Raffle prize win - what would you do

ihaircut101 · 27/06/2024 12:30

Writing this without saying which side I am, would be interested in knowing who you think is 'right'.

Jill won a raffle prize of a cut and blow dry at a new salon owned by Mary. When Jill attended to claim her prize she also booked in for a root tint, which she expected to pay for.

During their session Mary mentioned business was not so good and she thought it partly due to her website content. Jill told her that her business was website marketing and offered to take a look at Mary's website, which she did. Jill made a lot of suggestions, she rewrote some of the content and suggested mary implement an online booking facility. Mary was very happy with the changes and as a thank you waived the cost of the colour.

About a month later, Mary contacted Jill and asked her to set up the online booking system, Jill was agreeable to take this on and explained her fees. Mary was taken aback at being asked to pay as felt as she had waived the cost of the hair dye treatment, that should cover the cost of the website work.

What do you think? Should Jill charge for this extra work? If yes, would it be ok for Mary to ask Jill to now pay for the colour treatment she had?

And Mary will be lucky to keep any clients or hired staff in future if this is the way she operates. If she considers a raffle prize as an IOU for the ‘winner’ giving an obligation to help her out, she clearly has no understanding of charity, either.

Change2banon · 27/06/2024 15:02

Mary is a cf!

Mary donated a raffle prize - her own choice to do so.

Jill won the raffle prize and claimed it. Jill ‘paid’ for her tint by doing some work for Mary. Thats it. They’re even.

OP/Mary, you’re even, move on.

Thanks for replies so far. Just to add Mary did also provide the cut and blow dry free (raffle prize) as well as the tint.

Ah so you are Mary. No that's not correct. Jill paid for a ticket. No wonder your salon is failing 🤦🏼‍♀️ you should be apologising to Jill. I'm embarrassed for you.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/06/2024 15:03

What did Mary think would happen? Does she need someone to explain to her what it means when you GIVE AWAY something, anything?

Did she think she would find a way to sneakily charge for the price?

Actually I've known "donors" like this who expect to recoup what they've given another way, and being so obvious it doesn't tend to work very well

As a PP said there's also the issue that JIll will tell those she knows about this, which unless they're stalwart customers of Mary might cost her even more work - perhaps another reason to drop it, though it may already be too late

Zoflorabore · 27/06/2024 15:05

I initially thought op was Jill but after seeing her username is icuthair101 it’s obvious that op is Mary!

surely all of the advice given by so many posters all saying variations of the same thing must make you realise you’re in the wrong here op? It’s ok to admit you were wrong, we’re all human.

Jill isn’t a charity and needs to charge for her time. I assume it will take several hours to do the work.

good luck with your new venture!

Regardless of raffle prize, Jill still got a hair dye, cut and bow dry for no charge.

Mary feels that Jill got the better of the deal and setting up the booking system would make them more even. It's not as if Jill had to start from scratch, as Mary had already paid someone to set up the initial website.

The cut and blow dry is irrelevant imo as anyone (who may not have been in a position to help Mary) could have won.

It sounds like Jill provided a lot of guidance/support re the website already and that is covered by the "free" colour. The inverted commas are because it wasn't free, it was payment for a service Jill provided.

Actually installing the booking system on the website is a further service which Jill should absolutely be paid for. Mary would be paying any other supplier for it. And if she won't pay, she shouldn't be upset when Jill refuses.

Or Mary needs to work out how to do it herself.

madameparis · 27/06/2024 15:06

Mary I’m embarrassed for you.

Go get a quote from three different web developers for an online booking system. And then let’s see if you still think Jill should do it for you for the cost of one root tint.

Clue : You probably need to offer Jill 10 free root tints for what you are asking from her.

Cut and blow dry was nothing to do with it, it was a raffle prize that was already donated, its completely irrelevant to the argument.

Crumpleton · 27/06/2024 15:07

Unless a regular customer there's every chance Jill wouldn't have even been in your salon so the "regardless of raffle prize" comment is a bit of odd comment to come out with.

