15:35

Scampuss · 29/06/2024 13:41

Washing takes longer than 10 minutes to dry. it's not the time taken to hang it out, it's that the pollen will attach to all the laundry. Not drying washing outside is basic hayfever management.

There are days I can't go outside, yes, and that's with all the meds etc.

I'm guessing your notion of severe hayfever is different to mine.

Edited

Yes, I think it is.
That must be awful.
I had to have a hay fever jab in the 80’s, I assume they don’t do them now.

I didn’t even think of the pollen clinging to the clothes.
Although in France the Aoûtats ( tiny bitey harvest mites) cling to clothes and so I always iron anything that’s been on the line in summer.

Lovely warm conservatory, clothes horse. Why traipse out to garden and fanny around with pegs when I can dry it in there? I hardly ever put my washing on the line, no need :)

Janehasamane · 29/06/2024 15:46

I’m always surprised on here how obsessed folks are with their neighbours,,,they don’t hang their washing out, they don’t open their windows, they are painting their house, they never leave, the kids don’t play in the garden

its now like curtain twitching on steroids, not only can you watch what they do, you can now post threads and discuss it,,

katepilar · 29/06/2024 15:49

chaostherapy · 29/06/2024 14:24

Yes, only those without hayfever would struggle to understand why we aren't drying our washing outside in summer and decide to judge/sneer/criticise us for it.

I have hayfever and it would never occure to me that it may be a problem.

NinaPersson · 29/06/2024 15:49

I hang washing out when I can and the only thing I ever iron is school uniforms

HTH.

Iliketulips · 29/06/2024 16:01

I can the neighbours at the back hang their washing out, but I'd have to crane my head out the back bedroom window to keep on eye what what either side does, and I'm really not interested.

I can hear Patricia Routledge as Kitty saying"I can honestly say that people today aren't pegging enough out".
