To be absolutely looking forward to this Tory wipeout

It isn't just me I'm sure but I am totally gleeful at this anticipated annihilation of the Tory party. I did vote Tory last time. But absolutely can't wait to see them routed. They've been awful. How could they have Liz Truss happen. She should have been chucked out the party.

It happens every time a party has been in power for years, people get fed up & bored with them.
people will be happy to see the back of Labour after a couple of terms.

This. Remember New Labour in 97? Exactly the same feeling sweeping the country. Be careful what you wish for!

Just listening to Radio 4 Matthew Pennicuik, shadow minister for housing, Is explaining how they can’t stop right to buy of council houses and why they can’t sort out council taxes which are based on 199? Valuations - I don’t expect much to change with Labour

There are plenty of die hard Tory voters around here who will vote for them regardless. They could do literally and they'd still vote because they are 'Tory families' and would simply never do anything different. It's tragic.

I am more positive this time but i won't believe it until I see it. I've been disappointed too many times now.

Yep, i hope many will switch to Reform as some of the people i know who are Tory voters wont vote for Sunak.....

But i do not believe the polling, yes its consistent but the number of "don't knows" is huge, often around 40%, thats enough for anything to happen.

If you want the tories gone, vote for it!!!

Cornishclio · 20/06/2024 08:31

I am not sure they will be annihilated. Our political system favours the two party system and with reform and Lib Dem's splitting the vote Labour may not get as much support as people think. The general consensus round here is none of them are electable.

Startingagainandagain · 20/06/2024 08:35

@aloha90210

'i'm genuinely baffled that people are so gleeful at the prospect of a Labour win. Wait and see what they will do to the country. It won't be pretty.'

The Tories have: destroyed the economy, given us the Brexit disaster, messed up the NHS, reduced our standards of living, lied and made up stats throughout, filled our rivers and sea with shit and wasted millions in a crazy Rwanda scheme and through Covid contracts fraud...

So I am fairly certain that what Labour will do will be much 'prettier' than what the current useless and corrupt Tory bunch have done to us.

I don't think you are 'genuinely baffled' and more in a state of complete denial...

Newbutoldfather · 20/06/2024 08:35

The current lot definitely deserve what they get.

But a massive majority is not generally considered a healthy thing, as it puts too much power in the PM and the cabinet.

And we are buying a ‘pig in a poke’ as Labour have said very little.

But let’s be optimistic and hope Labour try to rule for everyone’s benefit and not start a class war.

Kendodd · 20/06/2024 08:36

OrangeCrushes · 20/06/2024 07:33

I have said YABU because it's not a sure thing. Remember the Brexit vote?

Actually polls flip/flopped between a Leave/Remain win. This myth that polls all predicted a Remain win is yet another Leave lie.

I agree with the point though, it's not over until its over.

Beezknees · 20/06/2024 08:37

aloha90210 · 20/06/2024 07:58

Exactly. I'm genuinely baffled that people are so gleeful at the prospect of a Labour win.

Wait and see what they will do to the country. It won't be pretty.

And what have the Conservatives done to the country since they've been in power?

Chipsforteaagain · 20/06/2024 08:37

I don’t think much will change under Labour as there aren’t the finances available for them to do anything. But politics will be conducted with dignity. We won’t have our prime minister lying again and again to hide the truth that massive covid parties were had (of course they were!) or that goods wouldn’t have to be checked before going to the EU (of course they do! Have you not heard of the single market!) or that Liz Truss would be in any way suitable to be a PM (Liz Truss!!! Liz Truss!!!! A walking, talking ERG puppet!).

The Tory party tried to gaslight the entire country. That’s why we loathe them. They took us for idiots. We are not stupid.

Two bordering areas to me, are predicted to remain Tory because of a LD/Labour vote split.

Labour need to step aside in both but the idiots wont, in my area its the LDs that need to step aside, again, they are campaigning hard, so the Tory will win.

Nottodaty · 20/06/2024 08:37

I wouldn’t vote Conservative. But what is concerning me is Labour aren’t engaging - I can’t really understand what they will change?

