To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 21:31

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

This was in response to a PP asking why people didnt have such a bee in their bonnet about kosher food. The fact is its rarely see whereas every Muslim pizza shop (which is almost all) will be halal.

Please provide reliable links for those stats.

Info from the Food standards agency
The 85% people on here posters keep quoting is a % of all animals slaughtered ie religious and non religious.
The 65% no stun figure does not include non religious slaughtered meat.

"
Agreed, there are LOTS of people born in England who are muslim, but that doesn't make them English does it? Doesn't mean we English, as a nation, has to cater for other cultures to the decrement of our own values and customs.

The % of white English muslim's is tiny, so i doubt that the majority of them are in attendance of this summer fair!"

What do you think English is? What nationality to you think the second / third generation Pakistanis / Bengali's / Nigerians / polish / Jamaican's are? Those born and brought up here, with Brummie / Manc / cockney accents?

elgreco · 19/06/2024 18:54

If the op had asked about kosher, non kosher and vegie she would have got a similar answer.

I don't think you can argue that Muslims must be respected when it comes to food choice but everyone else can be sneered at if they have issues about how the food is prepared.

pumbaasmiles · 19/06/2024 18:54

OP halal meat and veggie will be fine. We usually also do hot dogs (pork so obviously not halal)). That helps placate the odd one who finds Halal offensive because it's Muslim food---- Hmm

Scirocco · 19/06/2024 18:33

People can ask about stunning too. Asking about and making purchasing choices based on issues like this is one way people can contribute to improving animal welfare. If there's a market for stunned vs non-stunned, then the proportion of stunned available will increase.

Agree
However will shops even know where the meat comes from.
A lot of non acceptable kosher meat ( ie if there is a nick in the knife used the slaughtered animal is no longer considered kosher even after they’ve been slaughtered ) enters the mainstream food supply.

Will shops know that their lasagne contains meat from an animal that was slaughtered without stunning, given that the meat was rejected as kosher

Agreed, the hypocrisy and bias are so blatant. Criticise traditions related to Judaism (wearing wigs, have separate fridges, clothing, long temple hair, etc, etc) is immediately called out as antisemitic.

Hypocrisy? Unless you think most people who have been posting criticism of Halal on this thread are Jewish then it's very much not hypocrisy.

I honestly don't think she would have. She would have had comments about how the meat is slaughtered. But certainly not with the same voracity and alongside all the posts about religion/ questioning who is actually English and who doesn't deserve to have their needs catered for.

100% to this. People love to hate on Jewish traditions, kashrut being one of them. I'm really not sure why people think Jews have an easier time of it online than Muslims or other minorities do 😳

I should also say there are many reasons why a slaughtered animal could be rejected as kosher, not just the single example I noted above

I can assure you we would have had the exact same amount of hatred coming our way.

I think it is fine to serve halal and veggie burgers. If you are being woo then go with veggie. Although I liked the compromise someone suggested of also having pork hot dogs as clearly that wouldn't be halal.

Pinkbits · 19/06/2024 19:31

Woo taboo!! You can't have a BBQ with no meat😂

One of several reasons I prefer to get meat from a local butcher rather than a chain supermarket. He knows where the meat comes from and how it was killed, and he's satisfied by the animal welfare standards. If people do prefer to or need to use a supermarket, they could write to customer services and request the information from there. Consumer pressure can be effective, if people then follow through with acting on the information they receive.

Comedycook · 19/06/2024 19:58

When it comes to kosher and halal meat, call me a cynic but I struggle to believe that so many people are genuinely concerned about animal welfare....more like they're concerned about animal welfare when it relates to jewish and muslim people.

Most people don't actually care about how horribly animals might have suffered during their lives or deaths to create cheap burgers for supermarket suppliers. But suddenly once Islam or Judaism gets mentioned, everyone's one step away from joining PETA.

Why are so many people vociferous about Halal but not Kosher? Makes NO sense.

Can’t say I’ve ever had an email saying all
school dinners will now be Kosher or a Nando’s being only Kosher or the local take away being all Kosher. Can’t say you can buy it in a super market either can you? Like a normal Tesco?

So probably be why you never hear people moan about it because it’s basically not rammed down throats.
