Raffle prize win - what would you do

Writing this without saying which side I am, would be interested in knowing who you think is 'right'.

Jill won a raffle prize of a cut and blow dry at a new salon owned by Mary. When Jill attended to claim her prize she also booked in for a root tint, which she expected to pay for.

During their session Mary mentioned business was not so good and she thought it partly due to her website content. Jill told her that her business was website marketing and offered to take a look at Mary's website, which she did. Jill made a lot of suggestions, she rewrote some of the content and suggested mary implement an online booking facility. Mary was very happy with the changes and as a thank you waived the cost of the colour.

About a month later, Mary contacted Jill and asked her to set up the online booking system, Jill was agreeable to take this on and explained her fees. Mary was taken aback at being asked to pay as felt as she had waived the cost of the hair dye treatment, that should cover the cost of the website work.

What do you think? Should Jill charge for this extra work? If yes, would it be ok for Mary to ask Jill to now pay for the colour treatment she had?

Raffle prize is irrelevant. How much was the tiny, how much would have been charges for the website work already carried out?

MintsPi · 27/06/2024 13:34

Mary is in the wrong and it seems like a fair trade that Mary was originally happy with.

I think the OP is Jill and the raffle mention was playing devils advocate

Greatmate · 27/06/2024 13:43

Mary is a CF. If she wants a service she needs to pay for it.

Jill brought a raffle ticket and won. During her prize Mary discussed her business while Jill should have been relaxing. Jill kindly helped Mary and provided a sevice while she should have been chilling. Mary gave Jill a tint to thank her for her expertise. That tiny doesn't give Mary indefinite access to Jill's knowledge. Same way the raffle tickets didn't give Jill unlimited lifetime cut and blow-dries.

Ponderingwindow · 27/06/2024 13:43

Jill might be willing to do more website work for service instead of money. Bartering between small business is not unusual.

one friendly conversation and one root tint did not buy unlimited website revision

B1anche · 27/06/2024 13:43

Defo Mary in the wrong. I think you are Jill.

Thanks for replies so far. Just to add Mary did also provide the cut and blow dry free (raffle prize) as well as the tint.

But as you say, that’s a raffle prize. It’s irrelevant. Why do you keep mentioning it?

I’ve compared a few local salons and they all seem to charge around £50 for a roots tint. The idea that Mary expects not only copy review and editing AND advice on an online booking system, but also implementation of said system, in return for a 50 quid treatment, is laughable.

greenpolarbear · 27/06/2024 13:58

Mary absolutely taking the pee.

LakeTiticaca · 27/06/2024 14:02

I'm with Jill. She did the work and Mary offered the tint in exchange.
No further work was discussed at the time. Jill is correct to say no more freebies and move to a different hairdresser as well 😉

Dotjones · 27/06/2024 14:06

Mary's in the wrong. It's not even a close decision.

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 27/06/2024 14:08

The only way I can make Mary not a total CF is if she thought they'd entered a on-going situation where they would work for each othe for free

So regular website updates for regular hair treatments no money changing heands either way. But even in that case she needed to be clearer about it and I'm not sure if it would work as the 2 services might have very differnt values

The cut and blow dry is irrelevant as it was a free prize and to be given regardless.

This surely comes down to the cost of the hair tint vs the hours that Jill put in coming up with suggestions for Mary. As Jill re-wrote lots of the content, then I'd say that this work as of same value to the hair tint.

So if Mary wants further work doing e.g. implementing an online booking system, then Mary should pay for it.

I'm guessing Mary gave the root tint for free as she assumed that Jill was also going to implement the online booking system?

Ginkypig · 27/06/2024 14:10

New work= new arrangement.

forget about cut and blow dry that is completely separate as it was a raffle.

client provided a service (work on a website) for salon owner and instead of money payment the salon owner provided her services as payment. Both happy with outcome.
END OF ARRANGEMENT.

