… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

I’d eat that easily with a cuppa😂

Tessabelle74 · 29/06/2024 23:59

I'd be queasy after one currant, like a good little mumsnetter should be!
Actually I'd eat the lot in one go! Knock next door and see if they want the rest of it or stick it in a tupperware box for tomorrow 🙄

eggandonion · 30/06/2024 00:38

Women living either side of me have never knocked on my door with leftovers. This makes me sad. I do love all baked goods except anything with cherries. But I can pick them out.

DoreenGrey · 30/06/2024 09:02

Asking for my friend also! £1.50 for that is an absolute bargain!

Sennelier1 · 30/06/2024 09:02

I agree it would've been too big for me to eat in one sitting, but I would happily keep the other half for tomorrow. Put it in a warm oven for just a few minutes and it's delish again!

jasminocereusbritannicus · 30/06/2024 10:12

That’s pretty decent, for a bun. The “I’ll only eat a quarter of it” is being unreasonable. People do this in our staffroom all the time. You cut things into slices and someone comes along and cuts it into tiny pieces whilst protesting they couldn’t possibly eat a whole slice!
why not? It’s not like you’re living on cake… it’s a treat, to be enjoyed as that.

YANBU but put the leftover bit in the freezer

Half a cheap and nasty bun or some more of our largest ever gooseberry crop?

That's a very hard choice to make.

(BTW the remains are long gone. DP had a few bites, pulled the same face I did and the rest went in the food recycling bin)

Why not actually make your own appropriately sized Chelsea buns? They're really easy to make...
Or buy a big one as they're delicious and you xant be bothered
Surely you coukd see the size of it before buying 🤔

Trickabrick · 26/06/2024 13:53

I thought Chelsea buns had icing on them, so I’d be disappointed it didn’t but somewhat mollified by the generous size (entirely missing the point of the thread!). I’m clearly thinking of a different bun though!

Just eat what you want and either freeze the rest or stick it in some Tupperware to keep fresh for a few days.

You're thinking of Belgian buns...

MeAgainAndAgain · 30/06/2024 19:44

I have no idea what all these buns/cakes are and what the taste difference is 😁. I think I have my favourites and stick to them, and everything else is ‘things I don’t prefer’.

I do love the custard slices, only found that out by accident. But no custard doughnuts please, they’re strictly jam only.

AllTheChaos · 30/06/2024 22:54

Have you tried those Portuguese custard tarts @MeAgainAndAgain? they are delicious!

I’m allergic to eggs so I might have discounted them years ago for that reason? 🤷‍♀️

The jam doughnuts in this bakery are twice the size of supermarket ones and the ring doughnuts are bigger than my hand!

I don’t think they do custard ones thank goodness. Those are just so wrong

I wouldn't mind. If it really was too big I would just split with my family or heat the rest up tomorrow.

Oh no! I think vegan ones are available now though, worth a try??

I have done some googling and now have recipes to try 🥧. But I’m not sure if vegan ready made ones are available to buy.

Disappointing cake is one of the worst disappointments for me.

I once made a German apple cake from a sourdough starter I had been given, and it was the worst cake I have ever tasted. Heavy, unsweet, dull. Luckily I had teenage boys at the time, who would eat pretty much anything.

I love custard doughnuts. I can't find them where I live. 😢

rebeccasays · 04/07/2024 17:47

If a teaspoon -the smallest piece of cutlery- is used for scale it doesn't sound that big to me 😅
