… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

You could freeze half (or three quarters if it’s so very big) instead of letting it go stale and go to waste?

sugarbyebye · 26/06/2024 13:47

share it with a fat friend (or daughter, looking at you mum) and make horrified noises about how can they fit all that in?

Comedycook · 26/06/2024 13:47

It's because everyone else is a greedy fat pig....but you're not op. I bet you're teeny tiny too

TheShellBeach · 26/06/2024 13:47

Stealth brag alert.

Is it definitely intended as a single serving rather than feeding a whole family ?

They must be the MN chicken feeds a family for a week troll

1offnamechange · 26/06/2024 13:48

I'd say larger size of average. Obviously eating a cake that size every day wouldn't be great but the whole point of it is you ordered it as an occasional treat?

only being able to eat a quarter of it and wasting the rest is ridiculous. Eat half now (or even a quarter now, quarter in the afternoon with a cup of tea), then freeze or toast the other half tomorrow

BIWI · 26/06/2024 13:49

This is a ridiculous thing to say. Eat what you want but freeze the rest.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/06/2024 13:50

I occasionally like a Chelsea bun from our bakers (sadly a lot more than £1.50 - because London).

Chelsea buns are hefty things. I often cut it in two and share or eat it over a couple of days. But sometimes I eat the whole lot in one go.

WingSluts · 26/06/2024 13:50

Elphame · 26/06/2024 13:41

£1.50

That tells me it cost you £1.50, not whether you're annoyed or not.

This really is a total non-issue.

CookStrait · 26/06/2024 13:51

Wrong thing to post on MN, they’d eeeesily 🐽 down the entire bakery & still be hungry.

EnglishBluebell · 26/06/2024 13:51

We've not had a fat shaming thread in a while. OP had to remedy that 🙄Biscuit

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 26/06/2024 13:52

Must have been a huge counter if you'd mistaken it for a regular-sized bun when you asked for one.

Put it in a box, it'll still be fresh tomorrow.

GasPanic · 26/06/2024 13:53

Were you waggling your hands in the air as you contemplated the enormity of it ?

Edit : Also trying to eat that with a teaspoon would be silly.

Justcallmebebes · 26/06/2024 13:53

I totally agree with you OP. It's why we have an obesity problem in the west

Borgonzola · 26/06/2024 13:53

My only issue with it is that it looks dry af. Chelsea buns should be sticky (and big)

Trickabrick · 26/06/2024 13:53

I thought Chelsea buns had icing on them, so I’d be disappointed it didn’t but somewhat mollified by the generous size (entirely missing the point of the thread!). I’m clearly thinking of a different bun though!

Just eat what you want and either freeze the rest or stick it in some Tupperware to keep fresh for a few days.

fieldsofbutterflies · 26/06/2024 13:54

Ooh, we've not had a thread like this in at least 24 hours.

It's not the shops fault you're so tiny you can only just manage a quarter of it Hmm

Just whack some butter on it instead 😂

Exactly this. Eat your quarter now, freeze two quarters in portions and leave one for tomorrow that you can revive from being slightly stale in the microwave/oven

PinkyFlamingo · 26/06/2024 13:56

Oh my you can only eat a quarter of that, you are so dtsviplined.

BaselineDrop · 26/06/2024 13:56

Were you expecting a bum a quarter of the size? I 1.5 inch square bun? That’s the size of a biscuit and Chelsea buns have never been that size!

WhatAFaffyFiasco · 26/06/2024 13:57

I would have been celebrating, sent a pic to dh, and said we're definately going back there, especially if it tastes good as well!

Cling film left overs, place in an airtight container, it should still be good tomo! If not, sticking it in the microwave for afew seconds is always a great rescue remedy as well, alittle butter melting in, yum!

I would be annoyed if it was expensive and tiny!

YABVU!! And before any judgement is made, I'm a UK size 8-10, very fit and active with a varied diet. I'll always go for the biggest chicken too, value for money (rare these days)! 😂

leopardski · 26/06/2024 13:57

Elphame · 26/06/2024 13:41

It is 6 inches square and 3 inches deep!

I’m really laughing at the image of you measuring it 🤣 as they say up North just get it down ya, love

Grammarnut · 26/06/2024 13:57

Looks to be a quite large Chelsea bun. Some for lunch, some for tea. At least you are not being short-measured.

bumblingbovine49 · 26/06/2024 13:57

That is quite big but I'm certain it would last until tomorrow if wrapped and sealed in a plastic bag or cover

Plus for the less well-off, that is very good value - £1.50 for a bun that can be shared between 2-3 people