NEW ARRANGEMENT!
salon owner contacted client to ask for services
client responded agreeing and explains fees.

salon owner now needs to decide to
either pay for services
or extend an offer for free services.

client can then decide if they want to accept instead of payment

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 27/06/2024 14:11

I agree Mary is wrong. I disagree that the amount of time and the value of either service is valid. Jill offered to help and mary agreed to waive the cost of the tint in return. Both were happy with that agreement.

Now there needs to be a new agreement.

I suspect Mary thinks that the online booking sstem is a 5 minute job for Jill.

C1N1C · 27/06/2024 14:11

YellowHairband · 27/06/2024 12:55

If Mary had decided not to go ahead with any further changes, would she have then asked for money for the tint? No, because she'd already accepted that the free hairdressing work was done in exchange for the free website work.

You cant agree that ("I'll do it for free in exchange for your website work") and then decide to add on other things the other person owes you.

This

PossumintheHouse · 27/06/2024 14:17

Mary is a cheeky bitch, quite frankly. A free hair tint in exchange for re-writing website copy and offering expertise on how to improve her website is a very fair trade. If Mary wants future work, she pays for it - or she could offer another exchange of services. She is not entitled to keep milking the free tint for limitless website editing.
The cut and blow dry was a raffle prize and plays no part in the original exchange.

MessyHouseHappyHouse · 27/06/2024 14:24

You’re obviously ‘Jill’ because of your thread title, otherwise if it was Mary, the bit about the Raffle prize would have been lost in the initial opening post. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Assuming you are qualified and experienced, just as Mary is, then it’s reasonable to expect to charge for your professional services.

However, if you’re self taught, then I can understand Mary’s take on the arrangement.

summersofdoom · 27/06/2024 14:26

Jill was agreeable to take this on and explained her fees.
perfectly handled.

the original was a very fair swap, as a thank you waived the cost of the colour. Knowing the price of a tint, no-one was taking advantage.

Then Jill was clear about expectations and cost.

Should Jill charge for this extra work? of course she should!

If yes, would it be ok for Mary to ask Jill to now pay for the colour treatment she had? no, rude and spiteful. Does Mary go and ask for her flowers or bottle of wine back when she's invited for diner and she doesn't like the food given by her friends?

ihaircut101 · 27/06/2024 14:27

Regardless of raffle prize, Jill still got a hair dye, cut and bow dry for no charge.

Mary feels that Jill got the better of the deal and setting up the booking system would make them more even. It's not as if Jill had to start from scratch, as Mary had already paid someone to set up the initial website.

OP posts:
MiamiWindMachine · 27/06/2024 14:27

I wonder whether Mary is a CF in general or if this is a classic case of creative services being undervalued. If Jill was an accountant or lawyer who’d agreed to give some paperwork a quick once-over in exchange for the tint, would Mary then expect her to do a full tax return or set up a new business entity within that same “price”?

MiddleagedBeachbum · 27/06/2024 14:28

I work in marketing and to answer this we need to know hours involved.
If it’s only a few hours YABU but if it’s a huge amount of work YANBU

No, Jill purchased a raffle ticket, which got her a cut and blow dry.

Then, Jill got a hair dye for free, in exchange for which she did some work for mary's website. Which, presumably, Mary was happy about at the time.

I'm impressed OP - it's usually obvious which one you are, but this is a little unclear. I think you're Jill, but you see Mary's point and feel a bit bad.

You can't just say "regardless" and then disregard the raffle prize, it's very relevent!

Gorgonemilezola · 27/06/2024 14:30

After your last post I think you're definitely Mary. Jill didn't get the cut and blow dry free, she bought a raffle ticket and won a prize.

Free advice on website and free tint - you're now even.

Anything more from Jill - you pays your way.

FFS 😂 Mary is utterly deluded. Does she realise how much a decent website developer costs nowadays? Jill's work in exchange for the tint would have come out at a couple of hundred quid. She's also ignorant as to how much work it can be to implement changes such as an efficient online booking system to an existing website. Pay up.
