Washing and neighbours

To think it’s strange my neighbours never ever hang out their washing? Lovely day here but regardless they never hang their washing out?

OP posts:

I never dry clothes in my tumble dryer-it ruins them, fades the dark colours, shrinks stuff, etc as I did use them once or twice years ago. But then I don't wash my clothes after one wear unless they're stained. My currently worn jeans have been on a week, they might be washed in a machine in the winter, but mostly are handwashed in the summer and left to drip dry.

That's probably why my clothes always look in good condition and last years!

Better for the planet, better for my clothes, better for my pocket.

GingerPirate · 29/06/2024 14:20

We use the tumble dryer.
Apart from slaving in direct sunlight, the laundry looks better without bird shit.
Hope this helps.

Ponderingwindow · 29/06/2024 14:21

We can’t tolerate getting pollen on our clothing. We all take a ridiculous amount of allergy meds as it is.

PrincessofWells · 29/06/2024 14:21

Dontcallmescarface · 29/06/2024 14:18

I have no room for a tumble dryer but if I did I would use it all year round. I doubt it would cost more than having to rewash due to the birds shitting all over it.

The secret is not to hang it out under trees 🙄

Yes, only those without hayfever would struggle to understand why we aren't drying our washing outside in summer and decide to judge/sneer/criticise us for it.

Waffle78 · 29/06/2024 14:28

They might have allergies to pollen. I used to hang mine out but my DC developed allergies. So because pollen can get on your clothes the advice to allergy sufferers is not to hang washing out.

Yellowpingu · 29/06/2024 14:29

Maybe they’re naturists and have very little washing

It looks untidy? Have you got a love island style garden? Would it ruin the look of the hot tub?

Golly, no.
It's a tiny garden in our sheltered housing complex.
We have some plant pots and a little seat, that's all.

Isobel201 · 29/06/2024 14:33

I just use the tumble drier, but then I'm on my own and just do one wash a week, hardly costs anything. My back garden doesn't get the sun and at the moment is full of weeds that my dad is taking his time deciding what to do with them (its his house I'm paying rent to live in), so its not nice going out there tbh.

Tumble dryers exist. HTH.

Tumble dryers use electricity - CoL? Climate change?
Why not use free solar and wind power to dry washing when it's there.

I've had tumble dryers for 38 years.
Never once have my clothes been ruined or shrunk. I've no idea why people always claim that.

TheShellBeach · 29/06/2024 12:21

Why?
You just end up with a pile of ironing.

Neither of us likes ironing so we hang things up neatly inside.

Yes, we also tumble dry some stuff. This makes towels really soft and fluffy.

You're not line drying right. Basically nothing I line dry comes in with creases. It's so much easier than the airer.

Coatscoatscoast · 29/06/2024 14:38

we moved house sixth months ago and I’ve finally been able to extract the airers from the rammed packed shed which is lovely so I have sofa cushions hanging out today. We have a tumble drier but I often find hanging stuff out gives me a more visual cue of what is actually in the wash if that makes sense? Stuffing into the tumble means I don’t often notice if ALL the school shirts have gone through. That said I am fairly slack about sorting it beforehand.

I don't even own a tumble dryer don't come for my neck, I was literally just offering an explanation as to why the neighbours might not hang out their laundry.

Tumble dried towels...so lovely and fluffy. When I was a child all our towels were like sandpaper.

Non windy days the magpies and crows will sit on our line, depending on what we have on it. They like to stare in our window til we feed them.

I tumble dry in winter but always line dry when the weather allows and hadnt considered the pollen aspect of this. I'm not a hayfever sufferer but my DS is. I line dry and then iron. Should I avoid line drying his clothes to not impact his hay fever?

PadstowGirl · 29/06/2024 14:50

You are living next to one of my DCs OP.
Our adult DC never hang washing out. They bring their washing round to ours and we launder and iron it for them. 😂

FourNiltotheArsenal · 29/06/2024 14:51

I don't hang mine out as my washing line has been propping up my neighbour's sagging fence for the past 3 years. Also I have a lovely large laundry room with drying racks so everything goes up there to dry, and the neighbours therefore can't make judgemental comments on my clothes.

Subtle brag in there about your lovely large laundry room. Not like us peasants who have to make do with the outside space.

behindthemall · 29/06/2024 14:54

We have solar panels and a tumble dryer. It’s free, green and less effort to tumble dry instead of using the line.

I only really use the line if the tumble dryer already has a load in when the washing machine finishes.

YouJustDoYou · 29/06/2024 14:56

Hi pollen and bird area = contaminated laundry for us. Clothes horse over a dehumidifier.
