Raffle prize win - what would you do

Writing this without saying which side I am, would be interested in knowing who you think is 'right'.

Jill won a raffle prize of a cut and blow dry at a new salon owned by Mary. When Jill attended to claim her prize she also booked in for a root tint, which she expected to pay for.

During their session Mary mentioned business was not so good and she thought it partly due to her website content. Jill told her that her business was website marketing and offered to take a look at Mary's website, which she did. Jill made a lot of suggestions, she rewrote some of the content and suggested mary implement an online booking facility. Mary was very happy with the changes and as a thank you waived the cost of the colour.

About a month later, Mary contacted Jill and asked her to set up the online booking system, Jill was agreeable to take this on and explained her fees. Mary was taken aback at being asked to pay as felt as she had waived the cost of the hair dye treatment, that should cover the cost of the website work.

What do you think? Should Jill charge for this extra work? If yes, would it be ok for Mary to ask Jill to now pay for the colour treatment she had?

Regardless of raffle prize, Jill still got a hair dye, cut and bow dry for no charge.

Mary feels that Jill got the better of the deal and setting up the booking system would make them more even. It's not as if Jill had to start from scratch, as Mary had already paid someone to set up the initial website.

Jill got the tint as an (unasked for) quid pro quo in return for offering her expert opinion on Mary's website on the day of the hair appointment. She got the cut and blow dry as a prize - it's outside the equation! Mary shouldn't have offered to waive the tint charge if she didn't feel that the advice she received more than made up for the tint. She can't expect to "re-balance" the "deal" at this stage by asking for more.

Mary needs to consider whether pursuing this is a good business decision, given that Jill is likely to tell all her friends and contacts about this interaction and as you can see from the comments on this thread, the vast majority of posters think Mary is a CF.

The raffle prize is out of the equation, as she won that fair and square.

So at the hairdresser Jill gave Mary great advice and help which helped her business, so she had a free colour. One free colour does not mean free business advice and IT work for life. Mary needs to pay

Omg, I missed this, are you mary: are you now trying to pretend the raffle -rise was part of the deal ? ?

Viviennemary · 27/06/2024 14:50

The two things aren't very comparable. They should both have been clearer with each other as regards what work was done in exchange for what. Does sound like Mary's expectations were high. As I would imagine that the hours spent on the website work were a lot more than the time it took for the tint even taking into consideration other costs like the dye itself.

WhodoVoodoo · 27/06/2024 14:50

Jill received the prize of the hair cut and blow dry, therefore this should not be considered as part of any equation. The value of the root tint was valued by Mary at the time to be such as worth the free advice and help she had thus received. Any further input from Jill is a new transaction and should be charged as such. Mary is a CF.

Then you , sorry, Mary needs to go back to the people who did the initial work and ask them how much it will cost to add on online booking.

Sookafatwan · 27/06/2024 14:52

Jill should wash her hands of the whole episode.

OccasionalHope · 27/06/2024 14:53

I think Jill should have explained the likely cost of implementing her suggestions, so perhaps as a goodwill gesture she should now offer to pay for the tint. But yes, she should then charge her going rate for the website work.

Darkfire · 27/06/2024 14:54

The raffle prize needs to come out of the equation.

Mary should go ahead and charge Jill for tint.
Jill should then charge Mary for the time she spent on the website consultation.

Mary will owe Jill money, Jill can add it to a revised quote for the additional work Mary asked for.

Insidelaurashead · 27/06/2024 14:55

I know someone who is a copywriter for a job. They charge a couple of hundred dollars for a page of content (like say an article) of maybe up to 1,000 words. If Jill has rewritten some words for Mary's website, that's likely to be £100+ worth of work she could have charged someone else for, so Mary got a bargain

Then if Mary expected future work to be included in the deal she should have made this clear at the time - is she expecting future upgrades, tweaks or glitches on the site to be included too?

