AIBU to go to a hen party but not dress up for the theme?

It's a theme I own nothing for already and not keen to splurge on fast fashion for an outfit and accessories that I will never use again. Keen to attend the event though and paid for it already. WWYD?

What's the theme? Surely there's something cheap you can get online, even if it's only a hat or similar.

Seems a bit mis to not do anything related to it.

PickledPurplePickle · 24/06/2024 10:08

I’d go

What is the theme? Can you make something from what you already have?

CuteCillian · 24/06/2024 10:11

If the theme is a colour, or 'a wacky hat' etc. you will look odd on the photos if you are the only one not joining in. Can find something that gives a nod to the theme. Charity shop?

EmBear91 · 24/06/2024 10:11

There is always a cheap way of working to a theme. What is it? I would make the effort personally.

DailyMailHater · 24/06/2024 10:11

I have often got things to fit a theme in a charity shop, and once worn if something you won’t wear again then donate back to charity shop they benefit twice then 🙂

LibbsLou · 24/06/2024 10:13

I mean you'll stand out, it's up to you. I wouldnt, I'd get the dress up with everyone else.

YouveGotAFastCar · 24/06/2024 10:14

Use a charity shop or whatever.

You risk a weird atmosphere in the group if you go but don’t comply with the theme, and you may well feel awkward if you’re the only one who doesn’t. It’ll look to other people and in photos as if you weren’t really invited, or didn’t get the memo.

There’s almost always a cheap and easy way to show willing!

If you really don’t want to do that, I’d decline the invite.

wickerpram · 24/06/2024 10:14

Shop on Vinted and then sell it on afterwards

Ponoka7 · 24/06/2024 10:14

You are going to feel out of place. You need to have a go at the theme, or not go.

SpikeyDee · 24/06/2024 10:15

Unless it’s a ridiculous theme then I think YABU. It’ll look odd with one person not doing it and comes across as a bit mean spirited.

drawnfrommemory · 24/06/2024 10:16

Do a single accessory and a neutral outfit if you don't want to go all out.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/06/2024 10:18

If you've agreed to go to a themed hen do then you need to participate in whatever that theme is

Primefungus · 24/06/2024 10:19

Did you know it had a theme when you agreed to go and pay? If so then it's a bit off to not dress up. If it was added afterwards then I can see why you don't want to, and i wouldn't. Honestly no one looks at photos afterwards anyway do they? Who cares, jt us your presence they should want.

ColourMeBlue · 24/06/2024 10:19

Ah come on,we need to know the theme😂 We could have some storming ideas of something you could wear 😊

faffadoodledo · 24/06/2024 10:20

Please tell us the theme!

DisgruntledPelican · 24/06/2024 10:25

Not a problem - is the bride the type of nightmare woman who would kick off if you don’t stick to the theme?

I went to a Disney princess themed hen party once (😒) when I was the oldest and fattest one there & there was no way I was going to dress as sexy Elsa/Belle/Pocahontas anyway (even if I hadn’t been heavily eye-rolling at the concept… 🫣) So I bought a cheap children’s tiara from the Disney store and wore that with a nice dress and let everyone else have their fun. The bride cared not one bit because she wanted my company and we like each other and we’re both normal adults.

welshweasel · 24/06/2024 10:26

I would tell us the theme and let us sort you an outfit!!

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 24/06/2024 10:26

I once went to a hen do where the theme for the first night was just good old fashioned wear black, and the bride will wear white. The most basic theme possible.
Someone wore khaki green. Sticks out like a sore thumb in photos.
Actually, she was a mardy prick the whole time so really it was just a sign of things to come.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 24/06/2024 10:43

Tell us the theme and you'll get some ideas! I got something from a charity shop and made it fit the theme recently.. Just a nod to it will do.

MidnightPatrol · 24/06/2024 10:44

Time to ‘lean in’ OP.

Avatartar · 24/06/2024 10:49

Charity shop

Cliedi · 24/06/2024 10:50

We’re going to need to know the theme! Perhaps you can think outside the box and be able to fit into it anyway.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 24/06/2024 10:56

Someone came to my hen and did the same as you.

It couldn't have been easier - plain black top, plain black bottoms.

I didn't care much more than how odd it was because I was happy she was there, but it did look strange.

It's not like she didn't have anything as she wore it the following day so were 🤨

You must have something similar or halfway there. Or borrow something?

pontipinemum · 24/06/2024 10:58

No you don't have to go full out 'into the theme' but as others have said tell us the theme and we can help you pic something tiny.

I went very last minute to a monopoly theme party. I wrote a card with 'community' and tucked it into my bra strap. I was 19 so not sure I'd do that now! But you see what I mean you don't need to buy a special outfit to participate.

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/06/2024 11:00

I agree with the silly hat suggestions
