What on earth is going on outside the university where the live debate is taking place? Sounds pretty crazy!

I'm so grateful to the few posters here who are saying they wouldn't actually mind paying MORE tax to live in a country where public services actually work! I couldn't agree more, especially as regards the Health Service. I don't understand why people will vote Conservative so that Rishi can cut their tax bill by a few quid. I've already been forced out of NHS dentistry. I'm convinced the Conservatives will end up also privatising GP services if they get the chance. I can't afford private medical insurance and treatment as well. I'm on a low income, with no hope of increasing it due to being almost 64 and medically retired, therefore on fixed ill health pension from my previous employment. Currently this is supplemented by some contribution based ESA, but I am terribly worried I will lose that if the Conservatives press on with their plans to further slash ill health benefits. I've never claimed PIP as I'm not strong enough to endure the claims process - I have long standing problems with anxiety and depression. I know many on MN will consider me lazy and inadequate because of this. I assure you that I worked as long as I possibly could, and have paid enough years National Insurance to qualify for full State Pension, so please don't come at me. I just hope younger people will think long and hard about the type of government they want. Change of circumstances can happen to any of us, a decent safety net is not unreasonable in a country like the UK. I'm tired of hearing about 'Great' Britain, a country happy to have mass housing insecurity, increasing homelessness, a failing health service, almost bankrupt education system, decrepit roads etc etc etc. Please vote for anyone other than the Conservatives!

You are spot on!! Under the Tories the most vulnerable in our society suffer more. Destroying the NHS was a deliberate plan be in no doubt about that. They hate the public sector and always have done. Anyone that votes for them had better be able to afford private health care. I'm having to pay for an operation that I would wait two years for on the NHS as it stands at the moment. I'm bloody lucky I have a savings account I can raid, but what about those that can't?? I would rather pay more tax and have a decent healthcare system that works for me everyone.

The extra tenner won't make a blind bit if difference when prople can't get dentists and are paying out hundreds of £ more for private, or they have to get thrir car fixed gor hundreds because the roads are crap or they have pay for basic healthcare they haven't budgeted for because they expected it from.the NHS. £10 is what I spend on gluesticks because the schools are so underfunded parents are having to subsidise their resources.

But Labour might not be promising tax cuts, especially for anyone who works for a living, but the promises they’ve made regarding ‘fixing’ everything has to be paid for somehow, and their sums just don’t add up. We will still be paying that £10 out, but via another route. It’s swings and roundabouts - things have to be paid for, however that money might be got from us.

Please don’t start derailing this post with the Palestine thing. You have enough threads going on about it, why not pop on there instead?

'The palestine thing??' It's called genocide my love.
Also this thread is about the protests. It's in the actual title dear.

Pointless protest. What can govt do realistically. Advise the war stops to the Israeli govt. That's about it.

They can stop selling arms to Israel while human rights violations are taking place

Free Palestine. Sick of bloody protests about this

What is wrong with you! Tens of thousands of CHILDREN have been blown apart. There can never be enough protest about that

MeinKraft · 26/06/2024 21:13

Oh god there's nothing more depressing than the 'things will never change why bother voting' crew

In truth, there really isn’t a lot to choose between the two main parties except that one is now intent on imploding

Luckily for you, you don’t live in a country where Hamas will come and slaughter innocent civilians.
Hamas won’t stop if Britain asks them to..they can’t just be left to be destroyed by a terrorist organisation..

You seem to be entirely blind to the slaughter of innocent Palestinian citizens. Do only Israeli lives matter?
Britain should stop arming Israel. That’s within the power of the government.
Britain could also stop abstaining in UN votes. That’s within the power of the government.
Britain could also recognise the Palestinian state. Thats within the power of the government.
Essentially what you are saying is that you didn’t WANT the government to use its power in this way.

No, the thread is mentioning how noisy the protests were, distracting from the debate inside. ‘Dear’. It didn’t really invite further narrative on why it was happening. We all know why they were protesting.

Freefree · 27/06/2024 21:48

It's so very telling about a person when they don't want to hear about the 'palestine thing'
Try being a better human please.

I don't need to be invited to narrate I can give my opinions as I please
