Washing and neighbours

To think it’s strange my neighbours never ever hang out their washing? Lovely day here but regardless they never hang their washing out?

OP posts:
JurassicClark · 29/06/2024 13:12

I peg everything out that I can, my lazy-arsed family bung everything in the machine “because why make work for yourself?”

I do it because I love the smell of fresh line-dried washing, and I am fine about anything getting darked on or have spider willies rubbed across it.

They don’t because they don’t pay the electricity bill.

lol, I’m simply making an observation, just think it’s a bit strange. Thought everyone preferred outdoor dried if possible, with the exception of disabilities, hay fever, bird shit etc. 😀at the poster who said I need to get a hobby when they took the time to reply to this post.

If someone else was going to hang it out for me, stay in to make sure there's no rain, rush out to bring it in when it does rain and cart it up and down the garden steps then sure, I'd prefer it. But I'm not dicking about with pegs when I can use the tumble drier.

saveforthat · 29/06/2024 13:13

I'm with you OP. I hang everything out and never iron anything. One of my favourite things to do is to hang out bedclothes in the morning and make the bed with them fresh off the line, I need to get a life.

menopausalmare · 29/06/2024 13:14

Maybe she has really big pants and over -the -shoulder- boulder- holders.

whyamonthis · 29/06/2024 12:17

Why use the tumble dryer when it is a lovely day, seems weird to me!

This may come as a shock to you OP so brace yourself....

Some people like to do things a different way to other people, and that's OK.

BetterCare · 29/06/2024 13:15

I think hanging the washing out is the work of the devil I can not stand doing it. It one of those chores that people say only takes five minutes and it does not. You are then constantly on weather watch. Also, I think I may be one of the only people who can't stand the smell of washing when it has been outside.

I would far rather use a tumble dryer and put a drop of essential oil in the dryer the smell on the washing lasts for ages.

johnd2 · 29/06/2024 13:16

They probably have hayfever, it's recommended not to hang out your clothes if you suffer badly as it just covers them in pollen!
Or any other of a zillion reasons that are totally up to them

Roundtoedshoes · 29/06/2024 13:17

I agree OP! Not spying, but I have to walk by my neighbours gate and was so pleased to see they had put up a washing line (they moved in when it was cooler). The people before never did and I found it baffling - free sunshine and wind! I do understand the hay fever point though - I suffer but still line dry. It’s the best! Oh, and we never iron and my washing has not been shat on (yet!)

SapphireSeptember · 29/06/2024 13:18

I don't dry washing outside, becoming of hayfever. Wish I could because it smells nicer!

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 29/06/2024 13:19

I used to hang my clothes out starting with whites, then going through the colours of the rainbow in order and ending with black.

That was when the children were at school. They've all left now so I have to make do with reduced colours.

I have been known to go through drawers looking for a certain colour because my rainbow wouldn't have been complete.

My neighbour once said that she could see what I was doing and she winked.

I love to see washing hung out.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/06/2024 13:21

I'm another one with you OP, I don't even HAVE a tumble drier. Everything goes on the line, nothing is ironed, it comes in when it's dry so if it gets rained on it stays out a bit longer. Tumble driers are too expensive for me to run and I don't have space for one anyway, so it's the washing line for me all the way.

IncompleteSenten · 29/06/2024 13:21

What's strange is noticing.
Maybe I am just staggeringly unobservant but I genuinely have no clue about any of my neighbours clothes washing habits.

betterangels · 29/06/2024 13:22

We're not allowed, and even if we were I couldn't do it. Wheelchair and washing lines don't mix well in my experience.

Willmafrockfit · 29/06/2024 13:22

this is one of the reasons i NEED to have a garden,

Hayliebells · 29/06/2024 13:23

I guess people are worried about accidentally leaving it out overnight, what with the spiders and danger of it being darked on.

Willmafrockfit · 29/06/2024 13:23

although i did take offence years ago as my neighbours, opposite, over the road in fact, said to me, they knew it was going to be a nice day if i had my washing out
i dont know why i took offence really

Have actually wondered this for a while about my own neighbours!

Princessbananahamock · 29/06/2024 13:24

They are afraid of getting Spider willies on the washing!

Damn, you beat me to it.

AInightingale · 29/06/2024 13:25

Are you meant to put essential oils in tumble driers? I had always been led to believe that was a bit dodgy - fire hazard? Maybe not.

Wawaweewah · 29/06/2024 13:25

It's faster and easier for me to just use an airer in the utility room next to the washing machine, and I also use the tumble dryer for some things. It wouldn't all fit on my small line and I can't be bothered to carry the airer through the house to the garden all the time. I have a newborn and a toddler so it's easier to do it quickly where I can see them. And also because I'm an adult and I can do my laundry however I want.

NextFriYAY · 29/06/2024 13:25

Mine is out on 2 airers hidden at the side of the house - means I can whip the entire lot in easily if it rains but still get the benefits of outdoor drying. You’d not be able to see them if you looked into my garden.

Am bemused at the idea of outdoor or indoor drying not requiring ironing. I iron everything bar underwear or pjs regardless of how they’ve been dried.

MargaretThursday · 29/06/2024 13:25

If mine are looking they're probably wondering what on earth my washing is about.
This week I had a white load, a yellow load, a blue load, a pink load and a turquoise load.
I have a red, green and purple load to go.

It's costumes from a local show.

Anewuser · 29/06/2024 13:27

You’re getting a hard time on here @whyamonthis

however, I’m with you that I’m surprised a lot of people don’t hang their washing out.

Where I live, we can easily see each other’s gardens and most don’t use it for their washing. I know they don’t have mobility issues and don’t believe they all suffer with severe hay fever.

Obviously, it’s their choice, but I suspect most just find it more convenient to use a tumble dryer.

Potentialmadcatlady · 29/06/2024 13:29

Maybe they don’t want spiders rubbing their willies on their clean washing
