… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

No wonder we are turning into a Nation of obese people.

Is this a humble brag about what a tiny appetite you have, and that that’s why other people are fat?

This.

Id only eat an eighth of the bun and be stuffed for a fortnight.

StaunchMomma · 26/06/2024 14:09

Oh, I couldn't POSSIBLY eat more than a QUARTER!!

😂

KimberleyClark · 26/06/2024 14:10

I am on no way a competitive undereater and have a BMI of 29 but that does look big to me.

Chocolately · 26/06/2024 14:10

It's Belgian buns that are iced, with a cherry on top.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/06/2024 14:10

I've only read your posts, @Elphame so sorry if anyone else has suggested this - but why not freeze the portion you don't eat, so there is no wastage?

Caspianberg · 26/06/2024 14:10

Is it massive? Or are my teaspoons small?

Just looked at my teaspoons, they are the length of a normal hot cross bun. If my Chelsea bun was hot cross bun size I would be disappointed. I would usually eat 2 toasted hot cross buns

katepilar · 26/06/2024 14:12

Please dont feed it to the birds! Not good for them.

"We've lost sight of normal portion sizes"

But we have…

And I say that as a dedicated cake and bun eater.

Wishitsnows · 26/06/2024 14:12

I can’t believe it’s only £1.50 regardless of size!

ClamFandango · 26/06/2024 14:13

I'm with you OP. I get a bit anxious if cakes or buns are too big - I want a treat, not diabetes, but the food pushers keep provoking me to eat more than I should and then I just feel bad. (Similar to alcohol pushers cajoling teetotallers to drink without any understanding of why they might struggle, but not want to).

dunkdemunder · 26/06/2024 14:13

10 or 20 years ago people used to comment on horror at the gargantuan sizes of food sold in the US with comments of 'that's why they gave an obesity problem.

Now people on here are saying this is normal and weary for one person.

No wonder we are now an obese nation.

This is not a single serving. It's crazy anyone would think this is an appropriate size for one person. I guess like America was just 30 years ahead of us in their deluded views.

We've lost sight of what a normal portion looks like

Nellieinthebarn · 26/06/2024 14:14

Can't you just eat it for lunch as a treat? its about the same volume as a ham roll and a packet of crisps.

You know, it can be shared, it probably is meant to be! It is up to you as an adult how much you choose to eat, nobody
is forced to eat a larger portion than they wish for. Alot of hysteria over nothing.

nosleepforme · 26/06/2024 14:15

If it bothers you that it’s too big, don’t buy it. I don’t get there being a problem with something being too big! Too small, yes
and this doesn’t look big to me

katepilar · 26/06/2024 14:15

I dont think they are claiming its one portion, or are they? It will be still fine tomorrow.

Pipecleanerrevival · 26/06/2024 14:16

For €1.50 you could have had a quarter of a massive salad (then frozen the rest of it for tomorrow).

FeralNun · 26/06/2024 14:16

I could eat half, with no problem. Probs not the whole thing unless starving.

But £1.50 seems astonishingly cheap for something that would feed 2 (or 4??) - I’m guessing you’re not in an affluent or tourist area?

I would happily eat that and have a healthy BMI. I'd just try to balance it out with a bit less lunch/dinner/whatever.

I read something on here from a poster who was gobsmacked at the idea someone could finish a tub of ben & jerry's in one sitting and said that one tub shared between her and her husband lasted at least three days. Now that is batshit.

MrsBillyhargrove · 26/06/2024 14:17

YABU. I hate people who say “oh this cake is just too BIG for little old me!”. Please, give your head a wobble. Eat it or don’t.

One cake that is eaten as a 'treat' is not often. Therefore, this would not give you diabetes if it was a little large. There is always the option of sharing, freezing, donating, etc etc etc. Or if it is such an issue, don't buy it to begin with!

Dontevenlookatme · 26/06/2024 14:21

I’d split that in half and share it. It looks very bready, lots of stodge there.

PrincessScarlett · 26/06/2024 14:21

Haven't Chelsea buns always been this big? My mum used to regularly get them from the bakery and they were always massive compared to the doughnuts or iced buns we got.

saveforthat · 26/06/2024 14:23

It doesn't look 6 inches square. Teaspoons are generally smaller than 6 inches. Post a picture with the bun next to a tape measure. I could definitely eat all of it, regardless of it's size, sadly I am quite fat.
