… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

There is no Chelsea bun on the Cambridge chart. Have Fitzbillies not supersized theirs?
I would eat half and save half to look forward to.

Kinshipug · 26/06/2024 14:25

It's massive. But there is no rule stating you must eat the entire bun all at once to yourself. Half today, half tomorrow. It's a bargain and I'm not sure what the problem is. Bread products also tend to freeze well. If it was nice, I'd probably eat the whole thing no problem.

saveforthat · 26/06/2024 14:25

Also you can pop buns/bread in the oven for a few minutes the next day to freshen them up.

Appleblum · 26/06/2024 14:26

It is big! I think I could finish half of it with a nice cup of tea 😀

MeAgainAndAgain · 26/06/2024 14:26

Maybe you need more exercise or to do some gardening or something if you feel you have a poor appetite? I always find my appetite increases if I move my body, which is after all what bodies are for.

And yes, just freeze what you don’t want. Bread and cake type things freeze very well, but slice it up into ten or so portions first. It’ll last months (or even longer) in the freezer wrapped nicely.

Sometimes I make a chocolate cake and fill it with icing, the joy of it freezing nicely is that it also defrosts quite quickly so you can actually eat the whole cake in one day even if you only take it out one slice at a time.

Princesscounsuelabananahammock · 26/06/2024 14:27

What's the point in this thread? Just eat it or don't eat it. Most people don't really care

Every other day there's people on here complaining about how annoying competitive undereating is and now I kindof see their point.

Encouraging undereating and demonising enjoying food can be just as damaging to our young people as encouraging gluteny

marylou25 · 26/06/2024 14:28

I don't think anyone can deny portion sizes have got bigger, that's a fact surely?

I have bun trays from the 1970s and it's next to impossible to get the paper liners for them anymore, some of the 'mini' cupcake cases actually fit them but they are supposed to be smaller than a normal cupcake size. But then what's normal! I bought a cupcake a few years ago and the thing was so massive I weighed it when I got home, it was 7ozs, 3 of which was icing, sure I still have the pics somewhere so basically nearly half pound of cake for what was definitely meant to be just one serving.

I totally agree it's too big even though it was cheap but that's kind of worse in some ways, you wouldn't put much in the line of quality ingredients like real butter for example into something that size/price

dunkdemunder · 26/06/2024 14:28

@voiceofastar

I read something on here from a poster who was gobsmacked at the idea someone could finish a tub of ben & jerry's in one sitting and said that one tub shared between her and her husband lasted at least three days. Now that is batshit.

No no no. One tub one person one sitting? No freaking way is that normal.
It would last a short week in our house with 3 of us picking away at it.

Iaskedyouthrice · 26/06/2024 14:28

The OP will most likely be overweight as will most of the people agreeing with her and going on about obesity. There's some weird psychological stuff going on with these kinds of threads.
I'm not overweight and I could eat that with a lovely cup of tea. I just wouldn't eat one very often. I would imagine the OP does eat things like this often and this is a way for her to feel better about that. Disordered eating causes strange behaviours.

purplecaterpillar · 26/06/2024 14:28

Chelsea bins have always been large from bakeries. I remember buying ones 40 years ago that were large. It is supermarkets that have made them smaller.
Traditionally chelsea bins are large, but bakeries also offer smaller size bins as well. Just choose one of them.

A week between three of you? I can't tell if you're joking or not!

dunkdemunder · 26/06/2024 14:30

@voiceofastar

A Ben and Jerry's tub is about 1200 calories. If you think it's normal for one person to eat that in one sitting then it's not the people saying no that are confused.

That's about an entire extra day of food for many women.

purplecaterpillar · 26/06/2024 14:30

@marylou25 you are comparing different things. Bun trays years ago were for fairy cakes. Cup cakes are an American import and were always larger with much more icing than fairy cakes. You don't need liners, just grease them properly.

You know what bread crisps up in the oven? French sticks. Mmmmmmmm.

Cut it with a sharp knife when frozen, slice it in half, bake it and the inside is soft and the outside is soo crispy.

It's a while since I had one but from memory they're quite airy so that might well only have as many calories in it as a slice of rocky road, for example, anyway. Either way there's no such thing as the food police. We're all grown ups we can choose what we do and don't eat

This is the picture from Paul Hollywood’s Chelsea bun recipe on the BBC website. . They don’t look anything like as big as the OP’s

WhereDoWeGoFromHereHmmm · 26/06/2024 14:31

I had never heard of a Chelsea bun until this thread.

Looking at the photo I'd have expected to pay about £3.85 for it. Whatever it might be.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/06/2024 14:32

I think Chelsea buns were always big - I’m not even sure they’re designed to be eaten in one go by one person

I'm overweight and would happily eat it.

Meanwhile my MIL is tiny and thin as a rake and wouldn't even touch it (and judge anyone who did very harshly)

Growlybear83 · 26/06/2024 14:33

Is this meant as yet another competitive under eating thread!! It looks like a normal sized Chelsea bun to me.

dunkdemunder · 26/06/2024 14:33

@voiceofastar year. 100% a 'short' week. So it would probably run out after day 5 but by then no one would care. Probably there would be a small amount left in the bottom that would get tossed after we realised it had been sitting in the freezer and gone a bit odd with no yummy bits left in it. 2 adults and one 18dd

I can confirm that Fitzbillies haven’t super sized their buns, @eggandonion. I would guess they are about 4 x 4 x 3 inches. However, in the interests of accuracy, I am going up to Cambridge this week so I shall sacrifice my waistline for the sake of science and buy some. I will be sure to take my tape measure and collect some data.

I could eat the whole tray of those and I’m a size 8! 😂

This thread is a bit crackers.

BaselineDrop · 26/06/2024 13:56

Were you expecting a bum a quarter of the size? I 1.5 inch square bun? That’s the size of a biscuit and Chelsea buns have never been that size!

That's not how maths works.

A quarter of something 6x6 is 3x3.

(And I suspect op would have been very surprised to get a bum with her order 😁)

A tub of ice cream is not meant to be one portion. You’re getting confused with the little tubs you get in the theatre @voiceofastar - those are one portion.

There are three of us in this house, and a tub like that is usually enough for two sittings of pudding (so two different days) for the three of us.

Not that i would buy Ben & Jerry’s.
