To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 21:31

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

Round and round it goes. Whats wrong with someone not wanting a burger made to a religious practice they have no affiliation with whatsoever.

elgreco · 19/06/2024 20:22

When it comes to kosher and halal meat, call me a cynic but I struggle to believe that so many people are genuinely concerned about animal welfare....more like they're concerned about animal welfare when it relates to jewish and muslim people.

I take it you believe European countries brought in humane slaughter laws in the early part of the last century just because they were islamophic and antisemitic.

Can’t say I’ve ever had an email saying all
school dinners will now be Kosher or a Nando’s being only Kosher or the local take away being all Kosher. Can’t say you can buy it in a super market either can you? Like a normal Tesco?

So probably be why you never hear people moan about it because it’s basically not rammed down throats.

There is much less demand for kosher products because there are far fewer Jewish people in the UK compared to Muslim people.

Nothing to do with anything being rammed down anyone's throats.

Because assuming you have halal meat where they do stun the animals first there is absolutely no difference between the two pieces of meat to you as the consumer in terms of taste etc.

Nothing at all. Just as I wouldn't want to eat a non-halal burger, I wouldn't want to serve a halal burger to someone who wouldn't want to eat halal meat.

Most people don't actually care about how horribly animals might have suffered during their lives or deaths to create cheap burgers for supermarket suppliers. But suddenly once Islam or Judaism gets mentioned, everyone's one step away from joining PETA.

😂

Well said.

Are you a goose, is that why Muslims are ramming food down your throat?

You get emails from your local takeaway? Must be posh.

It was meant to be more a pun. A food thread and ramming down throats. I’ll get my coat 🧥 🤣😅

You cannot understand that it's not just about taste or welfare, and that it's about not creating artificial, demand for a product which you have absolutely no need or desire to consume? As has been stated before, we cannot take away the choice to consume non-halal meat, just as we should also have the option of halal meat.

I can understand the point about making sure there are non halal abattoirs so that it’s not a Muslim exclusive profession.

I cannot understand posters who say they would never, could never eat a halal meat burger.

It’s just meat at the point it’s cooked and in your bun.

Yes, this, this and this again. The Guardian readers dont seem to understand that for some reason. We dont want to create demand for a method that is superflous to our requirements.

You might just have to accept it, if you really cannot understand it.
I won't ever choose to eat halal meat unless there is literally no other food in existence. I have no issue with others eating only halal, or kosher, or according to any other requirements.

I can accept it that it seems very silly.

What about other products marked or certified as halal?

Is it just meat and poultry halal production?

You're not wrong in the sense that these people probably still eat supermarket meat without caring about where it comes from.

But I think this is more to do with the implicit trust towards supermarkets. They publicise on their packaging that eggs are free range, cows are able to graze, and people assume high welfare.

With halal, people assume low welfare (which I imagine is true for 99%, as most meat is unless clearly stated otherwise).

Personally, i don't like to eat any cheap meat. Chicken especially. I'd eat halal if cooked and tempted, but I would not buy as an ingredient.

Really? Ever eaten Nutella or had a Ferrero Rocher? Or a KitKat from the UK?

All Halal certified.

Nutella and FR are rank these days.

Just veggie and normal burgers no halal needed as you the veggie option.

I check pretty carefully.
This is actually part of the issue though, halal become the norm without people really being informed that it's happening.

Exactly - if you can take the humane element away from the animal slaughter - so ban non-stunned killing - and also guarantee that there will be non-Muslim slaughter houses to protect job equality then it’s just meat.

And potentially better quality meat if the rules are followed to raise the animals well and with high hygiene standards.

It just starts to sound Islamophobia to say you avoid anything with the word Halal certified on it.
