… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

You were staggered were you? You opened the paper bag and staggered us the only word you can use to describe how you felt. What a sheltered life you must lead.

And I haven’t lived in the U.K. for a few years so please correct me if I’m wrong but as far as I know you don’t HAVE to actually eat it all? People are allowed to eat however much or as little as they like before popping it in the freezer for another time or feeding it to the birds?

Rickrolypoly · 26/06/2024 13:58

Wow- you'd eat a whole quarter of that? Yikes. I'd literally be sick if I ate a whole quarter. A quick 1/8 and sniff would be enough for me. I'd then package the remaining 7/8 into individual bags and freeze so I could enjoy a piece once a month.

PandoraSox · 26/06/2024 13:58

It is far too big. How would you be able to eat a whole quarter?!

I would manage one sultana from it and then be stuffed for a week.

50shadedofmagnolia · 26/06/2024 13:59

It's huge I'd only eat a quarter too but I would freeze the other 3 portions for a later day

GalacticalFarce · 26/06/2024 13:59

Yeah it's big. Freeze your leftovers then warm when you want it.

Misthios · 26/06/2024 14:00

you'd guzzle a QUARTER?! How could you eat so much? A single raisin would have me completely stuffed until Christmas at least,

seriously it’s not that large, you’re not eating it every day.

Makemydaypunk · 26/06/2024 14:00

The Chelsea buns from my work cafeteria are about that size, I often have one for breakfast and it keeps me full until lunchtime.

Is this a humble brag about what a tiny appetite you have, and that that’s why other people are fat?

You know it🙄

user1984778379202 · 26/06/2024 14:00

For heaven's sake, it's not fat shaming anyone to point out that portion sizes have increased ridiculously over the years! It's a few years old now, but this graphic was in a newspaper article quoting Cambridge Uni experts on the subject and it showed how much more is dished up these days and how normalised bigger portions have become.

I agree with you, OP. We always split. Leftovers would be nice in a bread and butter pudding.

DowntonCrabby · 26/06/2024 14:01

Don’t be a martyr, wasting the remainder on the birds. It’s really not good for the birds anyway. Freeze the rest in the quarter sized portions you can manage and enjoy another day.

I’d manage 2

Deathraystare · 26/06/2024 14:01

Apart from the size it looks very dry!

TheDarkMonarch · 26/06/2024 14:01

I'd be more concerned that it looks as dry as anything.

Olivebrancholivia · 26/06/2024 14:01

That would feed my family for an entire month....

(Or me for approximately 3 minutes 40 seconds)

SheilaWilde · 26/06/2024 14:02

Why has everyone plied on the OP? It's an innocuous observation about the size of a bun (which I agree is massive). Nearly every poster, bar one or two, has used this thread as a vehicle to shame the OP for not wanting to eat an enormous bun and to be downright nasty. Bullying at its finest, I hope you all feel very proud.

Chocolately · 26/06/2024 14:02

I'd freeze what you can't eat. It would do for an easy bread and butter pudding at the weekend 😋

Maybe they have merged several stale buns together, and rebaked. Warm it and butter would be my advice to op. What a predicament 😂

Makemydaypunk · 26/06/2024 14:03

The thing is with Chelsea buns they are not ‘solid’ I can unravel mine, so they are quite airy. The Belgian buns from Warrens are the best, solid and the size of a dinner plate! 😂

Dindundundundeeer · 26/06/2024 14:03

I can come round and eat the 3/4's. That is huge, but I'd manage, just not very often.

We know more people are overweight, and yes this doesn't help. I for one would not have the self control to leave half

@Elphame I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

They freeze well.

GalileoHumpkins · 26/06/2024 14:06

Is anyone able to post a picture of a French bun for comparison?

parkrun500club · 26/06/2024 14:07

Do you live on your own? You can share it. If not, freeze it. And it will still be ok tomorrow.

Non issue in my view!

🙄Op isn't forced to eat the full bun you know, although you'd think this to be the case!

Nobody is bullying anybody, this word isn't a one you should be throwing around lightly, and is insulting to victims of actual 'bullying.'

Op has been given plenty of tips on what to do with the rest. Lighten up!

And actually the thread is insulting to people who have no money, and barely can afford to feed their kids. Yet here we are discussing op's giant bun, that she hasn't got the foggiest what to do with!
Maybe pop down the local food bank, and donate it!
