… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Re calories and overeating, I don’t think many women (or indeed people) were attending gyms or out jogging in the past as they are now. People who have physical jobs have always been active of course, but in the 1970s who ever said that going to a gym was a thing? Only for a few people I would guess, but now it’s a very mainstream thing to do.

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 26/06/2024 14:36

Portions are ludicrous. You just need to avoid buying these things entirely unless sharing / freezing. People can laugh but this is why waist lines are expanding.

Caspianberg · 26/06/2024 14:36

Chelsea buns at secondary school used to be massive. And 50p. They were about the size of my head. I ate one every other day for about 6 years ( alternated with bacon rolls). This was my second breakfast at about 10am. I was still super scrawny.

might make those Paul Hollywood ones soon after this thread

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/06/2024 14:35

A tub of ice cream is not meant to be one portion. You’re getting confused with the little tubs you get in the theatre @voiceofastar - those are one portion.

There are three of us in this house, and a tub like that is usually enough for two sittings of pudding (so two different days) for the three of us.

Not that i would buy Ben & Jerry’s.

I'm not getting confused. The thread was about 500 ml tubs and most people said they could easily eat the whole thing in one go.

Get a grip. I bet you’re one of those people that goes for dinner and says oh I can’t possibly eat all of this it’s just tooooo much. Pathetic

where is this bakery? (asking for a friend)

OP - WHERE. IS. THIS. BAKERY????

@User1471538275 - I'm shoes on, keys in hand, ready to go.... shall I pick you up? 🚗

TheBerry · 26/06/2024 14:37

It’s probably too big, yeah. There’s a reason obesity is on the rise. I’d still eat it, though.

WhereDoWeGoFromHereHmmm · 26/06/2024 14:31

I had never heard of a Chelsea bun until this thread.

Looking at the photo I'd have expected to pay about £3.85 for it. Whatever it might be.

Chelsea bins have always been large and cheap. They are just sugar dough with some icing and fruit.
Just googled and there are 260 calories in a typical chelsea bun. Anyone who can not eat one is someone with an eating disorder. Anyone should be able to consume less than 300 calories at one sitting. You may not want to eat this bun, but it is ED territory to say you can't.

ChampagneLassie · 26/06/2024 14:39

Elphame · 26/06/2024 13:41

£1.50

bargain. I could share it but I could also happily eat in one sitting. Bakery near me charges £3.65 for very similar looking ones

The ones I've had that look like that are also very aerated, like a big bread roll, so not as much to them as their size suggests.

What's pathetic about not clearing your plate if you're full?

YourMommaWasASnowblower · 26/06/2024 14:34

I could eat the whole tray of those and I’m a size 8! 😂

This thread is a bit crackers.

You must have the metabolism of a shrew in that case. I couldn’t and I’m a 14 (and short).🤷‍♀️

dunkdemunder · 26/06/2024 14:41

Interestingly I can see why size 8 people saying they could eat more than one of these or a whole tray of Paul Hollywood's buns in one sitting think obese people are gluttonous.

They consider what they eat as normal (all massive buns and whole tubs of Ben and Jerry's) and then not surprisingly assume obese people are therefore eating SHIT tonnes more.

They don't. Well some do. But most people could not eat this much in the way of empty calories without becoming obese. It's the lean people who can eat like this who are the outliers.

Iaskedyouthrice · 26/06/2024 14:41

greenpolarbear · 26/06/2024 14:33

I'm overweight and would happily eat it.

Meanwhile my MIL is tiny and thin as a rake and wouldn't even touch it (and judge anyone who did very harshly)

Thats real life though. This is mumsnet where its either competative undereating or overeating. I don't see the problem with anyone of any weight enjoying that bun. It's everything in moderation innit?
If we could all just mind our own business that'd be grand.
The people who shout the loudest about how they possibly couldn't eat more than half a walnut, tend to have the biggest issues with their own weight.

Meowee · 26/06/2024 14:47

Needs some icing on top

I agree. Those are bakery ones. The ones in supermarkets are more solid and more sugary and not really traditional chelsea buns.

£1.50

Perfect, I'll have a couple with my afternoon tea 😂

Sallyh87 · 26/06/2024 14:48

That would feed my whole family for a week and I would boil the left overs for stock, obviously.

🤣🤣🤣

purplecaterpillar · 26/06/2024 14:49

And as a teenager I used to eat a chelsea bun as a snack. I was burning off loads of energy and they are more dough than sugar. They are like iced buns with dried fruit.

CoffeeCantata · 26/06/2024 14:49

Definitely for sharing!

MeAgainAndAgain · 26/06/2024 14:49

So I’ve googled Ben and Jerry’s, they appear to be 465mls. I am sitting here having a cup of tea in an IKEA mug of 370 mls. Are some people saying that something slightly larger than a cup full of ice cream lasts more than one person? Really? I would say it was two portions at the very most.

KTheGrey · 26/06/2024 14:50

That's a brave size of a bun. You need a friend and a tin of custard to take that bad boy on.

Moveoverdarlin · 26/06/2024 14:50

I could eat that no probs.

purplecaterpillar · 26/06/2024 14:52

@KTheGrey it is less than 300 calories. Less calories than some of the coffee drinks people buy.
