Washing and neighbours

To think it’s strange my neighbours never ever hang out their washing? Lovely day here but regardless they never hang their washing out?

I never hang my washing out for two reasons:

  1. I have horrible neighbours who would steal anything that isn't nailed down and have in the past broken into my back yard plus they are so loud, rude and their yard is such a tip that going outside makes me feel upset about what I have to live next door to
  2. I get very bad hay fever so as soon as pollen season starts aside for reason No 1, I can't hang it outside as washing traps tiny pollen particles and it would be allergy hell.
So as you can see, people have valid reasons for not hanging washing out, I wish I could but it just doesn't work for me.n
katepilar · 29/06/2024 13:33

I like to hang mine outside /under the roof/ and do find it weird when people dont but they might have millions of reasons why they dont. Some dont want to put the effort in, some dont see the difference, some like to use their tumbledryer, some have some kind of a billirubin issue that doesnt allow for it, some have special anxieties about it, etc.

Scampuss · 29/06/2024 12:16

Severe hayfever here, would much rather hang my washing out but I like being able to see and breathe.

So do you never go outdoors in pollen season? It must be really bad if you can’t hang washing out for 10 minutes.

My ds has severe hay fever, he won’t cut grass but otherwise he takes the meds and manages.

BetterCare · 29/06/2024 13:34

@AInightingale I have the woollen balls and put just a couple of drops on one of them. Been doing it for years and has not impacted my tumble dryer or anything I put in it other than make the items smell amazing.

I don’t hang out pants! Lol
everything else yes, but no pants or bras

I only like to hang out my matchy stuff (I have a fair bit) I like to imagine the neighbours think, "That woman at number 6 must really have her shit together." 🤣
I hang the rest inside on the line (it's a whirlygig one) so it's slightly hidden.
It's a bit mad I know, but it amuses me

How sad is your life.

maddiemookins16mum · 29/06/2024 13:36

I think it’s possibly a generational thing - I hang washing out if my decking is dry be that on the 29th June or 29th December. I can count on both hands the number of days we had to dry inside during last winter. I also obsessively check the met office weather app and plan accordingly.
Disclaimer: I am however in the SE.
Surely using a tumble dryer in the summer is literally burning money.
But hey, that’s just my humble opinion, doesn’t mean I’m right (or wrong).

katepilar · 29/06/2024 13:36

Btw I never understood why British houses dont have a roofed space /balkony, porch, whatever/ where washing could be safely dried.

Cantabulous · 29/06/2024 13:36

I dry my sheets and duvet covers outside on a rack if it’s really hot so they dry fast. I love the smell! But if it takes longer than a couple of hours I take them in as they get dirty in the air pollution. Hang everything else in the conservatory, while towels, socks and pants go in the tumble dryer.

i can send you a video OP if you’re interested?

Are you my NDN ? I assumed she didn't wear any.

Can't understand why not.

Why would you want to do something that makes a health condition worse when you have another option?

Mrsredlipstick · 29/06/2024 13:38

From April my husband hangs washing out. In fairness he does the laundry. We also have dry soon racks.
Yesterday I told him I could smell rain and he called me a country bumpkin. He is a bit frugal so it's free heat to him.

katepilar · 29/06/2024 13:39

Out of interest, why does washing dried outside need ironing and washing dried inside doesnt? I do both and see no difference ironingwise.

MardyBigBum · 29/06/2024 13:40

I put my washing out on the line whenever possible OP. I find a few minutes in the peace and quiet of the garden in the sunshine is good for the soul, even if I am only pegging out washing.

Aria999 · 29/06/2024 13:40

I don't hang mine out because (1) I am lazy and (2) I would have to wrestle it up a steep staircase filled with spiders with a hatch door at the top.

@Poolstream it isn't hung out for 10 minutes if you have to go to work. And why would you do something that makes your child's hayfever worse if you have other options.

Washing takes longer than 10 minutes to dry. it's not the time taken to hang it out, it's that the pollen will attach to all the laundry. Not drying washing outside is basic hayfever management.

There are days I can't go outside, yes, and that's with all the meds etc.

I'm guessing your notion of severe hayfever is different to mine.

Why use the tumble dryer when it is a lovely day, seems weird to me!

Because you have no idea what is going on in someone else’s house… I live outside of the UK and it doesn’t rain much but I still use a drier ( more than I would like to ) between work, SEN kids and trying to keep my head above water something had to give and much easier to throw in the drier …

Pull your head in and mind your own business … glad you are not my neighbour

Epidote · 29/06/2024 13:42

I got a problem in my arms that makes hanging the laundry a very painful task. The dryer in the other hand saves me the pain.
I would love to hang at least the bedding. I think they feel better when they dry with the sun. But I can't.

whyamonthis · 29/06/2024 13:44

Wow, never knew this would become controversial. Thanks to everyone who agrees, if possible, outdoor drying is best! Away to bring in the washing 😀

YABU. We never hang washing out. We tumble dry everything.

What's the secret? I can only use mine for sheets and towels as it shrinks everything else? Would like to know for the winter.

I do like everything else going outside though - we only have a small patio and a clothes horse drying thing though so not big enough for superking bedding

TammyJones · 29/06/2024 13:44

MonsteraMama · 29/06/2024 12:08

Tumble dryers exist. HTH.

Work full time
Run the house.
Have solor panels so straight in the tumble
Only 2 of us so on twice a week.
Dh's work stuff goes on the airer - which is in the conservatory (hot) in summer.

lanthanum · 29/06/2024 13:45

Ours goes on the landing banister or in the airing cupboard. Avoids getting it covered in pollen and pigeon shit. No tumble dryer.

Ihateslugs · 29/06/2024 13:45

Moier · 29/06/2024 12:08

I don't hang mine out.
My daughter will sometimes do it for my dresses after my hols.
But dresses l hang on hangers in spare bedroom on curtain pole with window open.
Everything else in tumbler.. but I'm disabled.

Snap, so am I! Sometimes I’m in a lot of pain in the morning, maybe not slept well, so it might be mid day before I’m able to do any washing and too late then to put it outside. Even on a sunny day, it’s easier for me to pop the washing in the dryer right next to the washing machine - sometimes I just cannot face the effort of going outside.
