AIBU to go to a hen party but not dress up for the theme?

It's a theme I own nothing for already and not keen to splurge on fast fashion for an outfit and accessories that I will never use again. Keen to attend the event though and paid for it already. WWYD?

I can’t bear to be dictated to like this. But I’m a grumpy cow 🐮 😀

She could be a rebel and wear something with cow print 🐄

I could do cowgirl in a heart beat... its half my wardrobe and it all came from charity shops.

Its basically just boot cut or flared jeans or denim shorts with a t-shirt
or
a dress

...and then pair those with a shirt/denim/leather jacket and boots (cowboy boots, ankle boots, stiletto knee highs, you can ever rock army boots with the look)

Anything denim, plaid or leather/suede is good. Tassels are instantly 'cowgirl' when added if you can get them and maybe the odd rhinestone but not needed. Belts are good accessories to really pull the look. Brown is an intrinsically 'cowgirl' colour, you can wear black but brown will be more obvious for country.

For a hen do as its a 'dressy' event, I would likely go the 'dress' route... some example of different 'cowgirl' styles that aren't 'costumes':

A knee length dress (bodycon, skater, hankey doesn't really matter) with brown boots (any kind) and a denim jacket then with a waist belt should be easy to source in charity shops and is pretty much all thats needed.

Try to stick to more earthy tones unless its plaid which can be more playful in bright pinks, reds and blues etc...

Bootcut Jean, checked shirt and if you don’t want to wear boots just wear whatever footwear you feel comfortable in. Neckerchief type thingy from a piece of fabric. Then you just need a hat. Most of that I already have anyway/would wear again.

Black jeans, black top, colourful bandana, sparkly Stetson, toy gun and belt, big buckle belt,..jacket or waistcoat with fringing

RampantIvy · 27/06/2024 14:13

I wouldn't be buying a fringed jacket or waistcoat to wear just once.

A few years ago a stitched fringes the sort you'd buy by the meter in Hobby craft to a demin shirt.
And removed them when I no longer needed to be Calamity Jane!

@ncob not unreasonable but you'll look a bit of a misery. What's the theme? Can you not get stuff together even if it means charity shop or borrow something?x

Needanewname42 · 27/06/2024 16:32

@Outofmydepth3
Read the Ops posts the theme is cow girl so not that hard without spending silly money.
Checked shirt & jeans or leggings with boots 👢
Bandana / head scarf / scout neckie

The only thing that might need an amazon order is a cowgirl hat.

There are worse themes out there.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/06/2024 16:44

Yes, cow print or white outfit with black material 'splodges' tacked on.

Essential to add an inflated rubber glove as an udder!

@Janiie

Why must the OP have a pair of denim shorts?

Not trying to be difficult, but I don't own any shorts at all, denim or otherwise. Likewise I don't own any checked shirts as I don't wear shirts either.

I didn't go to a hen party years ago because we were told to wear black only. I don't wear black clothes either, and I couldn't afford to buy a new outfit, never to wear it again.

Same here. No jeans, shorts, or checkered anything. It's not a given.

RampantIvy · 28/06/2024 16:16

I don't wear shorts out in public. The back garden, yes, but not out.

I do maybe own the odd pair of denim shorts at the back of my wardrobe that I bought on a whim but they likely don't fit me as I'm pear shaped and shorts look awful on me.

I also don't really wear plaid either as its not my 'pattern', straight lines in general doesn't do it for me pattern wise although I have seen other people rock plaid.

Both this things are true despite the fact 'country/cowgirl' is my go to daily look lol.

Cowgirls theme;
grab your hubby’s checked shirt/any random shirt that’s too big for you. Put it over a white tshirt and if you feel brave Tie a knot in the front
wear denim jeans or shorts
Brown boots (not linedancing but just regular boots, if not something sparkly)
pair of hooped earrings (extra bonus if they’re sparkly)
cowboy hat (I have a pink one in the cupboard because I do musical theatre on the side but if you don’t have one, just “jack it up to Jesus” - think Dolly Parton hair) you could even go really silly and grab a mini cowboy hat from Amazon or somewhere (I think Claire’s has them in the 5 for £10 sale)
a hanky or bandana around the neck/waist.
bingo.
I have a fully “Dolly Parton” outfit (9 to 5) but it’s easy to do cowgirl!
