… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

Looks like a normal size Chelsea bun to me!

Misthios · 27/06/2024 08:06

Also @Elphame I think you've lost sight of what "cake" is. A Chelsea bun is enriched bread made with eggs, yeast and fruit. It's not "cake" which contains more fat or more butter and no yeast. It's more like a hot cross bun than a slice of carrot cake.

This is MN – people start threads for all sorts of nonsense! Why shouldn't OP be able to start a thread about the size of her buns?

This is better than the poo and vagina threads that people have been posting.

Not RTFT but LOL at sharing it.
I’m with Joey Tribiani on that one.

Janehasamane · 27/06/2024 08:52

I’m still highly amused by someone suggesting to share it out amongst the neighbours, 😂

brunettemic · 27/06/2024 08:53

I’m Praying for you at this difficult time.

Elphame · 27/06/2024 11:16

My recipe (from the days when I used to make them myself) contains rather a lot of butter, sugar and fruit and definitely falls into a cake definition.

You wouldn't want to toast it like you would a hot cross bun.

This one did taste like bread though - rather stale bread at that!

A Chelsea bun is definitely made with an enriched yeast dough. Bread, not cake.

It is 6 inches square and 3 inches deep!

Blimey, you have big teaspoons if that bun is six inches!

Washingupdone · 27/06/2024 17:54

I would have cut it into four and frozen the pieces I couldn’t to pig myself on. However, that being said the other piece(s) would be calling me all day.

CantFindMyMarbles · 27/06/2024 17:54

Looks delicious. I’d inhale that no problem.

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 27/06/2024 17:57

I was expecting it to be a picture of a small cake! I’d share it with my husband and maybe the kids…

cremebrulait · 27/06/2024 18:01

Typical chelsea bun. Eat half and save half OP. Drama solved.

DPotter · 27/06/2024 18:02

Chelsea buns have always been on the big side - certainly larger than a pain au raison for example

Devondumplin20 · 27/06/2024 18:06

Clearly you are not worthy of this cake. You are a wimp.

SH23B · 27/06/2024 18:07

That would last me at least a month.

Jeannie88 · 27/06/2024 18:08

Great value! When dieting I will cut it into quarters then proceed to eat the rest throughout the day lol. X

AnnieSnap · 27/06/2024 18:10

Elphame · 26/06/2024 13:41

£1.50

It’s excellent value and there is no rule that says you can’t share it, or eat some and take the rest home. I think your complaint is strange 🤷‍♀️

Judecb · 27/06/2024 18:12

It is big! Couldn't you freeze the rest?

FirconeTheCat · 27/06/2024 18:20

This is such a bizarre thread! I agree with what everyone’s saying. Me, I would just eat what I wanted and freeze or keep the rest for tomorrow.😄

ChaToilLeam · 27/06/2024 18:25

You are a grown up and can eat as much or as little
of it as you want, and save, share or chuck the rest.

hoggyhedge · 27/06/2024 18:35

crikey!

id never eat all that. It would feed me
and my kids for a fortnight

🙄

Boutonnière · 27/06/2024 18:39

That is very large for a Chelsea Bun - bargain !

For heaven's sake, it's not fat shaming anyone to point out that portion sizes have increased ridiculously over the years! It's a few years old now, but this graphic was in a newspaper article quoting Cambridge Uni experts on the subject and it showed how much more is dished up these days and how normalised bigger portions have become.

I find it hard to believe that anyone ate 3/4 of a crumpet in 1993! It would take more effort to cut the quarter off than to just eat it!

It's also a bit contradictory in relation to recent 'shrinkflation' - most crisps/chocolate bars etc are far smaller than they were a few years ago.

migrainagain · 27/06/2024 18:41

You dont need a spoon to eat it.
