Raffle prize win - what would you do

Writing this without saying which side I am, would be interested in knowing who you think is 'right'.

Jill won a raffle prize of a cut and blow dry at a new salon owned by Mary. When Jill attended to claim her prize she also booked in for a root tint, which she expected to pay for.

During their session Mary mentioned business was not so good and she thought it partly due to her website content. Jill told her that her business was website marketing and offered to take a look at Mary's website, which she did. Jill made a lot of suggestions, she rewrote some of the content and suggested mary implement an online booking facility. Mary was very happy with the changes and as a thank you waived the cost of the colour.

About a month later, Mary contacted Jill and asked her to set up the online booking system, Jill was agreeable to take this on and explained her fees. Mary was taken aback at being asked to pay as felt as she had waived the cost of the hair dye treatment, that should cover the cost of the website work.

What do you think? Should Jill charge for this extra work? If yes, would it be ok for Mary to ask Jill to now pay for the colour treatment she had?

You must be Jill, because otherwise you wouldn't be asking! And you must be fairly sure that you're going to get (almost) 100% agreement that you're in the right.

@YellowHairband sums it up perfectly.

The user name suggests the OP is Mary 😂

Welshmonster · 01/07/2024 11:56

Would Mary cut hair for free - no.

The subsequent posts make it clear she isn't 😂

BarrioQueen · 01/07/2024 12:06

This is not about the raffle prize. Free advice was given and a colour received . If one person continues to do free website work then there will be a never ending stream of requests. Keep to your boundaries. In future think twice about offering free advice, as no good deed goes unpunished.

Hedgeoffressian · 01/07/2024 12:40

Mary is being a CF. Jill should absolutely bill her for the work. Doing 1 free root tint shouldn’t mean that poor Jill is be at Mary’s beck and call for any future website work she needs doing.

taylorswift1989 · 01/07/2024 12:43

I would withdraw any offer to help - tell her you've got too much on right now. Even if she agrees to pay, you've seen what sort of client she'll be.

Justanothermum42 · 01/07/2024 12:50

Mary is being super cheeky! She gave a root tint (costing roughly £60) in exchange for advice. Now any extra work would be chargeable. No to Mary retrospectively charging for the tiny. Yes to Jill to only charge for her time etc after Mary contacted her again.

Imisssleep2 · 01/07/2024 14:58

I think the previous amendments and time taken to have a look etc was in exchange for the cost of the colour. The implementing of a booking system is separate and should be charged for, it may be a lengthy thing, I have no idea of it is or not.

Goodtogossip · 01/07/2024 15:02

Jill should charge for any future work. Mary waivered the cost of the dye as a thank you for the previous advise & support. It's now a separate work request she's asked of Jill therefore she should be prepared to pay for it. Unless she waivers the cost of all Jill's future appointments to offset the cost of the work she's asking Jill to do.

Delphiniumandlupins · 01/07/2024 15:15

If you want to stay friends with Mary then perhaps you set up the booking system for free but I don't know how long that would take and what you would normally charge. Perhaps you can have a discussion about how outsiders frequently undervalue professional services, including hairdressing and IT. The haircut and blow-dry wasn't really 'free' to Jill as she bought the raffle ticket, all the advice Mary has received was free.

Phoenixfire1988 · 01/07/2024 15:50

Jill is right Mary is a cheeky fuck and I think OP is Mary why else mention the cut and blow dry was free too which Jill had won so is completely irrelevant!!
The tint was free as Jill provided her services to help make the website better for free any further services Mary needs to pay for end of story

Beexxxx · 01/07/2024 16:06

😂 your replies made me sure you were Mary. Look. The only way this is going to work out is if you have a continuous tit for tat relationship. I doubt either of you want to end up constantly thinking the other got the better deal. Especially when this started as a cut you won. Not free. You won the cut, the point in Mary giving the cut away in the raffle was to snag a new regular customer so don’t get tricked into thinking she’s some saint for that. You gave her advice that I’m assuming she would have either had to pay for or just continued to struggle without. Do you think that you would have charged the price of the touch up for that? She could even see it as a business expense if she’s really struggling with it but it’s on her. She shouldn’t have offered to give her service in exchange for yours if she wasn’t happy with that.

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 27/06/2024 12:32

Mary is a CF. Jill had already spent time and expertise in return for the colour. One free hair dye does NOT buy indefinite IT support!

