To wonder when the excess of dogs will die down

There's so much shit everywhere

There are so many feral horrible dogs pissing on front doors or prams or shop displays and barking terrifyingly at kids

I am sick of them!!!!! Is this it or will people learn their post COVID lesson and only get pets they can actually handle in the future?

They bring a lot of pleasure to people in this hard life.

Exactly this

paasll · 28/06/2024 22:15

I think that the dogs are not the problem. It's their humans. And this is symptomatic of bigger problems in society.

You don't pick up your dog shit = you don't give a shit about anyone else in society and you don't follow the rules/byelaws/whatever.

Dogs are extremely good for mental health. Mine is sleeping at my feet.

TeenLifeMum · 28/06/2024 22:15

There’s less poop on pavements than when I was a child. I also only see fairly well behaved dogs here. My neighbour will disagree as he’s adamant my dog is pooping on his door mat but as he doesn’t go out the front without me I can say with 100% certainty it’s not my dog. It’s a tiny cul de sac when a number of dogs but all nice people. I think it’s more likely a fox.

I love dogs and think they are good for humanity. I feel suspicious of people who don't love them.

I also loathe dog owners who don't clear up after them, train them etc. but they are in the minority.

In Spain I've seen owners wash the piss off walls but here owners just leave it as though we're all supposed to accept the inevitability of dog piss everywhere. It's madness.

No.
Time and time again on MN, responsible dog owners are tarred with the same brush as the irresponsible ones... and even when we plead our case about our well trained dogs, picking up poo, making sure our dogs don't approach strangers etc... we then get beat over the head with "well, dogs are bad for the planet" bollocks.
It is ridiculous.

This. ^ And I am so sorry your lovely doggo is living on borrowed time @XenoBitch Flowers

This.

I love dogs, am a dog owner, and can also be pissed off at other dog owners.
That is not a dog issue, it is an owner issue.

I think dogs and their owners are like cyclists... you only notice the bad ones.

flowertoday · 28/06/2024 22:17

The dogs and owners where I live are very nice. People pick up dog mess and keep their dogs on leads unless it is safe and appropriate to let them off.
It's not a dog problem, it's a human problem. Sounds like you have reached peak human down your way.

Sounds like a rough area. Nothing like that here.

This 👆I haven’t stepped in dog shit for decades. You must live in an area that is rough !!

I bloody love my poodle cross ❤️❤️

ShouldhavebeencalledAppollo · 28/06/2024 22:20

I don’t think anytime soon. But that’s not what needs to change. It’s people being irresponsible that needs to change. Any government struggle to do much and I don’t think it’s a priority.

When it comes to behaviour I am seeing the tide turning. Even a year ago people would post videos of badly behaved dogs and they would be met with people thinking it’s hilarious. But lately I see more people challenging people whose dogs are out of control. On walks people are far more less tolerant of dogs rushing other dogs, less tolerant of people with off lead dogs that won’t recall, less tolerant of aggressive dogs with owners that either can’t or won’t control them. More people seem to challenge irresponsible owners. Maybe eventually that will make a lot of people change their ways. When it becomes completely socially unacceptable.

i think I am quite lucky here. There’s a huge field that lots of people walk their dog on and in 5 years I have seen dog poo twice.

I rarely see dogs in shops or restaurants or cafes. If there are dogs they are usually in places that have outdoor tables where it’s made clear dogs are welcomed but it’s not most cafes or restaurants. Just a few. And they do well out of it. And no one seems to have dogs that bark at other dogs or try and approach other dogs. They just sit there and have a nap.

I work in London and am always shocked by the amount of people who have dogs in a city, there’s not as many in my local city. But I don’t seem to see a lot of dog poo. Can’t recall seeing any to be honest. And they are all on lead and seem well behaved.

Dragonsandcats · 28/06/2024 22:20

@XenoBitch I’m so sorry. It’s heartbreaking to lose a pet.

Sad, my dog is elderly and

Droppit · 28/06/2024 22:20

I honestly don't know how people can afford the extra expense of having a dog, especially at the moment.

It doesn’t matter how responsible the owners are, there’s still dog piss literally everywhere now. I went for a walk the other day and the sun had heated up all the piss so it stank 🤢 I think we should have dog parks where people are allowed to walk their dogs, and ban them from public areas!

tulippa · 28/06/2024 22:21

I've had to take a few long train journeys over the past couple of weeks and there were loads of dogs on them. Since when did dogs on trains start being a thing?
Only one was sitting on the floor. The others were perched on the seats like they had their own ticket. Not sure how I feel about that.

Ispywithmylittlepie · 28/06/2024 22:22

I don't own a dog but I really like them. I'm always walking or running in the park and love seeing the dogs, it really lifts me. I haven't come across any badly behaved dogs ever, guess I'm lucky.
Sorry Xeno, that is crap to hear.

So how do you expect people to clear up dog piss whilst out walking? Dog shit is different and in our area people carry poo bags and do the right thing.

orangeleopard · 28/06/2024 22:23

I live in a small block of flats and instead of people not getting pets that they can’t care for in certain accommodation - they allow it to affect everyone them. One of my upstairs neighbours has a large dog and cannot be bothered to walk it, so they walk it a few steps outside the back door (essentially the main door that leads to the carpark) and allows the dog to wee. It’s full blown summer and I cannot even leave my own home without smelling the awful smell of hot dog urine when leaving the building.

I’m vegan and all round an animal lover - but even I can say that dogs in today’s age are out of control - and I would say it’s down to entitled owners.

Buildingthefuture · 28/06/2024 22:23

@ThursdayTomorrow I don’t buy my dogs, I adopt them after they’ve been let down by shit humans. And no, they don’t shit on the pavement. Frankly, I have too many to pavement walk 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ They shit on my own land and bother no one.

XenoBitch · 28/06/2024 22:24

How sad someone reported my post.
My dog is on borrowed time.
So this thread is like being grateful there will be one less dog about.
It is going to absolutely devastate me. Will you be there for me then? No. Just gloating about all the "awful" dogs and their owners.

In Spain they carry bottles of water... But this is why there are too many dogs. Their piss and diarrhea just gets left. The only solution is fewer dogs and it is not reasonable to expect non dog owners not to be revolted by these things.

Also owners should yank dogs away from pissing on private property but they don't. I've been out with a friend when the dog pissed on her pram (with her baby in it). Owner wasn't even sorry.

You can't stop dogs peeing. When they need to go, they need to go. They also do small scenting pees as a message to other dogs. Totally normal dog behaviour.
