Something about Taylor swift and her swifties really grind my gears, I don't see the hype.

And? All music artists have PR, every single one of them regardless of how talented they are or aren’t by MN standards.

Taylor is successful and rich, she can buy the best PR (although head of her PR is well known to be Tree Paine who has been with her for donkeys years, long before she became the current phenomenon she is).

Why is it a problem that she is doing what everyone else does, just better?

I agree, these threads are a boring, and quite pointless really - everyone knows there are plenty of people who don't get the hype or don't like the music. That's fair enough. I never liked Take That or the Spice Girls, but am also not the sort to be fanatical about anything - always thought I was a bit boring that way! I'm not a Swiftie either - my daughter is, a loyal fan of 11 years, despite only being 16. I have, as a result, heard lots of her music and it really is quite varied. What annoys me is when people claim she has no talent. Such a silly comment to make. Or "She can't sing" - clearly, she can. Not everyone has to be Aretha Franklin or Celine Dion. There are many respected musicians who rate her as a songwriter and performer and will happily say so. I came across a Twitter thread recently that had compiled just some of them.

okay so, to be clear, you are saying that Taylor Swifts PR is not better than anyone’s there is just more of it, so to follow from that every artist could be that successful if the just did more PR? Have you thought of sharing this wonderful insight with all of the PR agencies that celebrities pay so much money to, I’m sure they would love to know that it’s that easy.

Would it be helpful if all of us who enjoy Taylor Swift's music just admitted that we are shit, childish, cultish, taste-free losers, in pathetic thrall to corporatism, marketing and white feminism, and we can then end this tedious merry-go-round of pick-me threads once and for all?

Do those complaining about Taylor Swift fans being annoying know any Taylor Swift fans in real life or just judge them from what they've seen on SM or mumsnet?

I know at least 4 people personally, who went to the Eras tour, some with their teens and some with friends age range between 30 to 50+. None are who I would describe as fanatical or annoying.

I've mentioned this on another thread but I was surprised and impressed by how many members of my running club knew so many of her song titles, as a result of another member- a male in his 30s if that makes a difference, announcing that he was no longer attending a race because he was going to see Taylor Swift instead over WhatsApp.

Everyone who posted afterwards were supportive and excited for him, and couldn't help posting references thatbit became quite competitive!

OK, fans can be deluded and believe their idol can do no wrong, which is not terribly healthy. But TS seems to have more than her fair share of anti-fans, who are strongly invested in her not being amazing, and that's something I don't really understand. I mean, following a pop star is a hobby, not one I've ever been into, can cost a fair bit of money, but mainly harmless unless it goes with a heavy drug scene or they have particularly nasty lyrics, violent or paedophilic tendencies (if anyone would like to accuse Swift of any of these, evidence please). Slagging off the pop star and anyone who likes them is cheaper, but otherwise a bit of a negative hobby if you ask me. Have you tried crochet? You could make a sampler with "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT" perhaps... or some kittens.

I don't disagree that some can be fanatical about her, but the ones I know are most definitely not. It is no different to other artists and their fandom.

Yes yes seen those news reports of wild Taylor swift fans wearing cowboy hats on the rampage at every city. Causing damage to property, fights, locking people in bars whilst they perform bad versions of Love Story on Karaoke. And of course they're mostly girls and women. Out on their own, unchaperoned. The mind boggles.

Yep, I can't stand her, but that's not my issue. My issue is those who idolise her to the point of cult status, and jump on anyone who dares express a different view.

So please do clarify your point as I am interested in how stating that an artist is successful not because they have better PR than those less successful they just have more of it does not equate to saying that other artists could also be more successful if they just had more PR (irrespective of the quality of it).

To be fair the joke was based on a real point. With football games and some artists comes antisocial behaviour etc and I can understand why that would make someone feel passionate about it. The sex pistols for example I'm sure got a lot of people saying they hated them and everything they stood for. I'm happy to listen to someone's points and could imagine some good reasons why someone might hate them, but hating Taylor Swift when you've got the Kardashians buying babies and encouraging plastic surgery, Will Smith Assaulting people on stage, Tom Cruise and his actual cult, Kayne's crazyness and Brad Pitts abuse is quite baffling to me.
It's odd to expend this much time on hating someone because they have a pop persona and a real life and keep them somewhat separate. Which seems to be your main gripe, that and she is not carrying out humanitarian work on top of full time pop star.
