If you knew the Greens would win in your seat you'd vote for them

In other words, people don't vote Green mainly because they think they have no chance.

Their manifesto on Education seems to correspond with a lot of views on mumsnet, aibu?

GasPanic · 19/06/2024 11:58

No.

Like Reform, their manifesto is crazy and unworkable.

The greens have done a good job ensuring green issues are on the agenda with the bigger parties such as Labour and the Conservatives. But they are not a party of government.

BashfulClam · 19/06/2024 11:59

Nope because the Scottish greens are women hating crackpots.

GOTBrienne · 19/06/2024 11:59

Nope. They’re idiots as well as there are a lot of floating voters but their batshit beliefs and behaviour in Scotland has stopped them being a decent choice.

SlothOnARope · 19/06/2024 12:00

Serriadh · 19/06/2024 11:56

Exactly the opposite for me, OP. I’d be happy to give the Greens a “protest” vote in an otherwise safe seat so show I’d like environmental issues to be higher on the political agenda. But I wouldn’t if there was the slightest chance they’d end up in power. They are a basket case nationally and I disagree strongly with their stance on nuclear power. Party discipline is poor so there are even more loonies than the mainstream parties. And like the Lib Dems, individual candidates can be great on ‘local issues’ but none of that adds up nationally (or sometimes even aligns with their national policy).

It’s a problem with our electoral system that we aren’t really voting for someone to represent local issues, we’re voting to determine the makeup of the national government.

A protest vote is basically what I am doing. This is absolutely a safe Labour seat, and if Lab gets a rocket up its arse with a massively reduced majority, it might, just might, be held accountable for some of the damage it has done.

I live in hope that is all I can do.

OP posts:
JurassicClark · 19/06/2024 12:00

I would vote for them if it would keep out a Tory MP as their policies are worse overall, but I lost faith in them despite being a member of the Greens for some years.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 19/06/2024 12:01

.....my local candidate, who is really excellent on local issues and that is what matters to me.

General elections aren't about local issues. The elected government needs to have policies on national and international affairs. What are the Green party's policies on the Middle East or aid for Ukraine or the Commonwealth?

whosaidtha · 19/06/2024 12:01

CovertPiggery · 19/06/2024 11:23

I would, but sadly I'm stuck in a safe Tory seat. My only hope is that Reform steal enough votes from them.

There are no safe seats in this election. Rishi has been campaigning in places with a 20kmajority.
As for hoping reform win seats it would be a disaster for the county if that scumbag Nigel Farage was leading the opposition.

maddening · 19/06/2024 12:01

I don't agree with most of their policies so no I would not vote for them.

I don't see that as being wildly unachievable. On a windy day wind's share of the total energy generation mix can easily reach the high 60s percent as it is.

In the last year wind power has accounted doen32.3% of the total power used for the UK - you can see live figures here:
https://grid.iamkate.com/

To reach 70% you're talking about having to increase wind farms by over twice the number we have now. It's currently increasing at a rate of single figures per year. They need to acquire the land, the planning permission and so on on an exponential scale. In Cornwall there are HUGE objections to them going up in beautiful areas or our at sea and I gather this is replicated nationally.

I live in a pretty safe Labour seat with a sitting MP I respect.

If I lived elsewhere I'd certainly consider it.

SlothOnARope · 19/06/2024 12:03

PeonySeasons · 19/06/2024 11:55

Have you actually read the manifesto in full? Do you agree with it all? If so, vote for them. If not, review the other manifestos for all candidates standing in your area and get a broader perspective of what's being proposed by all of them.

As mentioned I don't agree with any party in full, absolutely not.

It's just a shame that a good local Green candidate is going to miss out because the rest of her party is challenged in the sanity department.

OP posts:

Not a chance

But she joined that party. She knows who they are and what they stand for and she still chooses to represent them without standing up/speaking out against the policies she doesn't approve of.

To me that makes her as morally bankrupt as the nutters she's working with.

PBandJ111 · 19/06/2024 12:07

I wouldn’t vote for a bunch of loonies - they make the old looney party look good!

Never in a million years. Climate change is a hoax and liberalism degrades society.

I sincerely would like to think that you are right about climate change, but the evidence strongly shows you are wrong.

Humans have caused localised climate change before that has led to the collapse of societies, now we're doing it on a global scale.

I love the idea of the Green Party but they are totally batshit.

Women's rights aside (and that's bad enough) they think they know better than Cass about kids with gender issues and as for the drugs policy !

they want pharmacy-style places to dispense recreational cocaine and speed which will be sourced by the government and produced by sustainable coca farmers. Or something.

Yes, that’s kinda how I see it. I was impressed with how well the Green candidate spoke at the debates, but their policies let them down.

violetposie · 19/06/2024 12:09

I work for a large local authority and often voted green before in local council elections. Never again. They are the most obstructive group of councillors I've ever worked with.

They force through road closures in neighbourhood areas to "keep pollution down" with no regard to the increased pollution/traffic elsewhere (they choose not to measure levels in areas that will provide evidence in counter to their suggestions). The policies are deeply unpopular yet are forced on the residents.

They are also all over the low emission zones in cities and if they had it their way, everyone driving a personal vehicle would be paying to enter it. Totally incompatible with modern living and the cost of living crisis.

Awful awful awful, I cannot state it enough 😂

Badbadbunny · 19/06/2024 12:09

If I thought the Greens could win our local election, I'd vote for whichever party was most likely to beat them, even if it were the Tories! Hell would have to freeze over before I'd vote Green or vote for a different party to split the opposition vote and let Green win by default.

SlothOnARope · 19/06/2024 12:17

Actually she speaks out very strongly on everything that's important to her and left another party due to its stance on a certain issue so no, not morally bankrupt.

I don't agree with most of their policies so no I would not vote for them.

In the UK they really do present as a fringe party with some very ill thought out ideas and very misogynistic views on women.

Screamingabdabz · 19/06/2024 12:19

So depressing that women’s rights are so easily waved away by many. No I will not vote for any party that hates women.

bilgewater · 19/06/2024 12:21

Same. They won't get my vote under any circumstances.

Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine · 19/06/2024 12:22

Fuck no. It might mobilise me to get off my arse and canvass for another party if that were a possibility.

No. Because they believe a man can self-identify as a woman and on that basis have access to all spaces designed to keep women safe from men, no questions asked. Absolutely no!

MsFogi · 19/06/2024 12:23

Hell would freeze over before I voted for the women-hating Green Party.