Yeah absolutely agreed! Mary waved the tint because Jill had already done some work! She’s then asked Jill to do more work so Jill should charge, or at least say your next however many appts are FOC in return?!

yaddayaddayah · 01/07/2024 16:37

ihaircut101 · 28/06/2024 08:44

For those asking about Mary's actual words she did say that she was very disappointed I was suggesting she pay, as I did get a totally free hair do. She wasn't angry or shouting (which is why I used the word 'miffed'). But it was clear she didn't think she should pay.

Just to add a bit of background, I previously worked for a company where I felt very undervalued and that work I did on projects was not recognised (others took credit) so decided to set up on my own so that I could have autonomy and know my work would be valued. So this is why I feel a bit torn with Mary. I was just wondering if I was being unreasonable given my past experience ?

But thank you all for your replies. I agree I must put boundaries (and clear pricing structure) in place and be more business like.

Mary chose to provide the raffle gift, that’s her choice and her problem?! She got you doing some work in the first place and gave you the tint free in return. You’d have paid for the tint had you not done any work for her. Maybe you’d have rebooked?
She wants you to do more work though - that’s your time and money (because you could be working elsewhere, earning!) so she pays you or she goes to someone else who, surprise surprise, will charge her!!
she is v cheeky!

CKL987 · 01/07/2024 17:22

I imagine she doesn't understand how much work you would have to put in to make the changes and that it is much more than the cost of a haircut.

Clearly you are Jill.

I'm assuming that Jill didnt do lots of work on Marys website - due to the fact that she didnt charge for the colour/tint - am i right in assuming it was whilst you were sitting in the salon or did you go away, do some copy and website work for her and then she refunded you.

If you left the salon without paying for your colour then i think you are in the wrong. I would have absolutely insisted on paying for the work that was extra to a 'raffle prize'

withlovefromlou · 01/07/2024 17:37

ihaircut101 · 27/06/2024 14:27

Regardless of raffle prize, Jill still got a hair dye, cut and bow dry for no charge.

Mary feels that Jill got the better of the deal and setting up the booking system would make them more even. It's not as if Jill had to start from scratch, as Mary had already paid someone to set up the initial website.

The raffle prize has nothing to do with the situation. Jill would’ve got that regardless of offering website advice or not, as she won it in a raffle (which she would’ve bought a ticket for). Mary is 100% in the wrong here for expecting free web services.

PopandFizz · 01/07/2024 18:53

I'm going to go against the grain here but as a business owner that offers similar services to Jill, Jill should have made her prices clear for further work if it was being discussed or hinted at during the appointment.

From your other posts OP, knowing you're Jill and are new to the area, I definitely wouldn't charge her and make a potential enemy in the community. Hairdressers in particular are likely to gossip (sorry hairdressers!) And be someone who talks to a lot of locals.
I would send her a message and apologise just saying you're sorry you hadn't made it clear and we'll waive the online booking system and then if you want anything in future we can discuss prices or a trade.

Online booking systems aren't hard to implement so not sure this is a hill you should die on for less than an hours work...

L26 · 01/07/2024 20:06

mary paid for the work Jill did at the time by waiving the colour cost.
now is even again so any further work Mary should pay for.

Josienpaul · 02/07/2024 22:06

Had Jill started adding treatments on afterwards, it would have not been accepted well by Mary and she’d have charged extra.

further work going forward would be paid for - treatments or website work

Nelle96 · 03/07/2024 09:22

She should absolutely charge for setting up the online booking system. The phrase ‘ give someone sn inch and they take a mile’ comes to mind.

Heidi75 · 03/07/2024 15:55

ihaircut101 · 27/06/2024 12:50

Thanks for replies so far. Just to add Mary did also provide the cut and blow dry free (raffle prize) as well as the tint.

The raffle prize is irrelevant to the situation, she provided that as a prize to whoever was organising the raffle, this has nothing to do with the winner of that prize

Trytobekinder · 03/07/2024 19:01

Look forget the mates' rates for getting work in or exposure or whatever other flimsy reason is suggested to women to encourage them to charge less than their worth. All this will get you is doing a lot of work for not much money and people thinking that they too can get similarly cheap work off you. Can you imagine a man worrying about offending his barber by not doing a load of free work in return for a free cut? No, and his friends wouldn't be suggesting he did the free work either.

Crazylady333 · 03/07/2024 20:46

Jill is right!!!

Kyliejane · 04/07/2024 10:37

mary waived the colour cost because jill had already helped her in the set up and initial content and website changes. They were then even.
any work done after this would be chargeable.
