What on earth is going on outside the university where the live debate is taking place? Sounds pretty crazy!

I don’t get how Starmer thinks he can take out gangs. If it’s a solution why is the EU with their billions spent on this issue not doing it?

We’ll be the only country taking that stance

I'm sure you are. Genocide clearly doesn't bother you then does it

Please don’t start derailing this post with the Palestine thing. You have enough threads going on about it, why not pop on there instead?

Well - to be fair - you started it!

Rishi’s pledge to ‘tackle welfare’ followed up with his pledge to increase child benefit and the pension triple lock pissed me off so much that I had to pour myself a stiff drink. Such twattery.

As opposed to putting them all on planes to Rwanda over the course of 300 years, apparently.

Yes! and I was very disappointed that Keir didn't point out that most benefit claimants are IN WORK!

Glad he mentioned careers though!

WheresFluffy · 26/06/2024 21:00

ghostyslovesheets · 26/06/2024 20:43

yeah and Rushi has banged on about Rwanda and I'm sure he'll mention his mum worked for the NHS - not sure what your point is

As to the protests - we live in a democracy - people are allowed to protest

Apologies, but there's an irony.
The Conservative Public Order Act 2023 suggests otherwise, about protests.

Yes, he missed a trick there. And the Taliban madness above.

Well yes we can process as fast as you like but it’ll just become more attractive to traffickers

as opposed to leaving people languishing in hotels with not right to work for 3+ years because you have damaged the home office immigration processing system so badly

Fizzadora · 26/06/2024 21:01

Why doesn't he mention his Dad owned the factory?
Not exactly like going down the pit is it, but you'd think so the way he bangs on about it.
It doesn't make him (or the other one whose Mum worked for the NHS) any more aware of what life is actually like for lots of ordinary people who live pay cheque to pay cheque or not even that in many cases.
Labour won't make things any better. It will just be same shit different day. They will shout a lot about how much they are doing for the little people but in reality they will just be better at covering up how much their rich mates are benefitting than the Conservatives, just like Blair & Brown were.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 26/06/2024 21:03

Why doesn't he mention his Dad owned the factory?
Because it's not true?

voiceofastar · 26/06/2024 21:03

well quite.

No because people with no right to asylum will be sent back to their country - quicker - maybe if we let people claim asylum in Europe and agreed to take a reasonable percentage in line with the rest of the EU, of legitimate claimants, people wouldn;t need small boats - we have created a lot of the issues with our hard stance and our lack of funding for processing

As opposed to putting them all on planes to Rwanda over the course of 300 years, apparently

And after the Rwanda plan was identified as taking 300 years to solve this issue - Rishi still keeps pushing it as a great idea - does he really think that people can't see through that.

They aren't being processed now. There is a massive backlog. It makes us very attractive to people smugglers

There was something he said that got a big round of applause, was it that? I’m listening on the radio.

Acceptance rate for UK is high. High enough for people to see it as a good chance

It’s over 60% so high amount will be given asylum

Processing faster is an invitation to higher numbers

I got really annoyed when he was basically saying those claiming benefits because they are not fit to work need a higher level of proof to get signed off and get any benefits. I've watched family members who can't work due to disability be terrified already by the disgraceful, humiliating ways to prove their disability....it sickening already.

ghostyslovesheets · 26/06/2024 21:08

@EasternStandard so we should stop accepting people who have a legitimate asylum claims? Really? Once they have been processed they can work and pay tax and all sorts! but what should we do - send them back to hell?

It’s a point on the rate of acceptance to counter yours about sending people back.

We accept around 60% and faster processing will invite higher numbers.

I actually like this presenter

She’s keeping them to the question

It’s Mishal Husain. She’s my favourite interviewer.
