Something about Taylor swift and her swifties really grind my gears, I don't see the hype.

I dont find them annoying so much as confusing. She is just a singer Shes ok, but I find her average, as far as singers go. She doesn't really stand for anything or have any sort of message, as far as I can see

I agree, I think her success is the result of amazing marketing/ publicity on SM.

ImFrightenedAuntieEm · 27/06/2024 09:09

@Alwaysthesun24 importantly, she definitely doesn't empower all women.

What do you mean?

ImFrightenedAuntieEm · 27/06/2024 09:15

Well done you mean women the cunty kinds or ones with penises for a start.

Plus many many years of hard work

For me its anyone who becomes obsessed with things/people. Swifties all seem to be mega fans, not just 'oh yeah, I like her songs', and I've never understood that and find it quite immature in grown ups. Not just about Taylor Swifts, but anything

What about trainspotters?

Basically it’s a fairly harmless interest, and it’s something to bond over.

There’s a lot worse things to have an interest in 🥴

Of course.
Hatd work from her and from the PR teams.

I mean trainspotters aren't all over the media, SM etc.
They also don't call non-trainspotters haters.

Eh?

ImFrightenedAuntieEm · 27/06/2024 09:25

Well she's a pop star, not a woman's empowerment advocate, so I'd assume to say she doesn't empower all women you have some detail to add, like she funds sex trafficking or supports the dismantling or human rights.

I assume it's something more than her songs don't appeal to you personally therefore she doesn't empower all women.

When you make a bold statement like that usually people like to hear the evidence

Holidaaaaay · 27/06/2024 09:28

Alwaysthesun24 · 27/06/2024 08:57

Partly because her PR have made sure she's everywhere.

But why does it have an affect? I can't say I ever think about her fans and whether they irritate me or not.

Lots of people say 'TS empowers women'. I was simply pointing out that isn't true and it's another reason her fans are a bit tiresome.
There's no more to it.

The constant 'haters gonna hate' narrative is slightly tiresome.

So you have nothing. I would say she empowers women in the following ways, but feel free to disagree

She provides a good role model that a woman can succeed without selling her sexuality. Some pop star videos verge on soft porn. Hers never do.

The food bank donation will empower women in a very real way to help them in poverty

Her songs speak about the female experience and don't centre the male experience. This is why she has many female fans. Topics including death, motherhood, bullying and of course, fuck boys.

Personally I have found her song called Ronan and soon you'll be better, Marjorie very haunting and somewhat empowering. They don't make me feel like I have to be a 'fighter' and beat cancer. They hold space for me to feel not ok with it. (I am not fully diagnosed yet but on the ridiculous slow NHS pathway. Joy!)

HandsDown84 · 27/06/2024 09:44

She also sued for sexual harassment for 1 dollar so nobody could say she did it for money.

Anyotherdude · 27/06/2024 09:45

Nope. On the never-ending list of things that annoy me, neither Taylor Swift, nor her fans, have managed to get on it!

I'm not denying she appears to do things that might empower some women. My issue is with the blanket 'empowers women'. Folk need to enjoy her music without making out she's some hero. As for donating to a food bank, millions of people do that every single day, just not as part of a massive PR machine.
I do wish you well on your diagnosis/journey - loads of amazing female scientists and doctors will be fighting with you. If music helps you through it then that's great.

But again her job is not female empowerment officer. Why do you require her to do more than anyone else? I'd like to see figures to show you hold all pop stars, Dua Lips, Kanye West etc to this standard.
And yes, the doctors I'm sure will help but that's literally their job. She could write about kissing and boys but she chose to make herself vulnerable and write about the effect of cancer on people's lives.

She's been a damn sight more empowering than my female GP who ignored my symptoms and missed my cancer btw lol.

FungusMcEyebrow · 27/06/2024 10:00

I have no feelings about TS whatsoever but I marvel at her PR machine. Last time she played in my city there were thousands of free tickets being handed out to fill the stadium and this time it’s like the second coming of Christ.
She has an incredible marketing team.

I'm not saying she SHOULD empower anybody - I'm saying that lots of fans say she DOES 'empower women' , and also that she can do no wrong!
A more realistic approach would be to accept that while they find her talented/inspiring/empowering, she is also a human with faults and a certain degree of privilege, and that others might not feel so inspired or enpowered by her.
Other female stars generally aren't put on such a high pedestal as she is, and folk aren't called 'haters' for not enjoying her music.
I'm sorry your doctor is letting you down, but in general female scientists and doctors and nurses (my bad for forgetting nurses last time, they do so much) do more to empower cancer victims than pop stars ever will. Of course music can help get us through hard times, such as illness, and I'm glad it helps.

(Use of CAPS because my bold won't work on phone, not shouting).

ImFrightenedAuntieEm · 27/06/2024 10:19

Perhaps people aren't putting her on a pedestal. Perhaps they just react to the concrete things she does and it resonates with them and they think it's an empowering thing to do. Perhaps if you actually asked for details rather than using your blanket 'shes not empowering 'folks'. You might find the reasons.

You have a stance that is really based more on stubborn dislike than evidence. Here's some evidence for you. I suggest you maybe find out a bit about her so you can actually engage in what you find so lacking.

Please do not mansplain how great nurses and doctors are to a failed cancer patient. It's unhelpful. And I have plenty of evidence to show your statement regarding nurses and doctors being mostly wonderful is hogwash. Some are great, but no, not all by a long stretch. There's the female nurse who wanted me to take a two hour train away from my breastfed baby when I was I. Hospital with her. Or there's the male midwife who told me if I had a shower at home ten minutes away from the hospital whilst my husband watched the baby he'd report me for post natal depression. It's a bug not a feature. Go clap a pan.

The Heartbreaking True Story Behind Taylor Swift's "Ronan"

Ronan is one of Taylor Swift's saddest songs and it's based on the blog of Maya Thompson, whose son Ronan died of cancer in 2011 before his 4th birthday.

Non-trainspotters don’t tend to make not enjoying spotting trains a key part of their personality or spend a lot of time on the internet saying “trains are over rated, they’re not all that, I don’t see the attraction” and act morally and intellectually superior for not being interested.

Not being a TS fan isn't a key part of most folks personality either tbh.
Some folk just wonder why SOME of her fanbase is so cult like and so taken in by the clearly see through PR moves.

ImFrightenedAuntieEm · 27/06/2024 10:25

What a bitter cynical attitude.

Yes I'm sure you are so much cleverer than everyone else on the subject and knows in depth about the subject. You just choose to not engage with actual facts because reasons.

You get back to your folk and continue to demonstrate how cool you are
