Raffle prize win - what would you do

Writing this without saying which side I am, would be interested in knowing who you think is 'right'.

Jill won a raffle prize of a cut and blow dry at a new salon owned by Mary. When Jill attended to claim her prize she also booked in for a root tint, which she expected to pay for.

During their session Mary mentioned business was not so good and she thought it partly due to her website content. Jill told her that her business was website marketing and offered to take a look at Mary's website, which she did. Jill made a lot of suggestions, she rewrote some of the content and suggested mary implement an online booking facility. Mary was very happy with the changes and as a thank you waived the cost of the colour.

About a month later, Mary contacted Jill and asked her to set up the online booking system, Jill was agreeable to take this on and explained her fees. Mary was taken aback at being asked to pay as felt as she had waived the cost of the hair dye treatment, that should cover the cost of the website work.

What do you think? Should Jill charge for this extra work? If yes, would it be ok for Mary to ask Jill to now pay for the colour treatment she had?

FunLurker · 27/06/2024 12:32

Jill should charge for the work and Mary shouldn't ask for the tint money. If Mary asks for tint money I'd be inclined to charge for the advice.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 27/06/2024 12:32

Depends...how much was the colour treatment and when you say "re-wrote some copy"...how much are we talking?

And how much work would the booking system be for Jill to do?

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 27/06/2024 12:32

Mary is a CF. Jill had already spent time and expertise in return for the colour. One free hair dye does NOT buy indefinite IT support!

Whataweirdsituation · 27/06/2024 12:33

Jill should absolutely charge for further work. Mary is being a CF. As PP said, if Mary does try and charge, Jill can ask for payment for the advice she gave!

Surprisedcupcake · 27/06/2024 12:34

I think Jill already helped Mary, thus Mary waiving the root tint fee?
Jill should charge for the extra work I think as it's a new situation.

ChessieFL · 27/06/2024 12:43

How much work did Jill put in originally and how does that compare to the cost of the colour?

It sounds like Mary is being a bit cheeky expecting further work free, but it does depend a bit how much Jill did the first time.

Arlanymor · 27/06/2024 12:44

The quid pro quo was the tint = website revamp.

To do any further work on the website takes things beyond the original agreement. If Mary is so baffled by this she should shop around and see what other web designers charge. I work in communications and it is not unusual for people to assume that web stuff is ‘easy’ and ‘only takes a minute’…

ihaircut101 · 27/06/2024 12:50

Thanks for replies so far. Just to add Mary did also provide the cut and blow dry free (raffle prize) as well as the tint.

YellowHairband · 27/06/2024 12:55

If Mary had decided not to go ahead with any further changes, would she have then asked for money for the tint? No, because she'd already accepted that the free hairdressing work was done in exchange for the free website work.

You cant agree that ("I'll do it for free in exchange for your website work") and then decide to add on other things the other person owes you.

Mary didn't provide the cut and blow dry free to Jill. Mary donated a prize for a raffle which Jill happened to win. The raffle organisers were the ones who got the cut and blow dry for free. If it wasn't Jill (who presumably bought a ticket), someone else would have availed of the prize.

It sounds to me that Mary does not appreciate the service that Jill has already provided free of charge. I suspect the consultation Jill provided would have been a lot more expensive than a colour. I would consider not charging for the colour to be a token of appreciation rather than actually covering the cost of the service provided by Jill.

But the raffle prize isn’t part of the equation to be fair, it’s outside the quid pro quo.

purplecorkheart · 27/06/2024 12:57

Jill should certainly charge for the online booking system. The advice Mary got while doing the cut, tint and blowdry for free more than covers the tint. Mary chose to donate her services to the raffle so the cut and blowdry is irrelevant really.

To be honest Mary is showing that she is not a great business person if she thinks that Jill would offer ongoing free advice and service because of a one off hair tint.

TheTripThatWasnt · 27/06/2024 12:57

You must be Jill, because otherwise you wouldn't be asking! And you must be fairly sure that you're going to get (almost) 100% agreement that you're in the right.

@YellowHairband sums it up perfectly.

This 100%

Vespanest · 27/06/2024 13:01

I cannot understand how anyone could think that Mary was correct. I’m sure if Jill had of known the free tint was not just for the help she provided on the day but also future help, she’d of kept her mouth shut and paid for the tint.

BlunderMifflin · 27/06/2024 13:04

I think Jill is in the right, Mary is in the wrong. And I think you might be Mary 🤔

I think so too, especially after the ‘reminder’ post about the raffle prize.

This.
Mary is being a CF.
She got great professional help that likely would have cost considerably more than a tint!

BobandRobertaSmith · 27/06/2024 13:11

How much work did Jill actually do on the website? Was it a couple of edits and/or verbal suggestions while she was sitting in the chair at the hairdressers or did she spend hours working on it? I can see how Mary might have misunderstood that Jill was offering to add the online booking system too when she waived the charge for the root tint as it was discussed along with the other changes.

How much work is adding the booking system actually going to be? Is Jill creating a bespoke solution or just signing Mary up to a third party provider? How much would the work cost compared to the root tint? How long has Jill spent on the website compared to how long Mary spent on the root tint?

StaySpicy · 27/06/2024 13:14

If Mary had not requested more help, then she'd have been happy with the free tint = free Web help/copy writing from Jill.

That means any further work by Jill needs to be paid.

I think the OP is Mary, too, with that "reminder" post. The original raffle prize can't be considered because that was already given away by Mary and could have been won by anyone.

Mary/OP is being a right CF to expect more free help!!

Roryhon · 27/06/2024 13:15

Jill probably needs to tell Mary that her work on the website last time was in return for the tint, and otherwise would have cost £x if she had charged. Say she was happy to do that, but going forward any additional work done would need to be paid for. Say that she hopes Mary understands that Jill’s business needs to make money to stay afloat too..

Vespanest · 27/06/2024 13:16

I made a balls up of my post and left it too late to edit, missing out an important “not”

JurassicClark · 27/06/2024 13:18

Mary is in the wrong. And she’s a right cheeky madam.

Jill’s cut and blow dry was covered by the raffle prize. Jill’s tint was covered by the website help.

Anything else Mary wants from Jill should be paid at Jill’s professional rates. Similarly, any further hair treatments are things Jill needs to pay Mary for.

ItsNotInMyMind · 27/06/2024 13:28

Mary has it wrong and I think OP is Mary too.

Thecatistheboss · 27/06/2024 13:31

If Mary is you op, which I think you are. Your the cheeky fucker here
