… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

A WHOLE quarter? No wonder this country has an obesity problem if people go around stuffing themselves like this.

Disgraceful, I tell you. DISGRACEFUL.

I agree. I could make an entire bottle of wine out of a quarter

Somepeoplearesnippy · 27/06/2024 22:50

I’ve been making Chelsea Buns on and off for over 40 years. That looks like a perfectly normal size.

For the record I’m in my 60s and a size 8. The occasional normal size pastry won’t do you any harm.

<fans self> I hope you won’t be drinking that. I have a thimble of sherry every other Christmas - any more than that and I’d be at serious risk of enjoying myself.

Octomingo · 27/06/2024 22:55

Teaspoons aren't very big.
Has it got icing on it? Shouldn't it have icing too?

I'd feel sad if I only ate a quarter of a bun like that. I'd be thinking about the rest of it all day.

Theeffingcleaner · 27/06/2024 23:04

I’m an average size person who eats what I want when I want and I certainly would not be portion controlling any size cake regardless of what anyone else thought, they could call me a greedy pig all they wanted to. I would definitely scoff the lot and enjoy it guilty free especially for that price(wish my local was that cheap, ours is very expensive artisan and restaurant bakery , also small and stingy on the sizes ) Enjoy your bun😋

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/06/2024 13:42

You got a large bun for £1.50 - where is the complaint exactly?

It is actually quite hard to make small Chelsea buns.

I was thinking that too. Are the bakery making any profit on it!?

Oh no. Whatever will you do. Won't anyone think of the Third World people?

First there's poor Rishi without a dishy, now there's you with your giant bun.

Poor barstewards.

Don't wrap it in a damp cloth and place it in the fridge to stop it from going stale, whatever you do. Then the poor birds will starve!

Jesus.

Mumoftwochildrenand6furkids · 27/06/2024 23:13

Agree its far to big id only manage an few bites.

HeadacheEarthquake · 27/06/2024 23:16

How much bread do you eat that you have an order?

And if you literally order bread, why are you struggling with a bun

Theeffingcleaner · 27/06/2024 23:18

Oh gosh I have never laughed so much!!
the replies are hilarious. To think a thread on how big a chelsea bun from a bakery that cost £1.50 would be so popular and the other person can’t see herself eating the blooming thing in one go. Flipping elk the tories will be debating this one in Westminster before long to bring in portion controls in bakeries and restaurants because of the size is not manageable 😂

BlueSkyBeing · 27/06/2024 23:35

I agree, it's huge. No wonder it's normal to be so over weight.

For those who say just enjoy it are missing the point.

"We've lost sight of normal portion sizes"

We are following the USA

eastegg · 27/06/2024 23:54

The most annoying thing about this thread is that people can’t tell the difference between bread and cake. A Chelsea bun is not cake, it’s bread-based, that’s why you (well, I), can manage loads of it. Cake, not so much.

Crikey, I last had a thimble Christmas 1999 and I still feel mildly inebriated. No wonder we're a nation of drunken yobs.

I agree, it's huge. No wonder it's normal to be so over weight.

For those who say just enjoy it are missing the point.

But it's not the size which is causing the OP to get so many sarky replies. Had she just said "wow, look at the size of this Chelsea Bun" everyone would have agreed that it does look on the large-ish side of normal.

It's the faux outrage about being staggered, and it being soooo mahoosive that it has to be quartered and most of it thrown away.

Clear from the OP that ordering a bin of this sort is an unusual thing. OP is not gorging/guzzling/devouring large buns every day, or the size of this one would be nothing to be "staggered" over. And most people have agreed that as a once in a while thing, that sort of bun is fine and that yes, as a once in a while thing, they'd eat the lot.

It must be thoroughly miserable to be SO rigid in your eating that when faced with a bun of "staggering" proportions you photograph it and start a thread about only eating a quarter rather than just enjoying it, and making a mental note to lay off the biscuits later.

Is this a humble brag about what a tiny appetite you have, and that that’s why other people are fat?

Nail. Head.

kennycat · 28/06/2024 05:35

We go to a bakery on holiday in uk which does the biggest Belgian buns you’ve ever seen. Each time we take our traditional’bun next to head’ photo for comparison for the laughs. Then we cut up the bun and share our or save bits till the next day. Problem solved. If something is too big save till another time. What’s the issue? You got a bargain!

If as a grown adult you can only manage a few bites of food. You need to be going to the drs as that's not normal

Tamuchly · 28/06/2024 06:06

Well, I haven’t read the full thread but I’m definitely having a Chelsea bun later - haven’t had one in years! Oh, and I’m going to eat all of it 😉

All bath buns, great and small.

LazyGewl · 28/06/2024 07:02

Please stop size shaping the Bun. It is big and beautiful.

Barney16 · 28/06/2024 07:43

Aha, is it a oohhh, I can only eat a tiny portion of this enormous bun bun. Or is it a look at this huge bun that obviously only wild greedy made mad by a baked goods lune would eat bun? Or is it a I'm not bothered by the societal preoccupation with diet policing and to demonstrate I'm eating the whole bun bun. Or, perhaps, is it just a bun?
