AIBU to go to a hen party but not dress up for the theme?

It's a theme I own nothing for already and not keen to splurge on fast fashion for an outfit and accessories that I will never use again. Keen to attend the event though and paid for it already. WWYD?

Post on your local Buy Nothing Facebook group – most are great for this kind of thing. Or download the Olio app. People are always offloading fancy dress, or will happily give it away if you put a request out.

HiddenBooks · 24/06/2024 12:25

Take a look at Facebook Marketplace. Every time I think I need to buy something that I'm not going to need to use often, I look on there and someone nearby is usually selling something appropriate. Even if it's fast fashion or cheap items, it's better to re-use than buy new.

ExtraOnions · 24/06/2024 12:31

EBay .. always loads of clothes on there. Plus message out to friends .. you would be suprised at how many people have a fancy dress Stetson

BebbanburgIsMine · 24/06/2024 12:32

@Janiie

Why must the OP have a pair of denim shorts?

Not trying to be difficult, but I don't own any shorts at all, denim or otherwise. Likewise I don't own any checked shirts as I don't wear shirts either.

I didn't go to a hen party years ago because we were told to wear black only. I don't wear black clothes either, and I couldn't afford to buy a new outfit, never to wear it again.

CatMumSlave · 24/06/2024 12:36

Your head can't be that unusually small or unusually large can it?

pinkyspromises · 24/06/2024 12:36

Just go on amazon and order cow girl accessories

Neck scarf, hat. Where it round your neck if your head isn't "mainstream "

Jeans, t shirt and flip flops

Straight skirt, any colour. If it’s going to be scrapped afterwards fringe the hem with scissors.. t shirt or denim shirt. Some sort of neckerchief scarf — just a square of fabric folded will do though charity shops always have scarves.
Kids cowboy type hat, just wear it hanging by the elastic.
Trainers. Who looks at your feet and you’ll be comfortable.

Cliedi · 24/06/2024 12:45

Oh just buy a hat and that’s all you need to do. Bonus if you have anything fringed, denim , suede or checked but really just wear something fairly plain with a cheap cowboy hat.

wonderwooman · 24/06/2024 12:55

For more glam, do you have a gingham/plaid dress which you could team with a leather belt - or skirt which you can pair with a pretty top & belt? Forgo the cowboy hat and wear a neckerchief/bandana in your hair instead? Any boots could go with this. Or something like this...Cowgirl costume

Ifthisiswheretheworldisheadingcountmeout · 24/06/2024 12:56

Vinted? Jeans/denim skirt, shirt tucked in or tied in the middle (extra points for checked), triangle of material around your neck as a bandana scarf type thing, legit any boots....even without a hat that's something! Could you put your hair in braids with ribbons like this?

I'm another one who is shamelessly curious as to what you mean by not being able to order a hat online. Do you have an inordinately small or big head? That wouldn't be accommodated by buying a child's size or a large size?

Ifthisiswheretheworldisheadingcountmeout · 24/06/2024 12:58

Make yourself a hat? https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=dLhx-BMMx6U

Peonies12 · 24/06/2024 12:59

If you share the theme perhaps people can help with ideas, you can borrow something or look on Vinted. I personally think if you’re choosing to attend an event like a hen, you have to make some effort

Universalrehearsal · 24/06/2024 13:00

I'd wear jeans, any old shoes, a big checked shirt from the men's section of the charity shop, and a cowboy hat from Amazon for £11

Christine1998 · 24/06/2024 13:02

I’d go for a denim dress as has been suggested or a denim skirt, white Broderie anglaise top (i’ve just bought a shirt from new look and a top from next) you can wear all these again, if you don’t want to buy cowboy boots, have you got any tan boots? I’d agree with vinted if you have time.

AhBiscuits · 24/06/2024 13:02

Just wear jeans, a blouse your already own and buy a red bandana to wear round your neck done.

Scully01 · 24/06/2024 13:06

I've done this, the theme was burlesque and I thought I'm not going out in underwear, so I just wore a vintage style dress instead. I hate themes 😂 I think if you're in a good mood and in the party spirit then it doesn't matter what you're wearing.

Mintchocco · 24/06/2024 13:13

brides name doesn't begin with a H by any chance 🤔

FlippityFloppityFlump · 24/06/2024 13:15

If you haven't got denim shorts and a checked shirt then could go sheriff style and wear black skinny jeans, black shirt (and waistcoat if poss), make a black necker out of some fabric. Then make or buy a sheriff's badge.

Go on FB market place or your local FB pages and ask if anyone has a cowboy hat (preferably black)

Workawayxx · 24/06/2024 13:17

If you wear sun hats you could get a Stetson style one if you’d wear it again. Something like this: link. With whatever denim you have eg jeans.

or just look on Vinted. I’d just go with one “cowgirl” piece (boots, hat or checked shirt for example) and pair with any basics you already have - jeans, white t-shirt etc.

My DD's hen do was cowboy theme. She purchased a lot 2nd hand and everything afterwards was sold on Vinted. Have you tried there? Also Shein and Temu have cowboy earrings.

pinkyspromises · 24/06/2024 13:18

Of sll the shitty themes, this is actually quite easy

chaosmaker · 24/06/2024 13:24

Could you hire fancy dress?

TheKingCobraIsNotStrictlySpeakingACobra · 24/06/2024 13:27

I'd 100% just buy a cowbody hat online and wear what you want with it. Bedazzle it if you have to.

Vinted might be a good option for clothing too