It all started the second Jill paid for and won the prize connected to a raffle ticket.

horseyhorsey17 · 27/06/2024 15:08

Mary is being a CF. A hair tint, even a cut and blow dry (which she didn't give Jill for free anyway as that was a raffle prize), doesn't come close to covering the fee of website design, consultancy and set-up.

pigsDOfly · 27/06/2024 15:08

Lakeyloo · 27/06/2024 14:59

Agree with others... the raffle prize is irrelevant. It was donated to the cause, not to Jill. Jill was just lucky enough to win it, and it would have cost her something as she bought the tickets. The free tint for the free consultancy advice is fair. Anything else from either side should now be paid for.

Agree with the above.

How much work is Mary expecting to get on the back of the free tint she gave Jill in exchange for Jill's expertise?

Jill didn't ask for the free tint. If Mary feels unhappy that she gave Jill a free tint for the advice, something no one else would have given her for nothing, she should have charged for the tint.

Jill was perfectly prepared to pay for the tint in addition to giving the free advice. Mary can't stamp her foot now and demand more.

Mary's being a CF.

Well Jill won the raffle so she would have got the cut and blow dry anyway. The tint is extra that she got for helping Mary. How much does a tint normally cost? IT work of setting up a booking system I am sure costs a hell of a lot more. Mary is being a CF.

CelesteCunningham · 27/06/2024 15:08

Jill should run for the hills.

bluebeck · 27/06/2024 15:08

Mary is a proper CF.

LittleLittleRex · 27/06/2024 15:09

If Jill only gave advice during the time she was sitting having her hair done anyway, then she can hardly claim to have been put out in any way.

Mary is not a CF, she donated a prize already, the whole conversation took place during time she would normally expect to be paid and Jill had scheduled as down time, so Jill lost nothing at all to a few hours of Mary's time.

Jill isn't obligated but has got a much better deal so far.

scrapsontheside · 27/06/2024 15:09

Mary chose to offer the haircut , as a raffle prize anyone could have won that
Jill expected to pay extra , Mary chose to give the tint for free in exchange for help/advice
Anything else is separate and Mary is cheeky in expecting more free advice.

Bobbybobbins · 27/06/2024 15:11

The raffle prize is irrelevant here.

Mary is being a CF.

Interested to know how you are involved in this scenario OP?

TheDarkMonarch · 27/06/2024 15:11

If Jill only gave advice during the time she was sitting having her hair done anyway, then she can hardly claim to have been put out in any way.

It sounds more like Jill went away and did the work:

"Jill told her that her business was website marketing and offered to take a look at Mary's website, which she did. Jill made a lot of suggestions, she rewrote some of the content and suggested mary implement an online booking facility."

Taking a look at the website is hard while having your hair cut/on a phone and rewriting some of the content defo sounds to me like something she did later on her own time.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 27/06/2024 15:12

Mary is taking the piss and has no concept of what IT professionals charge.

Rocketpants50 · 27/06/2024 15:13

Surely Mary was happy with what Jill had provided her at the time hence giving her a free tint. Mary then was happy with her work on the website to engage her further to provide a booking system. Mary should have been clever here and said do you fancy another exchange of services for the booking system or just pay for what she wants.

How so?

She got a free tint in exchange for advice and some rewriting of the website.

"Jill made a lot of suggestions, she rewrote some of the content and suggested mary implement an online booking facility. Mary was very happy with the changes and as a thank you waived the cost of the colour."

The raffle prize is irrelevant. It was a prize and can't be added in afterwards and something demanded for it! That's not how prizes work.

FOJN · 27/06/2024 15:14

Jill should refuse to do any work, paid or otherwise, for Mary because Mary seems like a cheeky fucker pain in the arse.

Mary provides cut and blow dry as raffle prize, Jill buys the winnings ticket. Jill owes Mary nothing.

Jill books an additional service, expecting to pay, Mary provides the service foc in return for free website advice. Jill owes Mary nothing.

Mary contacts Jill for additional website work, they are square at this time so Mary should pay.

skyfalldown · 27/06/2024 15:17

I get the impression that Mary doesn't understand the cost of a freelance web designer. Even if Jill did waive the fee, she'd be getting a very bad deal as consultancy, copywriting and feature implentation cost a hell of a lot more than even the combined cost of a cut, blowdry and root tint