As things stood it was cut and blow dry "free" because it was a raffle prize and colour paid for by the advice/revamp of the site, which sounds reasonable to me unless Mary's charge for a colour is exorbitant

Either way Mary's probably lost a potential future customer, so by her own choice may be the loser in the end

FunLurker · 27/06/2024 12:32

Jill should charge for the work and Mary shouldn't ask for the tint money. If Mary asks for tint money I'd be inclined to charge for the advice.

This. Mary is being super cheeky to expect more free work.

Crumpleton · 27/06/2024 14:56

IMO..
The minute Jill left the salon it was a new day business wise.
Tint was given free in exchange for help on website, free...

Original cut and blow dry was paid for by way of a raffle ticket.

While it was nice of Mary to give the tint free of charge it was in reality 'payment' for Jill's expertise in working on her website.

When Mary offered, and Jill accepted the free tint I can't see that Jill even considered it would be given in return for more free work on Mary's website.

How would Mary feel if Jill came back to the salon and asked for another tint free of charge as the last one has faded.

summersofdoom · 27/06/2024 14:57

Mary feels that Jill got the better of the deal

Jill won a price given away by Mary - of course she got something.
What did Mary think would happen? Does she need someone to explain to her what it means when you GIVE AWAY something, anything?

Did she think she would find a way to sneakily charge for the price?
I don't know if Mary is a CF or just stupid.

Mary has done very well having a free marketing consultation in exchange for a tint.

Insidelaurashead · 27/06/2024 14:57

If I were Jill, and Mary told me I should do more work for free because I won the cut and blow dry in a raffle, I would be complaining to the raffle organisers that my 'prize' was not actually, as it turns out, a prize

AlwaysGinPlease · 27/06/2024 14:57

Have only read the original post. Mary is a CF indeed! The tint being waived was to cover the initial IT work from Jill. For Mary to expect ongoing work for the cost of a tint which won't be a lot, is extremely cheeky and rude. Jill should walk away.

Ah OK, then. We'll just ignore all of the copy editing Jill did and the expert advice she gave. Sounds fair.

Quite, I’d be posting saying I won a prize and Mary now says I’ve to do work doe her as I won it.

Billybagpuss · 27/06/2024 14:58

I vote OP is Mary and we’ll never find out as she’ll not post again because we’re saying she is the CF

TheDarkMonarch · 27/06/2024 14:59

Jill did pay for the cut and blow dry. She paid the price of the raffle ticket. It is literally the point of a raffle that you pay for something that it is then luck whether you get it or not.

She gave good advice in return for the tint. What's the cost of a tint? £50-100 if done by a qualified professional?

You wouldn't get a web developer to even start work for that. Maybe someone who does it to raise a bit of cash informally as a side hussle, but not a professional. Mary is deluded if she thinks they have equal commercial value.

Lakeyloo · 27/06/2024 14:59

Agree with others... the raffle prize is irrelevant. It was donated to the cause, not to Jill. Jill was just lucky enough to win it, and it would have cost her something as she bought the tickets. The free tint for the free consultancy advice is fair. Anything else from either side should now be paid for.

IncompleteSenten · 27/06/2024 14:59

Jill got a free tint in exchange for some work on the website.

The raffle prize was separate and is completely irrelevant. Mary can't now somehow decide to count the cost of a raffle prize because it suits her to do so.

They exchanged services and are square now. Any future work can't be offset against a bloody raffle prize! Mary is being ridiculous.

Then Mary should not have offered the free tint. Regardless, she cannot expect a new deal now with additional free work from a skilled professional. Mary is digging herself deeper into the CF hole as the thread goes on.

LizzeyBenett · 27/06/2024 15:01

Think Jill should absolutely charge for any more work . Not sure how Mary would think it's ok to expect anything else to be free. And. The raffle prize shouldn't even come into it Mary donated that before this situation even arose. I highly doubt the price of a tint would even touch the cost of what Mary is looking for were she to hire somebody else to do it .

TheDarkMonarch · 27/06/2024 15:01

Jill won the prize, and at best Mary will have won a new client, at worst Jill will have had a great experience and will tell others.

Oh, I think the 'at worst'' scenario probably got a lot worse since Mary tried to swindle Jill out of free web development work Grin
