To be absolutely looking forward to this Tory wipeout

It isn't just me I'm sure but I am totally gleeful at this anticipated annihilation of the Tory party. I did vote Tory last time. But absolutely can't wait to see them routed. They've been awful. How could they have Liz Truss happen. She should have been chucked out the party.

Labour are my choice of govt. but I am a bit nervous about a massive majority, as I think a strong opposition is good for democracy, and scrutiny of laws. Hopefully the smaller regional parties will also play a strong role in the incoming parliament.

AmusedMaker · 20/06/2024 07:32

It happens every time a party has been in power for years, people get fed up & bored with them.
people will be happy to see the back of Labour after a couple of terms.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 20/06/2024 07:33

I’ve been around long enough to know never count your chickens.

OrangeCrushes · 20/06/2024 07:33

I have said YABU because it's not a sure thing. Remember the Brexit vote?

Every time a party has been in power for years they lose.

But not on this scale.

Take a look around you at how the Tory campaign is going. Even they are admitting they're going to lose really badly.

This is nothing like the Brexit vote.

ilovesooty · 20/06/2024 07:38

I would like to see the Tories sufficiently annihilated for the Lib Dems to be the official Opposition, but realistically that's unlikely.

There are certainly some individual Tory MPs who I shall be delighted to see lose their seats.

I don't disagree. But watching the late news last night Tories are left with 50 or so Mps. But polls have been wrong before. Can't see the party even surviving a momentous defeat like this. Some were even saying the party would have to reform and rename themselves. But they did seem to be getting a bit carried away.

Labour might not even win, let alone a Tory wipeout.

Its not over until 10pm on the 4th July.

But yes if it happens, i'll be very happy, i'd like to see the Con's not win a single seat, they do not deserve any, just a bunch of crooks.

They've wrecked the country, nothing works & we may never recover from what they done.

Absolutely this. I've been voting in GE for nearly 50 years.

Don't get your hopes up too much - Labour will face a similar wipe-out in their turn, and around it all goes again.

The only thing I'm Absolutely Certain of is that Lib Dems will never, ever, win a GE.

Brexit polling was actually accurate, Remain, leading up to the vote in 2016, never had much of a lead, it was within the margin of error i.e 3 or 4%.

Cameron believed his own BS.

rosie1959 · 20/06/2024 07:43

What I find more disconcerting in my view is that Labour are not going to win this election because they are so wonderfully inspiring and are coming up with incredible policies but because the Conservatives have been ineffective.

Labour had their worst defeat for 75 years, a "wipeout" but they still got over 200 seats.

IF the tories drop below 100, that will be far less than what we normally call a wipe out.

The LibDems used to be in Governt (as the Liberal Party) they could again, nothing is impossible, not this GE true but the next one - why not?

CassandraWebb · 20/06/2024 07:49

My expected enjoyment has been rather eclipsed by the momentum the Reform are getting - deeply concerning.

UtterlyOtterly · 20/06/2024 07:50

Labour are likely to win but only because the Tories are crap.

Wouldn't it be good to live in a country where people voted in a party because they believed in them rather than to oust the opposition.

Not seen a single Labour poster up round here though. Mostly LibDem, a few Tory, one or two Green and an Independant.

I agree with this, Farage not winning a seat would be the cherry on the cake for me

This, unfortunately.

Polls said Hilary Clinton would beat Trump and that Remain would win the Brexit vote.

pizzaHeart · 20/06/2024 07:55

I’m not counting my chickens yet. As people are saying - there are a lot of quiet tories out there and I do remember Brexit vote.
Also we are in absolute hole after Tories being 14 years in power, after all these lies, scandals, contracts to their mates and stupid decisions ( like Liz Truss’s ) As his main achievement Rishi Sunak cites that he gave people money to furlough them during pandemic. But he gave them our money, now we have to pay higher taxes to pay it off, tolerate cuts to public services, our national debt is astronomical. So whoever will come next ( I sincerely hope it will be Labour) they won’t be able to produce a miracle, I don’t envy them .

CassandraWebb · 20/06/2024 07:55

People who understand how politics and government work will also understand that it really wouldn't be healthy for there not to be a decent bit of opposition in parliament. Not that I will vote Tory at present but it is really infuriating that they have been so arrogant in power that they are facing this level of wipeout. Partly because of the power going to reform instead, partly because there are some decent backbench Tories who would have been experienced and able to be a check and balance in parliament.

Exactly. I'm genuinely baffled that people are so gleeful at the prospect of a Labour win.

Wait and see what they will do to the country. It won't be pretty.

MotherofChaosandDestruction · 20/06/2024 08:20

My concern like pp is reform gaining momentum and without the stories pushing even further right with populist policies.

People are poor, tired and very influenced by social media, fake news and the media. People feel ignored and are blaming others such as immigrants for their woes because no one has actually tackled inequality, the ever rising cost of living and poor wages.

I am still hearing how people don't actually like labour so I am worried that reform are going to gain quite a few seats as we push right much like a lot of Europe.

MotherofChaosandDestruction · 20/06/2024 08:22

So no, not looking forward to the total wipeout as I think something much worse will replace them as opposition. I am happy that they are going to be out of power.

Labour had been in power for 13 years in 2010 and weren't wiped out at the GE. They had far many more seats than this Tory government is predicted to get, or than the Tories had in '97

Alwaysthesun24 · 20/06/2024 08:23

I'm not sure those who've been stupid enough to vote for them in the past won't be stupid enough to vote for them again.

flossie232 · 20/06/2024 08:25

There are plenty of die hard Tory voters around here who will vote for them regardless. They could do literally and they'd still vote because they are 'Tory families' and would simply never do anything different. It's tragic.

I am more positive this time but i won't believe it until I see it. I've been disappointed too many times now.
