… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

Eat what you want and turn the rest into a bread and butter pudding, or freeze it. Over-reaction, much?

Chaoseverywhere · 28/06/2024 08:14

this is why im fat. No self control. When presented with a bun I eat it. I would not know I can eat just the amount I want. I think this is what you’re getting at?

CrimsonStar · 28/06/2024 09:36

I don’t know your age but people in their 20s and 30s eat more than people in their 40-50s. My husband’s mom always says how big the portions are in the restaurants (she is in her 60s) when I don’t have a problem with it. His grandma does the same thing (cuts her buns, cakes in half because the serving is too big). When I just joined their family, I remember she used to serve me a smaller portion than to men in the family until my husband told her that I eat normal (men size) portions 😂
I would eat that bun in one go. I love food and I enjoy it. Btw I am fit, size 6-8 in UK and I believe it is because I don’t judge food and thoroughly enjoy it (both cooking and eating).

I could eat a whole one of those but I'd probably eat it instead of breakfast or lunch, or if I did eat it as a snack I'd be conscious that it was a bit over-indulgent of me. I could also happily share it with a friend or family member. I think it's very good value for the price and if you have no-one to share it with, you could always just freeze half or put it in an airtight tub and eat it tomorrow.

Janehasamane · 28/06/2024 12:22

Do folks really do that, freeze half a bun, are peoples freezers litered wirh half eaten buns?

Well, no, because you take it out again a week later or whenever and eat it...

Rhaenys · 28/06/2024 14:10

It is a bit big but £1.50 is a great price!

User235648 · 28/06/2024 14:24

The fat normalisation on MN is wild. That's a huge portion of carbs by objective measure (no nutritionist would recommend it), but each thread about food always descends into people violently defending their right to eat as much junk as they want because skinny people are killjoys.

You must be pretty sedentary to consider this a huge portion of carbs, for me that’d be a snack! (Size 6, skinny killjoy)

ShinyPebble32 · 28/06/2024 19:22

Size isn’t everything, anyway! That bun is probably half the calorie count of say, a cupcake - it might have larger dimensions but it is risen, and full of air. If you rolled in into a ball it would be around golf ball sized. A cupcake is smaller in size but dense, and covered with a thick layer of sugar. What an utterly silly post this was, I hope you’re ashamed of yourself OP. 🤣

AllTheChaos · 28/06/2024 19:57

Quarter it, eat 1/4, freeze the other three pieces, defrost one when you want it, couple of minutes in the oven or air fryer and it will be like it’s fresh. Bob’s your uncle!

It’s been two days. The bun is probably rock hard by now or fully consumed.

What's Saran wrap? Clingfilm?

Sorry, US resident here. Yes, Clingfilm. Even a sandwich bag would keep it fresh.

where is this bakery? (asking for a friend)

Love this!! 🤣🤣

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 29/06/2024 08:54

Six inches square?! 15cm x 15cm?
If that's really a teaspoon you've photographed it next to, your measurements are way off.
I reckon it's half that size (6-7cm x 6-7cm)

YABU for not realising that is a fairly standard size for a chelsea bun - people don't tend to make them much smaller than that - and that although it's sweet, it's made with enriched yeasted dough, and is closer to bread than 'cake'!

It's good you don't live in a Scandinavian country where traditional cinnamon/cardamom rolls are often much bigger than this! (eg Hagabullar from Gothenburg or Korvapuusti from Finland)

KTheGrey · 29/06/2024 16:52

Yep. Hagabullar = bigger.

That's more of a loaf though? No one is expected to eat a whole one that's ridiculous

But "no nutritionist would recommend it" is a stupid metric to use for a bun. It's a bun.

Exactly! Depends how light it is.

I was given a free cinnamon bun is the US. I thought, I will just eat a third and save some as it's bloody huge.

It was so airy that I scoffed the lot, and I have a rubbish appetite and a dicky tum.

Its a leavened yeast based dough, not double chocolate cheesecake.

Mere1 · 29/06/2024 19:12

I agree with OP.

Anything goes as long as it’s not bigger than your head
