… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

Dunno - been vegetarian for over 30 years.

Don't say that! Now you'll be accused of poultry shaming all the chicken eaters! 🙄

Elphame · 26/06/2024 19:29

Happy to send anyone the rest of the bun.

It was dry and not very nice. Too much cinnamon and not enough fruit and not in the least bit sticky either...

The pumpkin seed bread though was lush.

This is so offensive! People who aren't overweight are constantly being shamed on Mumsnet for eating like birds but if you dare to insinuate someone's fat it's considered rude. I'm going to dare to presume that most people making mean comments about 'competitive under eaters', 'eating like a bird', slim people only eat salad, 'skinny' people wouldn't do so in real life, wouldn't like to be judged about their own seemingly gargantuan appetites or the fact that they are indeed fat.

I'm sure some people will pile on and say 'I'm fat and proud', 'I'm fat but I eat nothing' but it doesn't change the fact that there are constant threads where posters shame people of a normal weight. This is an awful thread full of people who want to normalise eating too much. 68% of adults in the UK (22-23) are overweight or obese. This thread sums up why.

Most/all people on here aren't shaming OP for not wanting to eat that entire bun though they're criticising the blatant performative undereating.

There's nothing wrong with not wanting to eat all that. There's also nothing wrong with polishing the lot off with a cuppa if it's a treat. Ultimately it's nobody else's business. OP made it everyone's business though by literally making an attention-seeking thread about it on the internet. It's OP that made an issue out of it. Truth is if she hadn't complained about it nobody would care less how much of it she did/didn't eat

This is MN – people start threads for all sorts of nonsense! Why shouldn't OP be able to start a thread about the size of her buns?

Well I think it is apt to end with quality over quantity...

How much of the pumpkin seed totally low fat and low calorie bread did you eat? Hmm

WE'VE LOST SIGHT OF WHAT A NORMAL HEALTHY BUN SIZE SHOULD BE.

Hope it's a sugar free bun.

They're better with more fruit, more sugar, some icing to moisten it and, most of all, a large mug of tea. You just ate it wrong.

anunlikelyseahorse · 26/06/2024 20:38

Op fear not, slightly stale Chelsea's buns make lovely bread and butter pudding, which you bake, and then cut into portions and freeze, to be enjoyed in the gloomy months of autumn and winter.

Where exactly has OP has shamed others? She hasn't, and nor have others. If people are reacting as though they're being shamed it's because of their own insecurities with being overweight/obese and overeating, nothing to do with OP.

Oh come off it, we all have met people like the OP who use the whole “Oh it’s such a MASSIVE portion” to show off how dainty they are and how anyone who eats that much is - by inference - a bit of a pig. It’s fucking tedious.

FWIW, I’m the first to advocate the saying “Eat (real) food, mostly plants, not too much”. And I’ve been “skinny shamed” or “healthy food shamed” so many times in the past, not least when I was in my 20s and about 7 stone wringing wet. At a size 10 I’m not overweight now either, so my comments are not somehow justifying my body size.

But I’m also the first to advocate that the occasional - and that’s the operative word - blow out or treat is not going to do you any harm, whether it’s “eat what you want for a week as you’re on holiday” or a one-off Chelsea bun that’s six inches square. It doesn’t matter if it’s six feet square if it doesn’t form a regular part of your diet. No one should be shamed for the occasional treat. If it’s not occasional that’s a different issue.

Watch out. I've already been scolded for 'pissing about' with food by suggesting she does that.

llamajohn · 26/06/2024 21:27

You fat fuckers... I just looked at the photo of that bun, and I've just gained 2 stone, the kids are complaining of tummy ache they're so full, and th e neighbours just told me how much their son's rugby team enjoyed the left overs, and they're sorry, but they had to throw about half of it away.

voiceofastar · 26/06/2024 21:45

I wish I’d never opened this thread because I’ve been wanting a Chelsea bun all day. I don’t even like them, cinnamon is disgusting.

Sahara123 · 26/06/2024 21:48

GalileoHumpkins · 26/06/2024 16:07

Do people really piss about making bread and butter pudding out of half a Chelsea bun?

Well I might need to buy more Chelsea buns to make it worthwhile..

Soukmyfalafel · 26/06/2024 21:54

You didn't have to buy it.

You could freeze some of it.

JudgeJ · 26/06/2024 23:43

gardenmusic · 26/06/2024 16:05

But which crumpets did the study use? Some scrappy little thing, or a generously sized one?

I bought some Warbies' crumpets during the cold weather recently and they certainly seemed thicker than I remember as a child.

Nanaof1 · 27/06/2024 04:26

Butterflyfern · 26/06/2024 13:56

Exactly this. Eat your quarter now, freeze two quarters in portions and leave one for tomorrow that you can revive from being slightly stale in the microwave/oven

Or even Saran Wrap or Press 'n Seal would keep it fresh for a couple of days.

piscofrisco · 27/06/2024 06:39

I'd polish that off no bother. It's fine if you aren't having it every day.

CurlewKate · 27/06/2024 06:46

Freeze what you don't eat.

Or wrap what's left in foil then chuck it in a hot oven sometime over the next few days when you feel like some more.

Being "staggered" by a Chelsea bun seems a little over sensitive.

TooLateForRoses · 27/06/2024 06:58

I agree it's massive