Tax on private school - this isn’t a set amount we don’t fully know how much. I actually don’t know much more. As a middle earner I’m happy to pay more tax but I need to see where it’s actually going and long term goals. But also with mortgage rates etc it’s not a blank cheque book - that worries me. Working hard and achieving well not all of Labour like that seemingly.

Then I wonder if Kier will be prime minster for a short time then Angela swooped in. It all feels a little to smoke and mirrors.

Not Johnson then? Just Truss? Everyone of the Tory PMs since 2010 has been fucking terrible yet you voted for Johnson?

I hope the Tories never recover and I would blame Johnson entirely for that - his behaviour has destroyed trust in politicians.

I will never understand these people, are they fucking stupid? And I mean this for any devoted party voter, they're not football teams.

HRTQueen · 20/06/2024 08:38

Im in two minds. The less votes the Tories gain the more Reform do and this wil probably influence the Tory party for a few years.

I would rather the Tories gain more votes and win more seats than reform win one seat. I would like to see the LibDems be the main opposition but I think this is unlikely

I am more concerned that Reform shall be the third party in popularity of votes look what happened last time Brexit

it will do no harm to the UK for the Tories to hold a small number of seats for a term but it was only five years ago Labour lost a huge amount of seats and came back it will be the same for the Tories but hopefully not for a few terms

What I find more disconcerting in my view is that Labour are not going to win this election because they are so wonderfully inspiring and are coming up with incredible policies but because the Conservatives have been ineffective.

There certainly does seem to be a sense of 'Labour will get in because they are a bit less shit than the Tories'. Hardly inspiring is it?

Exactly. I'm genuinely baffled that people are so gleeful at the prospect of a Labour win.

It was so much better under Labour than the Tories. I can't think of anything that has got better under the Tories but can name lots that have got worse.
The Economy
The amount we are being taxed
The cost of living
The NHS esp waiting lists
Schools
Mental health provision
No Surestarts

What has improved?!

paasll · 20/06/2024 08:46

Labour are going to win because the conservatives are crap.

In 2019, conservatives won because Labour were crap.

This is a terrible situation. We have to elect the least bad bunch of lying muppets each time.

I think being gleeful about this is very naive OP. Crack on and vote Labour - but wake up and look at how they plan to fund their spending. It’s vague and will hurt normal people. Some of it is fanciful as well. Non doms? Pull the other one. Taxing education which would have been illegal had we not brexited.

Because the conservatives are so shit, Labour
arent getting enough scrutiny.

I agree. This is not 1997. And the majority will be huge which is not good for democracy; if I thought it would
embolden Starmer in the first year or so then fine but I don’t see evidence of that.
I am going to allow myself 24 hours of unbridled joy on 4/5 July if all goes as it seems it will, then go back to fretting about the state of our political institutions.

My expected enjoyment has been rather eclipsed by the momentum the Reform are getting - deeply concerning.

Ditto. Did not like the Tory swing to the right and certainly don't like the rise of the right with Reform either.

You must be quite young if your trust in politicians has only recently been destroyed.

In 1997, I received an election leaflet from labour stating that if they got in, no student would pay tuition fees. Well they got in and introduced tuition fees. I was a teenager when I realised politicians were liars. I have not voted in most elections since.

randomchap · 20/06/2024 08:50

Sunak could be the first serving PM to lose his seat at a general election.

I have champagne on ice.

Now awaiting champagne socialist jibes

CranfordScones · 20/06/2024 08:51

So which party will be an effective Opposition, which is needed whoever is in power?

GCAcademic · 20/06/2024 08:52

Trickabrick · 20/06/2024 07:52

I agree with this, Farage not winning a seat would be the cherry on the cake for me

Part of me hopes he does win. Let's see how effective he is as an MP and at actually having to serve the people stupid enough to vote him in. Hopefully a term in Parliament will expose the charlatan for what he is, once and for all.

I mean, I admire your optimism but Boris got a long way because people forgave him almost endlessly
