Taylor swift fans annoy me

Anyone else?

Something about Taylor swift and her swifties really grind my gears, I don't see the hype.

I'm starting to think disliking Taylor Swift is the new veganism, whereby you must tell everyone your thoughts about it all the time! 🙄

It baffles me that people feel the need to disparage her and her fans so frequently for seemingly no reason. If you don't like her, then just move along, focus on the music you do like! Why on earth would anyone else care what Random McNobodyface thinks? It's not edgy or cool, its just incredibly boring and unnecessary.

I'm not a Swiftie, won't be going to the tour, have no strong feelings about her at all but the constant whining and negativity is bizarre.

Ontopofthesunset · 26/06/2024 15:16

I really don't think it's misogyny. I think it's just bafflement when you can't quite understand why someone is so successful, and why there seems to be such extraordinary fervour about her tour. And it's great that she is successful, and great that she seems to be a good role model. But there have been loads of successful pop musicians over the years, many of whom were musically more distinctive or genre changing than Taylor Swift.

I freely admit I am old and my kids are into more indie rock. I couldn't name a single TS song and have listened to a few this week after seeing all the news reports and threads about her. They were fine, just very generic pop music. I can't remember a single one I listened to. But I don't claim to have particularly good musical taste; I like Elton John and Billy Joel along with Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen. I'm a lover of the old balladeer at heart.

Why let something you're not even involved in bother you? I'm not a swifty but I don't engage with the community so have no real idea what her fans act like. Apart from giving friendship bracelets to each other 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'm a metal head and was annoyed at Dave Grohl making shitty comments about her playing live tbh, punching down is a huge turn off.

Edited

I agree, and also love and understand your username @HaddawayAndShite 😁
I really don't know much about her, I don't take that much notice of her music apart from thinking it's ok, but I do see that she seems to make people happy. Also saw the lovely story about her donation to Cardiff foodbank today. All of this, as a fellow metalhead, makes me love her whether I want to or not!

JanglingJack · 26/06/2024 15:29

I remember when she was pure country music. Wasn't fussed.
I then remembered when she crossed over.
Wasn't fussed.

She's everywhere now - still not fussed.

Am not a Taylor Swift fan though I have a daughter who is. I will be going to the concert with her - she said I will love it. I will report back but surely being with 80 odd thousand happy people that's got to be quite infectious. It's all fun, and I love all the outfits, friendships and just in this world of doom and gloom it's lovely to have something that is joyous.

HandsDown84 · 26/06/2024 15:41

As I said on another thread - she's the 8th bestselling artist of all time. The hype is not that surprising.

EcoChica1980 · 26/06/2024 15:48

I mean it's a generalisation but yes they do, in general, seem very annoying.

And if you take the piss out of her at all they respond as if you've said something problematic, rather than simply taking the piss out of a pop star - which is half the fun of pop music anyway.

Realduchymarmalade · 26/06/2024 15:58

I honestly don’t know a single person that mentions her in real life. Have four DC aged 12-5. Many friends and family across a wide variety of society. Never hear her mentioned. But everytime I open up Instagram or mumsnet there is something about her. Bizarre. I genuinely couldn’t even name one of her songs, I’m 36, but thats probably only because I don’t listen to the radio. I don’t get the snobbery against her, I wouldn’t judge someone for liking her but I probably would judge someone over the age of 18 who was a dazzled super fan twittering on about her, I guess I’d just think they were a bit dim and immature for their age - harmless enough though, not deserving of open disdain or derision. But I have never heard anyone mention her.

Redcrayons · 26/06/2024 16:28

I love her but I think some of corners of her fan base are completely insane.

My dc are London, in their 20’s and have probably between them about 20 friends who have been, more who applied and are on waitlists. It’s not a mystery, it’s a tribe- that age, slightly alternative ie nose rings not acrylics, one if any tattoos, long hair rather than extensions. They’re all 3rd sector workers.

It's pop music hype like Elvis, The Beatles, The Bay City Rollers, Abba, Adam Ant, Oasis, Take That, One Direction.

Acts so over hyped that the media has bought into the story and report it as news...it will end and her legacy ie will she be Elvis or the rollers, Oasis or Adam Ant? Will be left to prove if she's a mega talent or just a good pop act

I agree that some Swifties take it to extremes, but the thing that frustrates me about posts like this is that it ignores the fact that she has already been around for EIGHTEEN years. She has released 11 albums so far. She's won something like 14 Grammys. She's hardly a flash in the pan who still needs to pay her dues and prove herself.

And, I know plenty of people will disagree with me (and that's fine) but it's really not just 'disposable pop music'. Listen to eg: 'Ivy', 'Cowboy Like Me', 'Woulda Coulda Shoulda', or 'The Prophecy' (other songs are available) and tell me with a straight face that you consider them 'generic mediocre pop'. I'm not saying you'll fall in love with them, but the lack of credit she gets for songwriting chops 'grinds my gears' too.

Yes! People act like she popped up out of nowhere in the late 2010s like Dua Lipa.

This is where she sits in all-time sales. Good company.

Sendinsanity · 26/06/2024 20:46

I've enjoyed her music since I was a teen and my 9YO is obsessed. We saw her at Wembley this weekend. The other fans/swifties blew me away with how they treated my 9YO. Swapping bracelets, chatting etc. It was lovely and a lovely first concert.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 26/06/2024 21:02

Sorry, obviously I meant Would've Could've Should've - Taylor would never stand for such sloppy writing 😂

I love so many of her songs too. All of her albums have a different feel too. So if you didn't like 1989 or Red or Reputation or Evermore or Midnights or TTPD, then wow, that is a seriously high level of commitment to not liking Taylor Swift.

LawlorsNaa · 26/06/2024 21:08

Are you in the UK, @MumofHennHals?
Taylor’s Eras Tour brought £1BILLION into your economy.
Put that into your gears and grind it.

Most people whining about how they don't underrrrrstttaaaaaand have only ever heard Shake It Off or Blank Space.

Both of which, for the record, are fantastic, joyful, clever pop songs, but hardly reflective of the range and scope of her songwriting.

But, apparently we're all idiots, so....I guess we should bow down the proper grown-ups and their indie records that are much cooler than ours...

Exactly ‘good pop stars’ are people like Britney Spears who make catchy pop songs and do amazing dance routines. Taylor writes her own music, plays instruments and sings live.

Her songs aren’t disposable since there are stadiums full of people singing along with never released tracks on albums that came out years and years ago.

Loads of the artists hailed as being amazing on this thread have been full of praise for her including Bruce Springsteen who has highly praised her song writing.

My 7 year old loves ‘Speak Now’ which was released 14 odd years ago and we went to eras as her first ever concert which was amazing to take such a young child to because she was pretty much glitter from head to toe, everyone told her how lovely she looked and traded bracelets with her, she sang along with every song for 3.5 hours, a show that was able to be that long due to Taylor’s massive back catalogue of songs. Let’s face it she could play double that time and still probably not get through them all (and fans would still go watch).

Alwaysthesun24 · 27/06/2024 08:10

I can't stand anything about TS.
I can't stand the cult fans who over hype her apparent good qualities and refuse to listen to the real negatives. I hate folk making out she's groundbreaking regarding female empowerment - she's not the first to empower women, and, importantly, she definitely doesn't empower all women.

That said - I have no issue with folk enjoying themselves at a concert or feeling a little joy in their lives. We all enjoy different things. Crack on if you enjoy her music!

ssd · 27/06/2024 08:12

I don't get the fuss at all but if it makes people happy then I'm all for it.

Partly because her PR have made sure she's everywhere.
